Chapter 227 - 217: The Volcano is About to Erupt
Jiang Si went into the cave and brought out their suitcases.
The axes and knives inside the suitcases were a huge help to Jiang Si’s boat-building efforts.
Jiang Si had them all work on the boat together. After an entire day, they had only managed to fashion the base plank.
In the process, they also had to kill several snakes that tried to ambush them.
Worried about the dangers, they no longer dared to venture far in search of food. They stuck to the safe area nearby, gathering whatever edibles they could find and always moving as a group. Only when their supplies ran out would they go looking for more, and they would do it together.
RUMBLE—
The island’s volcano suddenly began to let out a series of deep rumbles.
Jiang Si was terrified, worried the volcano was about to erupt.
If it did erupt, they wouldn’t have time to escape, even if the boat was finished.
Fortunately, the volcano only seemed to be threatening them; it didn’t actually erupt.
But this only strengthened Jiang Si’s resolve. She had to leave this place as soon as possible.
Her premonition told her the volcano truly would erupt very soon.
The volcanic activity startled many Vultures. Their fledglings, still learning to fly, were scared into taking off prematurely, and they immediately fell into the water.
Killer whales suddenly appeared and treated them like toys, snatching them up and tossing them about before finally tearing them to shreds. Blood stained the entire surface of the sea.
The sight horrified Jiang Si. ’If we go in the water, we’ll likely end up as the killer whales’ toys again.’
’If we aren’t so lucky this time, we’ll be the ones torn to shreds.’
But she only had ten bullets left in her gun.
Killer whales were behemoths; a bullet wouldn’t kill one, but it would certainly enrage it.
Jiang Si suddenly felt that the path to reuniting with Qin Shen and the others was long and arduous.
Aisar, seemingly unaware of what a ferocious type of mutated beast a Vulture was, excitedly pointed at a young, newly-matured one on the beach.
This huge, wing-injured creature was a far cry from the tame pets she had raised from birth.
If they got any closer, it would deliver a fatal blow.
Jiang Si’s brow furrowed. She saw that the killer whales had spotted the young Vulture and were just waiting for the waves to wash it into the water so they could have a new toy.
Staring at the young Vulture as it cried mournfully, Jiang Si was suddenly reminded of her past life. People back then had tamed adult mutated beasts to use as mounts.
’Taming a mature Vulture is dangerous, but if I succeed, we can fly out of here immediately. We could even find Qin Shen and the others quickly.’
A surge of courage filled Jiang Si. She glanced around, gathered a large amount of kudzu vines, and hastily wove them into a crude, thick rope. Then, she began to approach the young Vulture step by step.
The young Vulture was extremely wary. It opened its long, sharp beak, its face a mask of ferocity.
’I don’t care how ferocious it is,’ Jiang Si thought. ’The most important thing right now is to save its life.’
Jiang Si raised the rope, fashioned it into a loop, and began spinning it rapidly. Like roping cattle, she lassoed it around the young Vulture’s neck.
It struggled and thrashed desperately, but its movements only caused the loop to tighten, restricting it more and more.
Soon, with the three of them pulling together, they managed to drag the young Vulture up the beach, safely out of reach of the waves.
Jiang Si slightly loosened the rope around its neck, allowing it to breathe properly.
Once the young Vulture recovered, it immediately lunged, trying to attack them with its sharp talons.
But it quickly discovered that it couldn’t fly—its wing seemed to be broken.
’Vultures are highly intelligent,’ Jiang Si thought. ’If I show it some goodwill, it should understand.’
Jiang Si started by tossing a few small fish in front of it, then tentatively reached out to touch its feathers.
The young Vulture instantly flew into a rage, screeching loudly.
Jiang Si immediately pulled back her hand and retreated to a safe distance.
’Giving it fish, trying to pet it... it’s all part of a slow process of approach.’
’Once it gets used to me, it won’t resist my touch anymore.’
The Vulture disdained the fish she’d tossed it. Perhaps they were too small, not even enough for a single bite.
’To tame it, getting it to accept food is the first step.’
Jiang Si decided to use the kudzu vines to weave a large net, intending to catch some bigger fish for the Vulture.
Jiang Si was experienced at weaving nets, so it didn’t take her long to finish the task.
The net had a wide mesh, so it could only catch large fish.
Now she needed to find a good spot to cast her net. She scouted the area, tentatively set the net down, then turned back to the woods to search for a plant that could tranquilize the young Vulture.
’If I can tranquilize the Vulture, I can treat its wound.’
’If I spend all this time saving it and it still can’t fly, it’ll all be for nothing.’
’Since there’s still time to save it, I have to act fast.’
Soon, Jiang Si found a fruit with a narcotic effect. It grew buried in the earth. The Vulture was large, so it would need a significant dose. She dug for a long time before she had finally gathered just enough.
