Chapter 225: Wherever Sister Is, Candice Tate Is
"See? Nothing happened."
"Exactly! Didn’t he get to the vehicle without a hitch?"
"And she was saying zombies could be hiding in the sand. How’s that possible?"
"Zombies are zombies. How could they have brains? And how could they possibly wait for us in the sand? Some people just spout nonsense, and now we’ve wasted a whole morning waiting here because of them."
A cacophony of voices rose one after another.
At first, the voices were quiet, but soon, their murmuring grew louder and louder.
One of the bolder ones shot a pointed look at Sierra Sullivan, then announced loudly, "I’m going too! I’m going to show certain people whether there are any zombies out there or not!"
With that, he strode confidently toward the door.
But when he reached the doorway, he paused for a moment.
After a moment, he took a deep breath and stepped outside.
Watching him, many people felt their hearts leap into their throats.
One success didn’t prove anything; it could have just been good luck.
But if this man also made it to the vehicle safely, it would mean there probably wasn’t any real danger outside.
Amidst the crowd’s tense anticipation, the man reached the side of the vehicle without incident, opened the door, and got in.
Seeing the door close, many people let out a long sigh of relief.
"Looks like there’s really nothing out there. I’m going too!"
"Me too! Let’s go together!"
"And me..."
This time, a group of three headed out.
Traveling together, they could lend each other some courage.
The trio walked quickly, eventually breaking into a light jog.
But the ground beneath their feet was soft sand.
It was fine while walking; they could keep their balance.
But once they started running, their feet sank easily into the sand, causing them to stumble and sway. They would have been faster just walking.
But the three of them didn’t stop.
They just ran for their lives toward the vehicle, finally reaching it after much stumbling.
Only after they had successfully boarded and shut the door did the three let out long sighs of relief.
Cold sweat was still trickling down their temples, but the three of them were so drained of strength they couldn’t be bothered to wipe it away. They just gasped for air, hoping to calm themselves down.
The two people already in the vehicle didn’t mock the trio when they saw their state.
They had just gone through the same experience and understood perfectly how the others felt.
It was indeed a short distance. Nothing unexpected had happened on the way, and they had all boarded safely in the end.
But the safer they felt inside the vehicle, the more panic and lingering fear they felt as they replayed what had just happened.
"Did you guys feel..."
"Are you trying to ask if we felt like we were being watched?"
"To be precise, it felt like we were being watched by *many* things. But I’m sure it wasn’t the feeling of being watched by people."
Speaking of being watched, Hector Grant and the others had been staring at them from the moment they stepped outside.
But those gazes held no aggression, only curiosity and anticipation.
Those gazes were completely different from the dangerous ones they had just felt.
The five of them looked at each other, momentarily at a loss for words.
They now realized there might have been some truth to what Sierra Sullivan had said.
They wanted to warn Sierra Sullivan and the others.
But none of them had walkie-talkies.
The vehicle was several dozen meters from the gate; even if they shouted, the people on the other side might not hear them clearly.
More importantly, they were also afraid.
’What if we open the door and run into danger?’
There were only five of them, and cooped up in the vehicle, they couldn’t even use their Superpowers.
’It wasn’t that they were cold-blooded; they were just powerless to help!’
At that moment, the five of them had completely overlooked another problem.
None of the five were Space Ability Users, and they had only brought a small amount of food and water with them.
If the people on the other side didn’t come over, the five of them would soon run out of supplies.
But right now, they couldn’t think that far ahead.
「Elsewhere.」
Seeing that the trio had also boarded safely, even more people were tempted.
Before heading out, each person would cast a pointed glance at Sierra Sullivan and Hector Grant.
They didn’t say a word, but their meaning was obvious.
Sierra Sullivan paid no mind to the crowd’s mockery.
She trusted her intuition.
Even though the current situation differed from her prediction, she didn’t think her speculation was wrong.
More and more people walked outside, and all of them made it to the vehicle safely.
Seeing this, Hector Grant’s subordinates were also getting restless.
"Captain, from the looks of it, there shouldn’t be a problem. Why don’t we take our people over?"
"Yeah, Captain! It’s only a few dozen meters. Nothing’s likely to happen. If we move fast, we can be on board in two minutes."
"What could happen in two minutes?"
"Once we’re on the vehicle, we can head straight back to Subterra! Just waiting around here isn’t a solution!"
Listening to his subordinates, Hector Grant felt extremely conflicted.
On one hand, he trusted Sierra Sullivan’s judgment.
But on the other, he was starting to waver.
’So many people have gone over without any trouble. Maybe there really isn’t a problem?’
’Besides, the apocalypse is filled with danger everywhere.’
’If we’re so scared of danger that we don’t even go outside, we might as well have stayed in Subterra and never left...’
At this thought, Hector Grant gritted his teeth and finally made a decision.
"Have the Space Ability Users come out!"
The ones who had gone before were not Space Ability Users.
The ones they needed to prioritize protecting were these Space Ability Users.
The Space Ability Users emerged from their rooms one by one, their expressions complicated.
On one hand, they felt that there might really be no danger, but at the same time, they couldn’t help but worry.
Their anxiety grew, especially when they saw that Sierra Sullivan and her small group showed no signs of moving.
But Hector Grant had already made his decision and was going to lead them out.
If they didn’t follow, they would be in even greater danger without the protection of Hector Grant and his people.
Regardless of their inner turmoil, the Space Ability Users were ultimately escorted by Hector Grant’s team, protected in the center of the formation as they all headed for the door.
Hector Grant didn’t speak to Sierra Sullivan or her companions, and Sierra also remained silent, just watching quietly.
Candice Tate held Sierra Sullivan’s hand and looked up at her. "Sister, aren’t we going out?"
"Does Candice want to go?" Sierra Sullivan asked in return.
Candice Tate shook her head. "Wherever Sister is, that’s where Candice will be."
’Even if everyone else leaves, as long as Sister is here, I’ll stay here.’
’I don’t care if other people believe Sister or not.’
’I’ll always believe in Sister, no matter what!’
Just as Sierra Sullivan was about to speak, disaster struck outside.
