Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

Chapter 221: I See You Aren’t Lacking for Food and Drink, Yet You Still Eat This Kind of Thing?

It all happened so fast that no one else saw what was going on outside.

It wasn’t until they heard the heavy door slam shut and saw the lingering fear on Hector Grant’s face that they slowly began to process what had happened.

"Captain Grant, what’s wrong? Why did you suddenly slam the door shut?"

"Yeah! What happened?"

"What’s out there?"

Hector Grant’s expression was grim. He didn’t immediately answer their questions.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, but that he had no idea what had just happened outside either.

He hadn’t even gotten a clear look at what had just attacked him.

If his reflexes hadn’t been fast enough, he might already be dead.

It wasn’t that Hector Grant was afraid of dying.

’Everyone has to die sometime.’

’Especially in the apocalypse—death is even more commonplace.’

But he refused to die without even knowing what killed him.

If he was going to die, he at least wanted to know what had taken his life.

After calming himself for another moment, Hector Grant finally spoke in a low voice.

"The moment I opened the door, something outside attacked me. It was so fast I didn’t get a clear look at what it was."

Hector Grant sounded frustrated as he said this.

If he had just been able to see what it was, they could be planning a counter-strategy right now.

Instead, with everyone asking questions, he had nothing to tell them, let alone anything else.

Hearing Hector Grant’s words, the others exchanged uncertain glances.

’Something attacked Hector Grant?’

’It has to be an Aberrant Beast or a zombie. What else could it be?’

’Did Hector Grant really need to get that spooked?’

The way those on their first mission with Hector Grant looked at him began to change.

’We’d always heard how capable he was.’

’But now, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case at all!’

’It was just an Aberrant Beast or a zombie, and it scared him like this.’

’A guy like this is our captain? Is he really worthy of our obedience?’

Although they didn’t voice their thoughts, their expressions betrayed them.

Hector Grant saw the looks in their eyes but felt no desire to explain himself.

’After all, I’m the one who messed up. This is my responsibility.’

"Captain Grant, what’s the plan now? We can’t just wait here forever, can we?"

The house was sealed incredibly well.

There were no windows, not even a peephole.

There must have been surveillance cameras before, which would have let them see outside.

But there were none now.

Other than opening the main door, there was no other way to see what was out there.

Although Hector Grant felt it was his fault, he wasn’t about to let others taunt him. Hearing the question, he shot a cold glare at the speaker. "If you don’t want to wait here, what’s your plan?"

"Go out, of course!" The man lifted his chin. "If Captain Grant doesn’t dare to open the door and take a look, then I’ll do it! But I can’t be the one to charge ahead for free, right, Captain Grant?"

Hector Grant laughed.

’Truly, men die in the pursuit of wealth, just as birds die for food.’

’Even at a time like this, all he can think about is how to squeeze some benefits out of me.’

’Well, if he’s willing to put his own safety on the line for personal gain, I might as well indulge him.’

"Fine. You lead the way, and I’ll give you an extra one thousand Contribution Points. Everyone here can bear witness, so you don’t have to worry about me backing out on the deal."

Hearing Hector Grant’s offer, the man broke into a satisfied smile.

’That’s a full thousand Contribution Points!’

’Just for being the first one out, I get a free thousand Contribution Points. Only an idiot would say no!’

"Deal!" He nodded vigorously, his voice booming as if to ensure everyone present could hear him clearly.

"I’ll be the first one out! I’ll show everyone how it’s done! You can open the door now, Captain Grant!"

Hector Grant gave him a long, deep look before stepping forward to open the door.

After unlocking the final lock, Hector Grant didn’t immediately pull the door open. Instead, he turned to the man beside him.

"I’m giving you one last chance. You can still back out now. Once that door is open, it’ll be too late for regrets."

The man just snorted. "No need to persuade me, Captain Grant, I’ve already made up my mind! You might not know this about me, Captain, but I love a good challenge. Haven’t you heard? With great risk comes great reward!"

At his words, the way the others looked at him changed.

He wasn’t wrong. Great risk often came with great reward.

’But that was before the apocalypse!’

’In this situation, who knows if there’s any reward, but there’s definitely risk.’

Hector Grant had wanted to offer a few more words of caution, but seeing the man’s attitude, he swallowed them back down.

’You can’t talk a man out of his own grave.’

’It’s useless to persuade him, so why bother?’

"I’m opening the door."

With that, Hector Grant acted without any further hesitation, pulling one side of the large door open.

The door had barely opened wide enough for one person to pass through when a hand suddenly shot in from outside.

The hand moved with incredible speed, seizing the man by the throat in the blink of an eye.

The man never expected this to happen. He was so stunned he didn’t even react, completely forgetting to dodge.

It wasn’t until a sharp pain shot through his neck and his breathing became difficult that he finally realized what was happening.

Perhaps because he was in such a panic, he didn’t even use his Superpower. He just stared desperately at Hector Grant, his eyes pleading for help.

In truth, even if the man hadn’t begged for help, Hector Grant would never have stood by and watched him die.

The moment he got a clear look at the hand, Hector Grant’s pupils contracted. He immediately manipulated a long metal blade, sending it slashing viciously at the arm.

The arm was instantly severed in two, but no blood gushed from the wound.

Hector Grant kicked out the door, sending the figure outside flying back, before forcefully slamming the door shut again.

The man who had been choked was now lying on the ground, his eyes rolling back in their sockets.

It wasn’t his fault; the hand’s grip was just too tight.

Even though it had been cut off, it remained clamped around his neck, showing no sign of letting go.

Seeing that no one was moving, Sierra Sullivan walked over and pried the hand off.

His throat finally free, the man gasped for air, a look of lingering terror on his face.

Hector Grant walked over as well, not even glancing at the man on the floor. Instead, he joined Sierra Sullivan in examining the severed arm.

Jayce came over too. He stared intently at the arm for a moment before speaking uncertainly, "Why do I feel like... this looks a little familiar?"

Hearing this, Hector Grant looked at Jayce in shock. "I thought you guys were well-fed. You actually eat this kind of stuff?"

Jayce: "..."

"..." Sierra Sullivan ground her teeth. "Who said anything about it being ’cooked’?"
