Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

Chapter 261: Seeing Dr. Hayes Again

"That’s wonderful!" Sierra Sullivan’s smile grew even brighter. "I just knew Captain Grant was a good person! So helpful!"

Hector Grant had already stood up and was about to come around from behind his desk. When he heard what Sierra Sullivan said, he stumbled and nearly tripped over the desk.

"Alright, alright!"

Hector Grant looked helplessly at Sierra Sullivan. "No need to hand me any more ’good person cards.’ Two is more than enough."

"How could that possibly be enough?" Sierra Sullivan shook her head in disagreement. "You can never have too many ’good person cards’."

"So, are we going or not?" Hector Grant’s eyes widened. "If you’re not, then I have other things to attend to. It’s New Year’s Eve, after all, and things are pretty hectic."

"We’re going!" Sierra Sullivan quickly set aside her teasing. "Yes, yes, we’re going! Right now!"

With Hector Grant leading the way, they finally met Dr. Hayes half an hour later.

They had walked at a brisk pace, yet it still took them a full half-hour to reach Dr. Hayes.

The last few minutes of the journey involved passing through one security checkpoint after another.

This just went to show how highly Subterra regarded Dr. Hayes.

Dr. Hayes’s previous laboratory had been a converted residential apartment.

The space had been too small and the layout impractical; for the most part, he had just been making do.

But things were different now.

Even without seeing the entire facility, they could tell from their surroundings that this laboratory was meticulously designed and highly professional.

The lab appeared to be bustling with activity. People in white coats hurried back and forth nonstop.

Someone else brought a document over for Dr. Hayes to review and sign.

They had been sitting for five minutes, but Sierra Sullivan’s group still hadn’t managed to exchange a single word with Dr. Hayes.

After signing another document, Dr. Hayes said to the person, "Whatever it is, no one is to disturb me again until I leave this room."

"Understood!"

The man left with the document, and the reception room at last fell silent.

Dr. Hayes might have been busy, but he had an excellent memory and recognized Sierra Sullivan and the others at a glance.

"For you to rush over to see me at a time like this, you must have something important to discuss. There’s no need for formalities. Just speak freely."

Sierra Sullivan didn’t speak right away. Instead, she looked toward Hector Grant.

Without a single word being spoken, Hector Grant understood what she meant.

Hector Grant was speechless.

Hector Grant had always considered himself a good-tempered person, but right now, he felt an urge to curse.

Some people use you and toss you aside, burning the bridge after they cross it, but at least they make an effort to keep up appearances.

But not Sierra Sullivan. They weren’t even done with him—they were only halfway across the bridge, and she was already trying to kick him off.

Worse, she wouldn’t say it outright. She just gave him *that look* and expected him to get the hint.

’This is just too much!’

Hector Grant’s eyes widened. "What’s going on? Is there something I’m not supposed to know?"

Sierra Sullivan blinked. "Captain Grant! You know, Captain Grant is such a good person—"

"That’s enough!" Hector Grant cut her off. "Don’t say another word. I’ll wait for you outside."

With that, Hector Grant stood up and walked out.

’If I don’t get out of here, I’m going to be plastered with ’good person cards’!’

Hector Grant found the situation both amusing and exasperating. He wasn’t an overly curious person, however, and had no interest in prying into other people’s secrets.

If Sierra Sullivan didn’t want him to know, there was surely a good reason. As such, he felt no need to press the issue.

Watching Hector Grant leave, Sierra Sullivan sighed to herself.

’No matter how you look at it, Hector Grant is a pretty decent guy.’

’Working with someone like him wouldn’t be so bad.’

The thought popped into her head, but Sierra Sullivan quickly pushed it aside.

’This isn’t the time to be thinking about that.’

"Dr. Hayes, we actually came to see you today because there’s something I’d like to ask."

Dr. Hayes’s expression was neutral. He simply nodded. "Go ahead."

"It’s about Candice Tate. She’s suddenly able to... perceive things. Why is that? Do you understand what I’m trying to say?"

"Is this a sudden development?" Dr. Hayes sat up a little straighter, his expression growing more serious. He turned his gaze to Candice Tate, his eyes filled with curiosity and a desire to investigate.

There was also a brilliant gleam in them that was impossible to ignore.

Seeing that look in Dr. Hayes’s eyes, Sierra Sullivan’s first reaction was one of discomfort.

But she quickly talked herself down.

’Researchers like Dr. Hayes aren’t like most people.’

’It’s only natural for him to get excited when he encounters something that interests him. It’s understandable.’

"Yes, it happened suddenly," Sierra Sullivan replied.

Dr. Hayes seemed not to have heard her. He just stared intently at Candice Tate, clearly waiting for her to answer for herself.

Candice Tate wasn’t afraid of Dr. Hayes.

In her eyes, Dr. Hayes was a brilliant man who had helped her before.

So, even with Dr. Hayes staring at her so intently, Candice Tate wasn’t the least bit nervous. She simply answered his question obediently.

"It just started happening all of a sudden!" Candice Tate answered dutifully.

Only then did Dr. Hayes nod. "I believe you’ve likely awakened a Second Superpower. This power is probably related to spiritual power, or perhaps precognition. But to know the specifics, we’ll have to do some research."

"Research?"

Sierra Sullivan didn’t consider herself a luddite, nor did she hold any prejudice against Dr. Hayes.

But when she heard him say that, her heart instinctively clenched.

Dr. Hayes didn’t seem to notice the change in Sierra Sullivan’s tone and continued, "Yes. If you truly want to know the cause, I can conduct some research."

Candice Tate said nothing, instead looking to Sierra Sullivan.

’I’ll listen to Sierra!’

’Whatever Sierra says, goes!’

Sierra Sullivan hesitated.

She wanted to know what was going on, but she didn’t want Candice Tate to be a test subject.

As she was hesitating, she felt her hand being gently squeezed.

She turned to see Jayce looking at her, his eyes gentle yet firm.

"Sierra, don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Just do what you feel is right. Both Candice Tate and I will support your decision unconditionally."

Sierra Sullivan took a deep breath, nodded, and then said to Dr. Hayes, "Thank you, Dr. Hayes, but that won’t be necessary."

’It’s better not to have her studied.’

’If Dr. Hayes’s guess is correct, then Candice Tate must have awakened a Second Superpower.’

’Whatever kind of Superpower it is, it shouldn’t be harmful to her body.’

’It doesn’t matter that we don’t know exactly what this Superpower is or how to use it right now.’

’In time, we’ll figure it out naturally.’

Dr. Hayes’s face remained impassive, his expression unruffled. He didn’t seem at all surprised by Sierra Sullivan’s decision.
