True Apocalypse Game

Chapter 256 - 244: From God to Man

Hundreds of zombies fixed their ghastly white eyes on the human who had suddenly appeared at the rooftop door after so many years, falling into a brief silence.

If they still possessed consciousness, they would have been weeping with gratitude. After all, they’d been trapped here for far too long.

But now, just an instant later, the zombies let out crazed howls and pounced on the young man who had just appeared!

Shen Feng scoffed and waved his hand, about to command the Gray Tide to completely engulf the zombies.

Nothing happened!

’I’ve gotten so used to the Gray Tide that I forgot it was offline!’

Cursing inwardly, Shen Feng immediately yanked the iron door to slam it shut, but he was a fraction too late. The foremost zombie had already stuck an arm out, blocking the door.

Shen Feng immediately raised his Shotgun, aimed at the zombie’s arm, and pulled the trigger.

*WHIZZ...* With a soft report, the zombie’s bones and muscle tissue were instantly shredded by the close-range pellets, severing the entire arm.

*CLANG!* The iron door finally swung shut. Shen Feng quickly slid the iron bar into place, locking all the lunging zombies inside.

*BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The zombies banged relentlessly on the iron door. Fortunately, the door was nearly two centimeters thick and securely barred by the iron rod. Even with their mutated, augmented strength, the zombies couldn’t break it down.

The door was also pocked with several bullet craters, evidence of a fierce gunfight in the past.

After all, this was Mexico City. Whoever installed this iron door probably did so not to keep out zombies, but to protect against gang shootouts.

It was only then that Shen Feng noticed a mummified corpse huddled in a corner by the door.

The corpse still clutched a gun in its hand. There was an entry and exit wound at its temple, and deep bite marks scarred its arm.

It seemed that when the plague broke out, this person had lured the zombies onto the rooftop and locked the door. Then, before the infection from his own bites could make him turn, he had shot himself.

Shen Feng couldn’t help but sigh in admiration. The man had been a hero.

When the apocalypse began, countless people must have shone with the light of humanity, trying to turn the tide, only to be crushed by the overwhelming disaster in the end.

Shen Feng picked up the severed zombie arm and examined it closely. He found it was similar to the zombie he had dissected earlier.

The muscle tissue was equally well-developed and still active.

Even severed, it still displayed faint neuromuscular reflexes—the fingers were still twitching, curling and uncurling.

’These zombies have been trapped on this rooftop for at least a year. How have they stayed active?’

’No energy intake, only output... It completely violates the law of conservation of energy...’

Shen Feng observed it more closely, then noticed something different.

The skin on the severed arm had a grid-like pattern. It was similar to the fine wrinkles of human skin, but remarkably uniform, and it had a faint, dark-gold metallic sheen.

It looked like a flexible metal membrane.

He peeled back the skin of the arm to examine the tissue beneath.

The way the nerves and muscles interconnected also seemed different from that of a normal human.

It seemed the degree of mutation varied greatly among zombies. The ones on this rooftop appeared to be more evolved than the female zombie he had dissected earlier.

’Maybe I should open the door and grab a few zombies for a proper study...’

Shen Feng glanced at the iron door, which was still shuddering from the relentless banging, and dismissed the thought.

’Better not.’

’This building is too short. I’ll find a taller one.’

Just then, the sound of footsteps suddenly echoed up from the stairwell below.

A burly zombie wearing a gold chain—clearly a gangster before it turned—roared as it bounded up from below and lunged at Shen Feng!

Shen Feng thrust his Shotgun forward, pressed the muzzle directly against the zombie’s forehead, and pulled the trigger.

*SPLAT...* Black brain matter and skull fragments sprayed out behind it, and the top half of its head vanished.

Through the space where the head had been, he saw another zombie rapidly scrambling up the stairs, coming right for him.

He frowned, moved to the railing, and peered down through the gaps between the flights of stairs. He saw a ceaseless stream of zombies climbing up from below, all heading for him!

It was as if every zombie in the entire building was coming!

Clearly, the noise from the iron door had attracted them!

For the first time in a long while, Shen Feng felt a twinge of tension. He pulled a handful of shells from his pocket, loaded them into the magazine, took aim from his high vantage point at two more zombies rushing up, and pulled the trigger.

*BLAM!* The spray of pellets instantly blew the head off the first zombie and riddled the one behind it, turning its skull into a sieve. Both creatures tumbled back and rolled down the stairs.

But they were immediately replaced by several more zombies crawling up the stairs.

Shen Feng didn’t hold his ground. Instead, he charged right at them. With a grim expression, he kept pulling the trigger, using the Shotgun’s wide spread to his advantage, trying to destroy two or three zombie brains with every blast.

’I have to get out of here. The rooftop above is swarming with zombies, and a new horde is coming from below. If I get pinned down here, it’s a death trap!’

Shen Feng was confident he could take down dozens of zombies bare-handed if he ran out of ammo, but a horde of hundreds, even thousands, would devour him without leaving a trace.
