Chapter 874: Don’t Forget What You Promised Me

Chloe Reed looked at him, her eyes tinged with a complex emotion. "Let’s head back first."

"Alright."

She couldn’t calm her turbulent emotions on the way back, completely unable to forget what had happened on the night of the Spring Festival. Once they were in the car, she asked, "Can you find out when Jasper Holloway will land in Breyburn?"

"I have people keeping an eye on it," Walker Grant said. "I’ll tell you as soon as there’s news."

Chloe gave a soft murmur of acknowledgment.

Walker sensed her distant attitude, and his grip tightened slightly. He wanted to say something, but Chloe beat him to it. "You go back first. I need to make a trip to the hospital."

Walker’s breath hitched before he replied, "I’ll go with you. He protected you, and I haven’t even thanked him yet."

"There’s no need." Chloe rejected the idea without hesitation. "I’ll just go check on him myself."

"Chloe?" Walker turned his head toward her. His eyes were still wrapped in white gauze, showing no signs of improvement.

A hint of bewilderment and helplessness surfaced on his handsome face, as if he couldn’t understand why she was suddenly being so cold to him.

Chloe averted her gaze, unable to look at him. She merely said, "I’ll be back soon."

Walker’s throat felt dry, and a dull ache spread across his chest. He tugged at his thin lips into a forced smile. "Do you feel like I’m in the way?"

Chloe’s eyelashes fluttered, not expecting him to say that. "No," she denied.

"Chloe." Walker’s tone darkened. "Don’t forget what you promised me."

Chloe looked at him. His expression had already returned to its usual coldness, making that earlier flash of lost helplessness seem like a mere illusion. She had promised him that if his eyes never recovered, she would stay by his side forever.

Chloe’s fingers curled inward. "I haven’t forgotten."

Of course she would always stay with him—provided she survived. Provided she could escape the Holloways unharmed. When that time came, she would naturally fulfill her promise. More than anything, she hoped Walker’s eyes would heal so he could return to his former proud and noble self. He shouldn’t be wearing such a cautious, fragile expression. That wasn’t him at all.

Walker released her hand. "As long as you haven’t forgotten."

Silence fell over the car, the atmosphere growing inexplicably oppressive.

The car drove straight to the hospital. Chloe stepped out, standing by the door as she said, "You go back first." With that, she shut the door and turned to leave.

"Mr. Grant?" the driver asked, sounding confused.

"We aren’t leaving," Walker said. "We wait here." He pressed a button on his phone and listened as the screen reader announced the current time.

The driver felt a sudden chill permeate the car and couldn’t help but tense up.

Chloe pushed open the door to the hospital room and saw Preston Vance standing by the window, looking out.

Hearing the noise, he turned around and smiled. "Chloe, is everything taken care of?"

"Yes." Chloe nodded. "I went to see them. It breaks my heart."

A trace of helplessness crossed Preston’s face. "None of us wanted this to happen. Those people are just too arrogant." He paused before asking, "You mentioned before that it’s dangerous around you. Is this the kind of danger you meant? Chloe, what exactly have you been through?"

Chloe offered a helpless, wry smile. "Someone doesn’t want me alive. It’s as simple as that."
