Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

Chapter 237: A Sudden Strange Change

Hector Grant’s heart warmed at Candice Tate’s words.

He had joined the military at a very young age.

He had slowly climbed the ranks, his position growing ever higher, and the weight of his responsibilities ever heavier.

At some point, he had grown accustomed to shouldering everything.

Everyone around him either trusted him or depended on him.

It had been a long, long time since anyone had spoken to him with such a tone.

Someone wasn’t treating him as a pillar of support, but instead was asking him to make a request—and promising to fulfill it.

The novel sensation left Hector Grant in a bit of a daze.

The feeling was a pleasant one.

But he quickly suppressed it.

As much as he enjoyed the feeling, his reality wouldn’t allow for it.

In his position, there were too many things waiting to be done.

Hector Grant smiled at Candice Tate. "Thank you, Candice, but these two are more than enough. You’re tired, too. Go rest for a bit. I need to talk with your sister and the others."

Candice Tate wasn’t an unreasonable child. She understood that Hector Grant and the others were about to discuss serious matters, so she nodded obediently. She walked over to a small sofa that was hers, sat down, picked up a book, and began to read intently.

Candice Tate was very talented with her Superpower.

In their current environment, a powerful Superpower trumped everything else.

With a strong enough Superpower, one could live a life of privilege.

It didn’t even matter if you were illiterate; it wasn’t like there were any jobs that required reading anyway.

Sierra Sullivan didn’t know if the world would ever return to normal, but she still felt that a child Candice Tate’s age shouldn’t give up on her education.

So, she set aside time every day to teach Candice Tate.

Sierra Sullivan wasn’t a professional teacher and had never studied early childhood education, so she could only teach using her own methods.

Every day, they’d cover twenty new Chinese characters, twenty new English words, and they couldn’t neglect math, either.

Perhaps her Superpower also had a developmental effect on her brain, because none of this was difficult for Candice Tate, who was just over five years old.

In fact, Candice Tate only needed an hour each day to master all the material.

After observing for a few days, Sierra Sullivan picked up the pace.

’Since Candice is so talented, I can’t hold her back.’

Fortunately, she had textbooks in her space.

She had a full set, from elementary all the way through middle and high school.

As for anything beyond that, they could worry about it later.

With the textbooks, her learning became more systematic, and her progress accelerated.

Now, Candice Tate was already working on second-semester, first-grade material.

She had already finished learning pinyin.

She could already read storybooks with pinyin annotations on her own, completely engrossed.

And that was exactly what she was doing now—reading a storybook.

Watching Candice Tate read so intently, Sierra Sullivan felt a swell of pride.

’Such an amazing little girl, and I’m the one who taught her!’

"Ahem!"

Hector Grant’s light cough drew Sierra Sullivan’s attention back to him.

Sierra Sullivan raised an eyebrow at Hector Grant. "Captain Grant, if you have something to say, just say it."

"I’ve been thinking, we can’t just keep waiting. This isn’t a solution," Hector Grant said.

Sierra Sullivan wasn’t surprised to hear him say that.

She had been through all of this before.

If the man standing before her weren’t different, Sierra Sullivan might have thought she’d gone back in time.

Hector Grant continued, "I’m planning to go out and scout ahead."

That, however, Sierra Sullivan didn’t quite understand. "What do you mean?"

"I’ll take a few people and drive out to assess the situation. If the roads are passable, then everyone can set out together. If not, we’ll have no choice but to keep waiting. So, during the time I’m gone, I’d like to ask you to keep an eye on things here. The main thing is to protect the Space Ability Users who are carrying the supplies.

Of course, I won’t take all of my men with me. I’ll leave most of them behind, but their capabilities are limited. I just hope that if they need help, you’ll be there to lend a hand."

Hector Grant didn’t want to go out on a scouting trip only to return and find he’d lost control of his own base.

While he was here, the other Superpower Users were reasonably well-behaved.

But once he was gone, who knew what kind of ideas they might get.

"I think you’re giving them too much credit," Sierra Sullivan said with a smile. "Even if they did manage to get control of the Space Ability Users, they have no way of leaving this place. What good would that do them when you get back? Anyone with half a brain wouldn’t try to stir up trouble right now."

Hector Grant shook his head helplessly. "I know you have a point, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Please!"

With Hector Grant having said all that, his attitude so sincere, what else could Sierra Sullivan say?

She could only agree, of course.

Sierra Sullivan nodded. "Don’t worry! You can leave it to us!"

Hearing Sierra Sullivan’s words, the great weight on Hector Grant’s heart was finally lifted.

With his biggest worry resolved, Hector Grant wasted no more time.

Early the next morning, just after breakfast, Hector Grant left with twenty men.

Many people, their hearts filled with excitement, went down to the first floor. Braving the raging sandstorm, they watched as Hector Grant and his team drove away.

The wind was fierce, but the vehicle seemed relatively stable as it moved forward, not looking as if it would be blown over.

This ignited a spark of hope in many people’s hearts.

’If the car can drive, doesn’t that mean we can finally leave this place?’

Just as everyone was feeling joyful,

they suddenly heard a different sound cut through the howling wind.

It was the roar of an Aberrant Beast, followed by the sound of sharp claws slapping and scraping against the vehicle’s body.

Before anyone could process what was happening, they saw the vehicle flying toward them, spinning through the air.

It was none other than the very same vehicle that had just departed.

Seeing the vehicle hurtling toward them, everyone panicked and scrambled to get out of the way.

The heavy vehicle slammed into the building with a tremendous crash.

If the building hadn’t been previously reinforced by a Gold Ability User, that single impact would have likely been enough to make it collapse.

Although it didn’t collapse, the wall was now deeply dented.

The men Hector Grant had left behind didn’t hesitate for a second. They immediately rushed forward, trying desperately to pry open the car door.

But the frame was twisted, and no matter how hard they pulled, the door wouldn’t budge.

It took several Gold Ability Users working together, using their power to manipulate the metal, to finally wrench the deformed door open.

The scene inside the car was grim.

The people inside weren’t wearing any protective gear. As the vehicle spun, they were tossed around violently. Many were injured, their faces covered in blood, and most had already lost consciousness.

Hector Grant was in no better shape than the others, but his willpower was immense. Despite his face being covered in blood, he remained conscious.
