My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Chapter 214: The Fallen Kingdom

Kai’s phone buzzed while he was still finishing breakfast.

Mira: One of the Titan Forge scouts just ran out of a new Gate in the eastern district. Says a wave of green aura came out of nowhere and scared him half to death. I was going to clear it myself but I’ve got the guild cooperation meeting all morning.

Kai read it twice, then showed Sera the screen.

Sera raised an eyebrow. "Green aura?"

"That’s all she said."

"You want to go look at it."

"I want to go look at it."

Sera was already reaching for her spear. "We haven’t done a B-Rank in a few days anyway."

"Since when do we need a reason?"

"Since never," she said, standing up. "I’m just saying it out loud so it sounds responsible."

...

The gate stood in the eastern district, and Kai noticed the difference before they’d even reached it. Hunters stood unusually far back. Nobody lingered near the entrance. Nobody chatted. Even the veterans watched in silence, arms folded, keeping their distance like the gate itself might notice them.

The gate looked wrong. Not blue, not green, not crimson.

Just black. Like someone had cut a hole in reality and left the edges ragged.

Gray mist spilled slowly across the street, and Kai noticed several hunters unconsciously step back whenever it drifted too close to their boots.

An older hunter noticed him watching. "You’ve never seen one?"

Kai shook his head.

The hunter sighed. "They’re cursed."

Sera raised an eyebrow. "Dungeons can’t curse people."

He nodded. "I know."

"...Doesn’t stop people from saying it."

Kai smiled. "We’ll test the rumor."

The old hunter only said, "...Good luck," and there was no confidence anywhere in his voice.

As they stepped closer, the System flickered to life in front of them.

[Dungeon Found]

[The Fallen Kingdom — B Rank]

No boss listed. No difficulty rating. Just the name.

Sera glanced at it. "That’s new. Usually it gives more."

Kai shrugged. "Maybe it doesn’t know yet either."

...

The moment they crossed the gate, silence swallowed them.

Not ordinary silence. Oppressive silence, the kind that pressed against the ears. The air was cold enough that every breath came out visible, curling and vanishing above them.

Nothing else followed. No boss name, no status, no warning.

Overhead, a gray sky stretched without sun, without cloud, only drifting ash falling in slow, lazy spirals. The landscape ran endlessly in every direction: broken stone roads, collapsed towers leaning against nothing, abandoned villages swallowed by dead forest, half-buried statues staring out from beneath drifts of dust.

In the far distance stood the remains of an enormous castle, its tallest tower still standing, barely, like it had forgotten how to fall.

Kai turned slowly, taking it all in. "...This is huge."

Sera knelt beside a cracked road, running a hand over the stone. "No footprints."

"No animals."

"No insects."

Kai frowned. "...Nothing."

Even the wind didn’t blow.

"...Where is everybody?"

The answer came immediately. A skeletal hand erupted from beneath his boot, fingers closing on empty air where his foot had been a half second earlier.

Kai jumped sideways. "...Found one."

...

Rather than a monster attacking, the ground did.

The road cracked open, and bone spikes exploded upward, not in straight lines, not randomly. Almost intelligently, adjusting mid-eruption like something was watching their footwork.

Kai barely twisted away from one, a spike erupting exactly where his shoulder had been.

Blue windows appeared as the first spike shattered against empty pavement.

He felt it a beat later, something settling into his grip, his sword lighter than it should’ve been, angling itself a fraction ahead of where he meant to swing. He didn’t question it. He never really did anymore.

Sera vaulted onto a broken wall, scanning the street below. "...Those are tracking us."

Kai watched the next eruption carefully, then the one after that, until the pattern clicked into place. "They’re targeting concentrated mana."

Sera grinned. "So..."

"We’re giant targets."

Kai sighed. "Fantastic."

What followed turned into an obstacle course through the ruined streets, jumping, sliding, ducking behind collapsed buildings as cover.

At one point Kai grabbed a discarded mana crystal from the rubble and deliberately overloaded it, tossing it a good distance away. The spikes erupted around it instead, a whole section of road shattering harmlessly.

Sera laughed, watching the display. "Clever."

Kai shrugged, already moving again. "If it wants mana..."

"Let’s feed it."

...

The bone pillars stopped all at once, and the sudden quiet made Kai uneasy.

"...Too quiet."

Sera looked up. Dark green clouds had gathered overhead, thick and low, rolling in from nowhere. "...Move."

A single glowing raindrop landed on a wandering skeleton nearby, and it ignited instantly with emerald fire. Not ordinary fire. Ghostly, cold-looking flame that ate through bone without a sound. The skeleton didn’t even manage to collapse before it burned away to nothing.

Kai watched, fascinated despite himself. "...Interesting."

Another drop nearly landed on him. Sera grabbed his collar and yanked him under a collapsed archway.

"Observe later."

"Run now."

The rain intensified, and entire buildings caught fire around them, dead trees becoming pillars of green flame, rotting corpses along the road dissolving where the drops touched them. Stone hissed under the acidic rain like it was being eaten alive.

Kai and Sera sprinted between ruins, diving under collapsed roofs, timing their movements between showers. At one point the roof sheltering them began to soften and drip, the stone itself starting to melt.

Kai glanced up. "...We should leave."

"I was thinking the same thing."

They made it out from under the crumbling roof with seconds to spare, the whole thing collapsing into green fire behind them.

...

When the rain finally ended, the world went eerily quiet again.

Then footsteps.

A Skeleton Knight stepped out from behind a fallen tower, rusted armor hanging loose on its frame, an ancient shield still strapped to one arm, blue soul-fire burning steady inside its empty sockets.

It didn’t roar. It simply raised its sword.

Blue windows flickered again at the edge of Kai’s vision.

Kai smiled. "There you are."

The moment he moved, he felt it again, the same subtle pull guiding his sword, angling it a fraction before he’d even finished deciding where to strike. His first swing caught the knight across the neck exactly where the old rust had thinned the armor. The second removed its remaining arm before it could bring the shield up.

The knight staggered.

Kai barely had to think.

Sera knocked its shield away, and the last strike came from Kai a half second later, clean through the skull. It collapsed all at once, rusted armor and bone scattering across the street.

Kai looked down at his own hand for a moment, flexing his fingers.

"...That was faster than it should’ve been."

Sera glanced at him. "You noticed?"

"Every time I need it, my sword’s already there before my brain catches up." He shook his head slightly, like clearing water out of his ears. "It’s never been that obvious before."

Sera didn’t answer right away, filing it away the way she filed most things Kai said out loud without meaning to.

More undead appeared soon after, bone archers firing down from broken rooftops, zombie wolves darting through the alleyways between collapsed houses, decaying soldiers hauling themselves over broken walls one at a time.

Kai and Sera cut through them efficiently, but neither of them relaxed.

Something felt off, and neither of them could name it yet.

...

Eventually the ruined streets opened into a massive battlefield, wide enough that the far tree line blurred in the ash-gray light. Thousands of broken weapons littered the ground. Collapsed siege towers lay half-buried in the dirt. Ancient banners, reduced to little more than rags, still clung stubbornly to their poles.

Kai stopped walking. "...This place."

Sera nodded slowly, taking it in. "It remembers war."

Silence.

Then the ground trembled. Graves cracked open across the field, one skeleton climbing free, then five, then ten, then twenty, then thirty, then fifty, more still climbing out from beneath the dirt.

Archers. Knights. Mages. Undead beasts loping between them on all fours.

The whole battlefield woke up at once.

Kai grinned. "There they are."

Sera spun her spear once, settling into her stance. "I was wondering when this dungeon would stop pretending."

The battle erupted. Magic Burst tore clean through a line of archers. Rootbreaker sent skeletons flying in shattered arcs. The Verdant Fang cut through entire ranks with a single sweeping thrust, wind and steel together.

Kai launched broken bones into clusters of other undead, using the shockwave to clear ground he didn’t have time to reach himself. Sera collapsed a section of ruined wall onto a wave of advancing soldiers, burying half of them under rubble.

Despite the overwhelming numbers, neither of them felt pressured. If anything, it turned into an experiment.

Kai deliberately launched a skeleton into a cluster of bone pillars, watching the chain reaction with open curiosity. Sera laughed as a string of exploding skeletons wiped out a pack of zombies that had been closing in from her blind side.

Within minutes, the battlefield fell silent again, broken bone covering the ground like fallen snow.

Kai exhaled. "...Good exercise."

Sera wiped dust off her sleeve. "I expected worse."

...

Silence settled over the field, and Kai started walking toward the castle in the distance. "...Boss?"

Then the dungeon shook.

Not once.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Dark mana flooded across the battlefield in a slow, spreading tide, and every shattered skeleton on the ground began to vibrate.

Bones slid across the dirt on their own, arms dragging themselves toward nearby torsos, skulls rolling in slow circles until they found something to sit on.

Zombie flesh, torn apart minutes earlier, pulled itself back together like wet clay reshaping under invisible hands.

Kai stopped. "...Ah."

The pieces didn’t simply reconnect. They merged. Three skeletons folded into one, taller, thicker, wrong in the way its limbs bent. Zombie wolves fused together into towering shapes with too many legs. Broken knights combined into massive armored giants, shields overlapping into a single wall of rusted metal.

Necrotic flame ignited across the battlefield in scattered patches, and dozens of monsters rose again, larger, heavier, far more dangerous than anything they’d cut down minutes earlier.

A roar shook the ruins.

Kai blinked. "...Right."

"...Undead."

Sera twirled her spear once before settling back into her stance. "They were never going to stay dead that easily."

Kai sighed, watching the fused giants rise to their full height. "...Guess we have to figure out what keeps bringing them back."

Before the fused army could close in, Sera’s eyes caught something at the edge of the battlefield, half buried near one of the collapsed siege towers.

A stone marker, cracked but upright, the same kind of branching symbol they’d found back in the Skyvine Forest carved faintly into its surface.

She grabbed Kai’s sleeve. "That symbol again."

Kai glanced at it, filing it away even as the ground rumbled beneath them. "Same one from the summit."

"That can’t be a coincidence."

"No," Kai said. "But it’s going to have to wait."

The fused undead army charged.

Far in the distance, high atop the ruined castle, a single green light flickered inside the tallest tower.

Neither Kai nor Sera noticed it.
