My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Chapter 219: The Road Ahead

The trees thinned gradually, the oppressive forest giving way to an enormous clearing. Broken stone pillars rose from the earth, ancient ruins half-swallowed by roots. The mana here was heavier than anywhere they’d walked through so far, thick enough that even breathing took visible effort.

The five rookies slowed without meaning to.

Kai stopped walking. "So."

Everyone looked at him.

"The boss."

A deep rumble rolled through the clearing. Birds burst from the distant treeline all at once, and the ground shook beneath their boots. A massive creature emerged from the mist, towering well above the surrounding trees, its body armored in thick bark, roots coiled around its limbs like living chains. Its eyes glowed deep emerald, and every step it took cracked the earth beneath it.

Milo, the nervous one, took an unconscious step back. "...It’s huge."

Kai drew his sword without hurry. Sera rolled her shoulders and set her shield against the ground for a moment, neither of them showing the smallest trace of nerves.

Kai glanced back at the five. "Stay here."

Darius, the confident one, spoke up immediately. "We can help."

"No."

"But—"

Sera smiled. "Today isn’t about defeating monsters." She looked at all five of them in turn. "It’s about learning."

Kai nodded. "Don’t watch the monster."

"Watch us."

None of them understood what that meant yet.

...

The boss moved first, vanishing without warning.

The rookies froze, eyes darting across the clearing, finding nothing.

Then the ground exploded beneath Kai, massive roots tearing upward through the dirt. He was already gone, having moved before the attack even fully began. The roots tore through empty air where he’d been standing a half-second earlier.

At the same instant, Sera’s shield slammed into one of the rising roots, redirecting it just enough that instead of striking Kai, it crashed harmlessly into another.

Kai reappeared beside the creature’s flank. One clean slash. A shallow wound. Not enough.

The boss swung. Sera intercepted, shield against claw, the impact rolling across the clearing like distant thunder. Kai used the opening instantly, one strike, then another, nothing flashy, nothing overwhelming.

Just perfect coordination.

The five rookies didn’t even know where to look.

...

Josie, the enthusiastic one, couldn’t blink.

She’d watched every hunter broadcast she could find growing up. Tournament recordings. Guild promotional reels. None of it looked like this.

Kai and Sera barely spoke to each other. And yet every movement fit together like it had been drawn from the same hand. Kai never had to check where Sera would be standing. Sera never scanned the field looking for him. They simply knew.

It almost looked choreographed.

No, she corrected herself. It looked practiced. Years of trust compressed into single seconds she was watching unfold in real time.

Her heart was pounding. "...Amazing."

For the first time, she understood why people called them elite hunters, and it had nothing to do with how hard either of them could hit.

...

The boss roared, and mana erupted from its body in a visible wave. The clearing shook violently. Ancient stone pillars cracked and toppled. Fresh roots tore up through the ground, reshaping the battlefield entirely.

Kai retreated immediately, not away from danger but toward higher ground. Sera moved the opposite way at the same moment.

The boss hesitated.

Which one?

That single hesitation was all Kai needed. He attacked, the boss turned to meet him, and its flank opened wide.

Sera was already there. Shield first, sword second.

The rookies started noticing something in the pattern now. Every attack forced the next opening. Nothing random. Nothing improvised.

Everything connected.

...

Darius’s sword had drifted lower without him noticing.

He couldn’t make sense of it.

This wasn’t stronger. It was different.

He’d always assumed elite hunters simply hit harder, moved faster, threw around bigger skills. Instead, Kai and Sera barely wasted a single motion. Every step mattered. Every strike had a reason behind it.

The monster wasn’t losing because they overpowered it.

It was losing because they controlled every second of the fight before it even happened.

"...No way," he muttered.

Everything he’d believed about combat up to this point suddenly felt incomplete, like a book he’d only read half of.

...

The boss shifted tactics, abandoning Kai entirely and charging straight for the five rookies instead, some deep animal instinct recognizing easier prey.

The five tensed at once.

Kai didn’t shout a warning. Sera didn’t panic. She simply moved, one powerful leap carrying her shield into the creature’s shoulder mid-charge. The impact shifted its entire trajectory sideways, sending it sliding across the broken ground instead of reaching them.

Kai arrived a half-second later. One strike. A tendon snapped audibly, and the monster stumbled hard.

"Lesson one," Kai said, still mid-fight, voice level. "Monsters choose weakness."

Sera added, already resetting her stance, "If you don’t protect it, they’ll exploit it."

The five listened without daring to look away from the fight.

...

Vera, the analytical one, had stopped trying to track individual attacks. They moved too fast for that.

Instead she started watching decisions.

Why Kai stood exactly there. Why Sera blocked that specific angle and not the one beside it. Why neither of them ever chased the monster when it retreated.

Then it clicked into place.

They weren’t reacting to the fight.

They were creating the choices the monster was forced to make, narrowing its options one exchange at a time, until eventually it had nothing left but bad decisions.

Her notebook, which she hadn’t realized she’d been holding this whole time, lowered slowly to her side.

"...I never even considered fighting like that."

...

Callum, the quiet one, found himself smiling without meaning to.

Not because the fight looked easy. Because it looked beautiful.

The rhythm between them. The trust that let neither of them look twice before committing to a move. It reminded him, sharply and unexpectedly, of exactly why he’d wanted to become a hunter in the first place.

Not the money. Not the recognition.

Moments like this one.

He laughed quietly to himself. "So."

"This is what I want."

...

The boss let out one final roar, and the entire clearing flooded with mana. Cracks spread across the bark covering its body, emerald light pouring out of every fracture. Its strength surged visibly, the ground trembling now without pause.

Kai and Sera both recognized the shift instantly.

Final phase.

Kai glanced at her. No words passed between them. She nodded once.

Enough.

Sera charged first, and the boss followed her exactly as intended. Kai circled wide behind it while the rookies watched, still not fully realizing they were witnessing a trap closing.

Only the boss understood, and by then it was already too late.

...

Milo hadn’t expected any of this.

When the fight started, all he’d wanted was to survive it.

Now he wanted to train. He wanted to improve. He wanted to stand where Kai was standing someday, not tomorrow, not next year, but someday, however far off that turned out to be.

For the first time since becoming a hunter, the future in front of him felt more exciting than any reward waiting at the end of a dungeon.

He laughed, a real one this time.

"I can get there."

Maybe not today.

But someday.

...

Sera planted her shield into the earth, and the boss committed fully, exactly as she’d wanted. Its massive claw crashed down onto the shield, and for one full heartbeat, everything in the clearing seemed to stop.

Kai moved.

One perfect step. One perfect strike. The Fractured Blade split clean through the glowing fracture running down the creature’s chest.

Silence.

The boss froze mid-motion, the emerald light fading out of every crack across its body, and its massive frame slowly collapsed into the broken earth.

The clearing went quiet. Leaves drifted down through the settling dust.

Neither Kai nor Sera reacted. They simply sheathed their weapons and turned around.

Behind them, all five rookies were still staring at the space where the boss had fallen.

Nobody spoke.

Then, almost at the exact same moment, all five of them whispered it under their breath.

"...I want to be like that."

Kai heard it. Sera heard it too. Neither turned around, but small smiles crossed both their faces at once.

The lesson had worked.

...

They stepped out of the Gate into warm sunlight, fresh air replacing the heavy mana instantly. Everything felt lighter, the five rookies walking in complete silence, not out of discouragement, but because every one of them had something new to think about.

Kai stretched casually. "So."

Five heads turned toward him at once.

"We’re done watching."

Confusion spread across their faces.

Kai smiled. "Watching only gets you so far." He pointed toward the city skyline in the distance. "Let’s hit a C-Rank dungeon."

Josie blinked. "...Right now?"

Kai nodded. "We’re not jumping straight into B-Rank training. We build a foundation first." He looked at each of them in turn. "Step by step. The same way every elite hunter did."

Sera smiled. "You saw the destination."

Kai started walking toward the city without waiting for a response, and all five of them hurried after him a moment later.

This time, not because Guild Master Finn had ordered it.

Because they genuinely wanted to become stronger.
