Chapter 873: The Mysterious Organization
“It’s Nyx.”
“What?!” William Quinn’s voice rose in pitch. “Didn’t Nyx disappear a long time ago? Why would they suddenly show up? Are you kidding me?”
Nyx was a living nightmare for all mercenaries. Ever since the organization appeared out of nowhere, they had completely disrupted the global balance of power. Wherever there was a conflict, Nyx would show up, throw the local disputes into absolute chaos, and cause heavy losses for all factions involved. Nyx had no principles; they did whatever they pleased.
William had built his own organization and faction to counter the Sinclair Family, ensuring they never had a day of peace, while also making some extra cash on the side. Other mercenary groups likely had similar mindsets—after all, this line of business brought in money incredibly fast.
But Nyx was different. Someone had once offered a sky-high price to hire the organization, only to have their request pinned to the front page of the dark web, with Nyx openly mocking them and stating they wouldn’t even bat an eye at such a pathetic sum.
During the time Nyx was active, no one dared to provoke them. Everyone kept their heads down and their tails tucked between their legs, terrified of being targeted and losing absolutely everything. However, exactly two years ago, Nyx suddenly vanished without a trace.
At first, the leaders of the other mercenary groups remained extremely cautious. It wasn’t until another half a year passed with no sign of Nyx that everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief and returned to their previous modes of operation.
And now, Nyx had actually resurfaced, going so far as to instigate a direct confrontation between the Sinclair Family and William.
The Sinclair Family was the family of William’s father. They used to be so suppressed by William that they didn’t even dare breathe a word in protest, but now, they actually had the nerve to go against him. They wondered if it was because they had Nyx’s support.
His subordinate’s voice was filled with sheer terror. “Sir, it’s obvious that Nyx is coming for us. What should we do?”
William closed his eyes. When he opened them, his blue irises were tinged with a ruthless, sinister glint. “Contact them. I want a meeting!”
“Yes, sir.”
However, William was unable to secure a meeting with Nyx. Backed by the elusive organization, the Sinclair Family launched even fiercer strikes against him. His assets evaporated like bubbles, and his subordinates suffered devastating casualties. Eventually, he was forced to flee the country with Iris Yates—though that was a story for another time.
Breyburn.
Soltara was undergoing renovations and reorganization. Dylan Finch had already tallied the number of victims: ten people had died at the hands of the mercenaries, and seven were severely injured and still hospitalized.
The Grant Group offered extremely generous compensation and promised that the relatives of the deceased could work at the company with excellent salaries. Only then did the situation gradually settle down.
After the eighth day of the Lunar New Year, Chloe Reed and Walker Grant went to the cemetery to mourn the victims. A cold wind swept past. The tombstones bore photos of the victims from when they were alive; one by one, vibrant lives had simply been snuffed out.
Chloe felt incredibly heartbroken. She bowed deeply, overwhelmed with self-blame and guilt. She knew she was the one who had implicated these innocent people. Her eyes stung, and sorrowful tears fell down her cheeks.
Sensing her emotional shift, Walker took her hand. “Chloe, don’t be sad. You didn’t do it on purpose.”
Chloe sniffled. “I want revenge.”
Not just for herself, but for these innocent people.
“Alright, I’m with you,” Walker replied softly, tightening his grip on her hand.
