Chapter 253 - 241: Biohazard Apocalypse Mission
"Jingwei, what’s the deal with this news report?" Shen Feng said in his consciousness.
There was less than a day until he entered the next apocalypse mission world.
His backpack was already filled with various supplies he had prepared over the past few days, ready for use in the Biohazard Apocalypse.
The reason he’d come to Mexico in disguise, besides purchasing two types of viruses, was to search for traces of Cthulhu.
Of course, buying the viruses through Mexican channels was his primary objective.
After all, in the bustling Mexico City, you could buy anything if you were willing to spend the money.
It was far more convenient than trying to get ahold of these viruses within Eagle Country.
Martha had previously warned him to "be careful of the spider," so after seeing the spider tattoo on the man with the handlebar mustache, he had simply gone with the flow and followed him up.
He had thought it was a plot by the Purification Society, but it turned out to be the leader of a trafficking group who wanted to perform some kind of organ transplant on him.
It was actually a bit of a letdown.
But now, the news on the television about some ancient Aztec Empire’s Spider Nest City gave him a renewed sense of hope.
’Perhaps this is the "spider" Martha was talking about?’
Speaking of which, the Aztec Civilization was one of the bloodiest in human history.
They sacrificed tens of thousands of living people to their Divine Spirits every year, with all sorts of sacrificial rituals, including cutting out the hearts of the living.
Pleasing their Divine Spirits through death... in a way, it was somewhat similar to those scumbags from the Purification Society.
"I found it. The ruin was just discovered in the western part of Mexico City. It contains many Aztec sacrificial pyramids and countless human skeletons, which were likely used in sacrifices," Jingwei’s voice reported.
"The Mexican national archaeological team has already gone in, and it’s being guarded by some military and police. But the area itself is within the Sinaloa Group’s sphere of influence, and a lot of gang members have already gone inside looking for treasure. The military and police can’t control them at all. Should we go take a look?"
Shen Feng nodded and said,
"We’ll check it out. But first, let’s clean this place up."
He then turned to look at Igo beside him.
Igo, standing to the side, was trembling all over. He felt like a piece of rotting flesh being stared at by a vulture. In a quavering voice, he said,
"Holy Spirit Death God... Sir, I... I’m just an attending physician. I don’t know anything... I don’t know who you are... Are you Death?"
Shen Feng gave him a kind and friendly smile.
"Mr. Igo, you’re not just an attending physician. You’re a *chief surgeon*."
As soon as he finished speaking, the surrounding Gray Tide pounced on Igo like a ferocious beast, swiftly devouring him completely, as if he had never existed.
Afterward, Shen Feng found several guns and ample ammunition in a room on the hospital’s third floor. He stuffed as much as he could into his backpack, even grabbing a full box of top-shelf Havana cigars.
Having done all this, he shouldered his bag, walked down from the third floor, passed by rows of hospital beds and the people selling their organs, and left that breeding ground of sin for the street.
He had no doubt that after killing Cole and Igo, another Cole and Igo would soon appear to take their place.
All of Mexico had become a hotbed of crime. News headlines like "Young Russian Woman on Budget Trip to Mexico Found Dead on Street, Organs Missing" were simply commonplace.
There was only one original sin here—too far from Heaven, too close to Eagle Country.
Shen Feng currently had neither the time nor the energy to change these things. After all, just saving the world was tiring enough.
The most he could do was clean up some of the scum that appeared before him, to lessen the amount of trash in the world just a little.
He raised his arm to look at his bracelet.
There were five hours left until the start of the Biohazard Apocalypse mission.
By now, his preparations for the Biohazard Apocalypse mission were sufficient. His backpack was stuffed with supplies; even without the help of the Gray Tide, he was confident he could handle things with ease.
In fact, he was now rather looking forward to the Biohazard Apocalypse mission.
’I wonder if the Master of the Void has already taken control of that entire mission world?’
’After the Evil Spirit Virus has been present for so long, will the infected have undergone other massive changes?’
’Also, if that world has already become a Biohazard World, it means the Master of the Void succeeded, and the Whisperer failed.’
’Will those dregs from the Purification Society have changed in any new ways?’
’Or are they all dead?’
Of course, before that, he still had to search for clues related to Cthulhu as much as possible.
After arriving in Mexico, Shen Feng had discovered that this place was practically perfect for Cthulhu to hide.
A weak government, various armed criminal groups in actual control of the country, endless chaos and sin, plus a frenzied streak of destruction—it was as if the country was tailor-made for the Purification Society.
Furthermore, its proximity to Eagle Country was convenient for Cthulhu to issue commands to the Purification Society.
Shen Feng had a feeling he was getting closer and closer to the hidden leader of the Purification Society...
With a population of over twenty million, Mexico City was one of the largest cities in the world.
By now, news of the discovery of the Aztec Empire’s Spider Nest City ruins in the west of the city had spread. Many people were heading in that direction, wanting to see the legendary ancient ruins with their own eyes, causing severe traffic congestion.
By the time Shen Feng arrived near the ruins, two hours had passed. He had one hour left before the deadline to enter the Biohazard Apocalypse mission.
A massive sinkhole had appeared in the area, and several buildings and some vehicles had already fallen into it due to the ground giving way.
A pyramid-shaped sacrificial altar was faintly visible, along with some buildings and stark white bones scattered on the ground.
The military and police were actually cooperating with local gang members, setting up a cordon to restrict others from entering. The two groups descended from different directions, preparing to investigate.
Of course, the gang members’ goal was mostly to find treasure, things like the golden mask or the Golden Scepter.
But the closer he got, the more Shen Feng felt a sense of danger.
This sense of danger came entirely from the countless life-and-death crises he had experienced over a long time; you could call it a trained intuition.
Staring at the gaping, dark maw of the sinkhole from a distance, he couldn’t figure out where the sense of danger was coming from.
More and more people were gathering. The ground around the sinkhole was already unstable, and the edge began to collapse again, pulling down some of the military, police, and gang members who were at the front maintaining order.
Luckily, it was only a few meters deep. After landing, the people cursed a few times and scrambled back to their feet.
Just then, a gang member suddenly cried out in surprise and pulled something gleaming and golden from the soil, dazzlingly bright in the sunlight.
It was a Golden Spear!
"There’s treasure down there!"
"It’s gold! Real gold!"
"This stuff is priceless!"
"We’re rich! We’re rich!"
Upon seeing the spear, shouts erupted from the crowd, who had long been eager to rush in.
Then, someone—it’s not clear who—jumped into the sinkhole first. The crowd surged into the ruins like a tide, beginning a frantic search, digging for the treasures they imagined must be there.
For them, this was a chance to get rich quick, and they had to seize it!
At first, the military, police, and gang members tried to maintain order, even shooting down two people to stop the looting mob. But they were immediately met with a hail of bullets from the crowd, and seven or eight of them were killed in an instant. They quickly became much more docile.
Besides, they didn’t want to maintain order anyway. They wanted to get rich, too!
In the blink of an eye, the entire ruin was a chaotic, noisy mess. Every now and then, someone would find an artifact, immediately sparking a brawl as people scrambled to snatch it.
People on the outskirts continued to pour in, causing severe stampedes in many places. But no one was willing to stop; instead, they trampled over those who had fallen, rushing toward the potential treasures within the ruins.
Greed drove them to madness and cruelty. The hundreds of thousands of people present seemed as if they were possessed.
Shen Feng leaped onto the second-floor balcony of a nearby building. Watching the frenzied crowd below, he couldn’t help but feel a rush of emotion.
’This kind of thing could only happen in Mexico.’
’The military and police cooperating with gang members, everyone looting ancient ruins... Latin America truly is a world of magical realism. No wonder it could produce a great writer like Marquez, the author of *One Hundred Years of Solitude*.’
He carefully scanned the ruined city buried deep underground, but he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.
’Could it be that "spider" doesn’t refer to the Spider Nest City after all?’
As Shen Feng pondered this, he suddenly felt the ground begin to tremble faintly with a steady rhythm.
This was followed by the sound of moving air, as if some giant creature was breathing.
Along with it came some faint, low moans and whispers, and he couldn’t tell what was happening.
These sounds mixed with the clamor of the hundreds of thousands of people at the scene, making them difficult to discern.
But then, Shen Feng was horrified to discover that the noisy crowd had rapidly fallen silent. Everyone’s movements began to slow, until finally, they all stood motionless.
The scene was as quiet as a silent film.
Shen Feng felt a chill run down his spine.
Just then, hundreds of thousands of people raised their heads in unison. Whether on the surface or down in the sunken ruins, they all turned to look at Shen Feng on his balcony!
Their eyes were devoid of any emotion, like puppets, yet their faces were twisted into ferocious expressions, as if they shared an irreconcilable hatred for Shen Feng!
In the next instant, the crowd began to charge madly toward Shen Feng on the balcony!
’Holy shit...’
’This is it...’
Shen Feng instantly understood what danger Martha had been talking about.
Mass Hypnosis!
He even felt his own mind growing hazy.
He immediately raised his arm and said to his bracelet:
"Enter the Biohazard Apocalypse mission now!"
