Chapter 215: The King of the Dead
The fused undead charged.
Not wildly. Perfectly organized.
Towering skeleton giants formed the front line. Bone archers slotted into formation behind them. Necromancers dragged walls of skeletal hands up from beneath the ground, and undead wolves peeled off into the ruined side streets, flanking wide.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "...They’re coordinating."
Sera drove her shield into a giant’s knee, and gold light detonated on impact.
[Class Emulation: Blood Tyrant – Partial: Stack 1.]
"Someone’s giving orders."
Kai nodded, already moving. "They’re delaying us."
"They don’t care if they die."
"They’re buying time."
Another wave broke from a collapsed bakery. Kai looked past all of it, toward the distant castle.
"We’re not clearing every monster."
Sera grinned, spear already in hand. "When have we ever?"
Kai leveled the Fractured Blade forward. "We cut a path."
Rootbreaker replaced it a heartbeat later, and he drove it into the ground.
BOOM!
The shockwave tore through the front line, giants staggering sideways into each other. Sera launched off the same blast, spear trailing gold. Magic Burst detonated mid-air, and three of the giants collapsed through a row of houses that had been standing since before either of them were born.
Kai didn’t look back. "Keep moving."
They tore a corridor through the horde. Kai shattered formations with Rootbreaker’s shockwaves. Sera vaulted collapsing barricades, detonating anything that regrouped before it finished regrouping. Every gap Kai opened, Sera widened. Everything that slipped past her, Kai finished, blade flashing without him needing to look.
Neither of them spoke a plan. There wasn’t one to speak.
...
The battlefield gave way to a city, and the change hit harder than either of them expected.
A bakery. A schoolhouse. A marketplace, stalls still standing.
Everything frozen mid-life. Skeletons still sat around dinner tables, forks resting where hands had dropped them. Merchants stood behind stalls that hadn’t sold anything in longer than either of them could guess.
Kai slowed. "...This wasn’t just a kingdom."
"It was a home," Sera finished quietly.
Then she saw it again. The branching symbol, carved into doorframes, into bridge railings, into the base of a dry fountain.
"This symbol..."
Kai looked at the nearest doorway. "...It’s everywhere."
The green flames drifting through the streets began moving with purpose, streaming uphill toward the castle like rivers running backward.
Kai stopped walking. "...The dungeon’s feeding something."
A bell tolled once from the castle, deep enough to rattle glass. Every undead in sight turned toward the sound.
Then toward Kai.
The march resumed.
...
The castle gates opened on their own.
No monsters waited inside. Only silence, and rows of kneeling skeletons stretching the length of an enormous throne hall, hundreds of them, maybe thousands, none moving.
At the far end sat a figure on a throne of black stone. Ancient robes. A cracked golden crown. One skeletal hand resting on a staff crowned with an emerald crystal.
It lifted its head. Green flame ignited in the empty sockets.
[Boss Detected]
[Lich King]
[Level 67]
The room’s temperature dropped.
"So," the Lich said, its voice layered like dozens speaking at once, "the living still remain."
Kai smiled. "There you are."
Sera tightened her grip on her spear. "It talks."
"...Good." Kai rolled his shoulders. "I’ve got questions."
The Lich rose slowly from the throne. "So did I. Once."
...
It didn’t attack. It tapped its staff against the floor, once, and every kneeling skeleton rose at the same moment, the sound of a thousand bones snapping upright filling the hall like breaking ice.
Kai exhaled. "...That’s a lot."
Sera smiled. "I’ve seen worse."
"You haven’t."
"I know."
The Lich never left its throne. It gestured, and shield walls rose from the floor. Gestured again, and bone archers fired in perfect synchronized volleys. A third gesture reshaped shattered soldiers into fresh ones mid-fight.
Kai tore through the formations anyway. Sera hunted down the command points, cutting the strings before they could tighten. Every few seconds the Lich adjusted, redirecting, watching, learning faster than anything they’d fought before.
Kai caught it. "...It’s studying us."
Sera grinned. "So let’s give it something worth studying."
They swapped roles without a word, Kai turning reckless and aggressive, Sera dropping into a defensive shell, then swapping again a breath later. The Lich hesitated, just once, a flicker of recalculation.
Kai caught that too. "...Got you."
...
The throne cracked. The Lich stepped down, and mana detonated outward, every torch in the hall igniting green, the floor freezing solid beneath Kai’s boots.
It raised one finger. Hundreds of floating bone spears assembled overhead.
"...Move!"
The hall dissolved into chaos, spears raining down like artillery, necrotic explosions tearing pillars apart. Kai charged straight through it. Rootbreaker met the Lich’s staff head-on.
CLANG!
The impact shook the castle’s foundation. Sera appeared behind it a half second later, Magic Burst crashing into a skeletal shield the Lich conjured on instinct.
BOOM!
Dust swallowed the throne dais. The Lich hadn’t moved an inch.
Chains erupted from the floor around Kai’s ankles. He cut through them, and the severed links twisted into skeletal snakes mid-fall. Sera destroyed all three before they reached him.
Kai nodded. "Thanks."
"You owe me."
The Lich escalated, teleporting between strikes, reshaping the battlefield with every spell. Bone walls. Necrotic storms. Ghost soldiers rising out of green mist. Every attack forced a new answer.
...
Somewhere above the fight, one of the Hunter Association’s scout drones had drifted close enough to catch the whole exchange, feed already looping back to the surface. Later, the clip of Rootbreaker meeting the Lich’s staff head-on would be the single most replayed ten seconds on every stream in Mythal by evening. Neither of them knew it yet. Neither of them had time to care.
Kai noticed the pattern first. "The Lich always predicts one fighter. Never two."
He smiled. "Sera."
"I know."
No explanation needed. Kai overextended on purpose, and the Lich attacked exactly where it expected an opening. Sera was already there, Magic Burst slamming into its guard while Kai vanished into the dust behind it, Rootbreaker already swinging.
The Lich launched backward, bone wings flickering into existence mid-air to catch itself. Sera threw her spear in the same instant. Kai struck it mid-flight with the flat of his blade, and the spear accelerated, punching clean through the Lich’s barrier.
A crack. The first one.
"...Interesting," the Lich said.
Kai grinned. "We get that a lot."
The fight flowed without a single wasted movement now, no shouted instructions, only trust doing the talking. The Lich began losing ground for the first time since it had risen from its throne.
...
It stopped retreating. It planted its staff into the floor instead, and every undead across the ruined kingdom roared at once, green mana pouring toward the throne room like the whole city was exhaling in one direction.
Kai understood immediately. "...It’s calling everything."
Outside, the fused army was already turning back. The dead city was waking up behind them.
Sera glanced at the doors. "We don’t have time."
"We finish it."
The Lich began casting, and a necrotic sun bloomed above the throne, swallowing half the ceiling in sickly green light.
"Sera."
She smiled. "Already moving."
Kai charged straight into the spell, Rootbreaker glowing brighter than it ever had, and the shockwave split the necrotic sun clean in half. Sera launched off the blast itself, Magic Burst detonating against the Lich’s last barrier. Cracks spread across it like shattering glass.
Kai closed the distance a half second later.
One final swing.
Rootbreaker collided with the emerald crystal.
CRACK!
The crystal shattered. The staff snapped. The crown split down the center, and green soul-fire poured from every fracture in the Lich’s body.
It looked at Kai one last time. "...The King... still... waits."
Its body collapsed into drifting ash.
Silence.
...
System windows flooded the throne room.

Experience poured in. Rare materials. Soul Crystals. Necrotic Essence. Ancient Bones stacked in a pile nearly as tall as Kai.
Then equipment began to appear on the ground. They walked over to pick up their own share. For Kai it was a suit of dark silver armor assembled piece by piece, and black cloak settled across his shoulders, moving gently despite the still air.
He flexed once. "...Lighter."
"...Much lighter."
Sera circled him once. "...You actually look like a commander now."
"I thought I already did."
"You looked like someone pretending."
"This one believes it."
For Sera, she just picked the black long sword and black-silver shield that had runes over it. She lifted it, surprised by how light it was, then swung the sword once. Perfect balance.
"...I hate that I like it."
Kai laughed. "Knew it."
The floor cracked beneath them. The symbol carved into the base of the throne pulsed faintly, then began to crumble.
Kai knelt, almost close enough to touch it—
The floor gave out entirely.
Sera grabbed his arm. "We’re leaving."
They sprinted through collapsing corridors, ceilings caving in behind them, bridges snapping, towers folding into rubble on either side. They cleared widening chasms in single leaps, tore through walls of dust, and burst through the castle gates just as the last standing tower came down behind them.
They dove through the exit a heartbeat before the Gate imploded into scattered light.
Outside, the waiting Hunters went completely silent.
Kai and Sera stepped out of the wreckage covered in ash, breathing hard, wearing equipment that looked like it had been waiting a thousand years for someone to earn it.
