Chapter 220: Whispering Ravine (Part 1)
The Gate stood at the edge of the East District, unremarkable next to the buildings around it, nothing about it hinting at the fact that five people about to walk through it had never once led a dungeon clear on their own.
Kai looked at the five of them. "Lead."
Darius blinked. "...That’s it?"
Kai nodded. "You wanted to become stronger."
He stepped aside, hand nowhere near his sword. "Go."
The five exchanged glances, and for the first time since any of them had joined Ocean Peaks, the responsibility sat entirely on their own shoulders.
Kai and Sera fell in behind them, hands well clear of their weapons.
...
The canyon swallowed them the moment they stepped through.
[Dungeon Found]
[Whispering Ravine — C Rank]
[C-Rank Dungeon: Active]
Strong wind cut down through the gorge, loose rock shifting underfoot on the narrow paths, every sound bouncing off the canyon walls until direction became a guessing game.
Kai said only one thing. "The dungeon starts now."
No further explanation. The five moved forward on their own.
...
Six Razor Wolves broke from the rocks ahead, and the fight that followed wasn’t a struggle. It was good, clean work.
Darius exploded forward, lightning crackling around his fist.
He intercepted the alpha wolf a full second before it reached the group, the impact throwing sparks off the canyon wall behind it.
Josie loosed two curved shots around a boulder, wind trailing each arrow in a tight spiral. Both wolves that had been using the rock as cover dropped without ever seeing what hit them.
Callum vanished from where he’d been standing and reappeared behind a wolf circling toward Vera’s blind side. One clean cut, and it was over before Vera even noticed the danger had existed.
Milo planted his feet, shield raised.
Two separate attacks slammed into the barrier at once, and neither so much as staggered him.
Vera called out positions the entire time, voice sharp and steady over the wind, marking weak points before anyone else had finished processing where the wolves even were.
When the last one dropped, the five of them looked at each other and smiled, the kind of smile that only comes from a fight that actually went well.
Kai walked past them without a word. He tapped a loose stone near the ledge with his boot, and it tumbled off into the canyon, clattering the whole way down.
"...Almost."
That was all he said.
Everyone’s eyes went to the exact spot Darius had been standing during the fight.
No lecture followed. It didn’t need one.
...
The deeper they went, the stranger the ravine’s monsters behaved. Instead of attacking directly, flying creatures started harassing them from above, darting close and retreating before anyone could land a hit. Smaller ground monsters appeared just long enough to bait a chase, then vanished into side tunnels.
The team took the bait more than once, and within minutes they’d scattered across three separate ledges without meaning to.
That’s when the real attack came.
This fight was harder. Not because the monsters were any stronger than before.
Because the five of them weren’t together anymore.
Darius took a hit to the ribs he should have blocked easily. Josie’s arrows went wide without Vera calling range from above. Callum found himself pinned against rock with no one covering his exit. It took nearly twice as long to clear, and all five of them were breathing hard by the end of it.
After they regrouped, Kai said only, "They split you."
Silence.
Nobody needed it explained twice.
...
The next pack hit differently.
Vera started calling positions earlier this time, before the monsters had even fully committed to an approach. Milo drifted closer to Darius without being told to, covering the angle that had opened up last time. Josie held her shot a half-second longer, waiting for a clear line instead of forcing one. Callum stopped moving until the rest of the group had already committed, timing his strikes to the openings they created instead of chasing his own.
The difference showed immediately. The monsters never found a single gap to exploit.
Kai watched from the back of the group, arms loose at his sides.
Sera smiled beside him. "They’re fast learners."
Kai nodded once. "They’re paying attention."
...
The bridge stretched across the widest part of the ravine, wooden slats groaning under the wind, and halfway across, a shriek cut through the gorge as a pack of harpies dove out of the cliffside above.
This fight was the hardest one yet, and everyone felt it immediately. The wind made every arrow drift off-target. The bridge itself swayed hard enough that footing became its own battle. Darius couldn’t get a full swing in without overcorrecting his balance. Josie’s shots kept curving wide of their mark.
None of them panicked.
Josie started timing her shots to the lull between wind gusts instead of fighting through them. Darius shortened his swings, trading power for control. Callum dropped beneath the bridge itself, using the underside as cover to strike upward at anything that got too close to the group. Milo planted his shield at the center of the bridge and held the anchor point everyone else worked around. Vera started calling the wind timing out loud, a full second ahead of each gust, giving everyone just enough warning to adjust.
Nobody had told them to do any of it. They’d built it themselves, mid-fight, out of nothing but necessity.
Kai just watched.
...
They crossed the bridge fully a few minutes later, and Kai kept walking without turning around.
"Better."
One word.
The five of them broke into smiles they didn’t bother hiding, and something about that single syllable landed harder than any full paragraph of praise could have.
Sera laughed quietly beside him. "They’re going to remember that forever."
Kai didn’t answer, but the corner of his mouth was doing something that looked suspiciously like a smile of his own.
...
The ravine opened into a massive basin, waterfalls crashing down from the cliffs above, mist hanging thick over the water. Standing at the center, half-submerged in the spray, a Cliff Wyvern slowly opened its eyes.
The five rookies immediately fell into formation.
Kai walked toward a flat rock near the basin’s edge and sat down. Sera joined him a moment later, settling in like she was watching a match instead of standing beside a live dungeon boss.
Darius glanced back, confused. "...You’re really not helping?"
Kai shrugged. "It’s a C-Rank."
Sera smiled. "We believe in you."
The Wyvern roared, wings snapping open wide enough to blot out the waterfall behind it, and the five stepped forward together, weapons raised, already calling positions before the creature had finished its first breath of flame.
For the first time all day, Kai and Sera were nothing but spectators.
...
Vera called first. "Wings first, it can’t dive without them!"
Darius moved on the word, lightning already crackling up his arm as he closed the distance along the water’s edge. The Wyvern twisted to meet him, tail sweeping low, and Milo’s shield caught the blow before it connected, the impact driving a spray of mist and stone chips into the air.
Josie loosed three arrows in quick succession, wind trailing each one in a tight corkscrew, and two of them found the joint at the base of the Wyvern’s left wing. It screeched, wingbeat faltering.
Callum was already moving, using the confusion to slip in close and drive his blade along the exposed underside of its throat. Not a killing blow, but enough to draw a fresh burst of blood into the mist.
The Wyvern reared back, furious now, and slammed its tail across the ground in a wide arc that forced all five of them to scatter. For a moment it looked like the coordination might break apart entirely.
It didn’t.
Vera’s voice cut through the spray of water. "Regroup on Milo, now!"
They funneled back toward his shield without hesitation, the Wyvern’s next strike absorbed cleanly, and Darius came around the flank the second it overextended, lightning arcing down his blade as he drove it through the already-wounded wing joint.
The Wyvern’s wing gave out entirely.
It hit the ground hard, water exploding outward in a wave that soaked everyone standing nearby, and Callum finished it a heartbeat later, blade sliding home exactly where Josie’s arrows had already opened the way.
Silence settled over the basin except for the waterfall.
The five of them stood there, soaked and breathing hard, staring at the fallen Wyvern like they couldn’t quite believe they’d done it without anyone stepping in to save them.
Kai clapped once from the rock, unhurried. "Not bad."
Sera grinned beside him. "Not bad at all."
The look on all five faces said the same thing, quiet and unmistakable, the exact feeling of a team that had just proven something to themselves that no amount of watching could have taught them.
