Chapter 219 - 161: Don’t Tell Me You Want Me to Do That Kind of Thing?
With that one threat, the call ended.
Lin Jiang called He Siyao again. It rang several times before she finally picked up.
"Where are you?"
CRACKLE—CRACKLE—
"I, I’m at..."
The sound of static accompanied He Siyao’s voice, making it impossible to understand what she was saying.
"Speak up, I can barely hear you."
"I, I’m at Hua..."
The static from the phone drowned out He Siyao’s voice.
Lin Jiang listened carefully, but her voice kept cutting in and out, making it impossible to even guess.
"I’ll share my location with you."
After hanging up, Lin Jiang sent her a request to share her location, and at the same time, he saw her position appear.
She was in the Huafeng District.
The place wasn’t far from the Haojie Clubhouse, less than a twenty-minute walk.
Once he had her location, Lin Jiang drove over.
This was an older neighborhood, and the property management wasn’t very strict. When he saw the security guard at the gate, Lin Jiang made up an excuse about picking up an elderly family member for a doctor’s visit, and the guard let him through.
Following the address on the map, Lin Jiang drove down the road and soon spotted He Siyao.
She was sitting hunched over on the edge of a planter, the dim streetlight casting a pall of immense loneliness over her.
"Let’s go. This isn’t the place to talk."
He Siyao nodded, got up, and walked toward the gate.
Lin Jiang took He Siyao to his car, drove to a nearby five-star hotel, and got a business suite.
"You can stay here tonight. Go take a shower first. I’ve ordered some food. We can talk about whatever happened after we eat."
"Thank you."
That "thank you" left Lin Jiang at a bit of a loss for how to respond.
’I was their target. She was just unlucky enough to get caught in the middle and become a scapegoat.’
"Go take a shower first. We’ll talk later."
"Okay."
When He Siyao came out, Lin Jiang felt as if he had been transported back to his university days.
Her natural beauty shone through, unadorned and pure.
With He Siyao’s looks and temperament, heavy makeup didn’t suit her at all.
"Let’s eat first. You can tell me everything slowly."
"Okay."
She sat down timidly in a chair. Lin Jiang sat across from her, his expression unreadable.
Like most other girls, He Siyao didn’t eat particularly fast, but you couldn’t call her manner of eating elegant.
Working at a place like that, they were provided with staff meals.
Everyone ate together, so there wasn’t much opportunity for her to eat gracefully.
As she ate, tears began to stream down He Siyao’s face.
What often breaks a person isn’t a life of hardship, but a fleeting glimpse of light.
Quietly, Lin Jiang passed her a tissue.
He Siyao took it silently and wiped the tears from her cheeks.
"I’m full. Thank you for the meal."
"Don’t always have ’thank you’ on the tip of your tongue. If anyone should be saying it, it’s me to you."
Lin Jiang sat back down. "Take your time. Tell me what happened."
"To be honest, I don’t really know what happened either."
He Siyao said in a low voice,
"After work, I was walking back to my dorm. When I came out, I saw a car following me. I got really scared, so I hailed a cab. But when I got out at the entrance to my residential complex, I saw the car was still there. I started running for my dorm, but the people from the car chased after me and blocked my path."
"And then? What did they say?" Lin Jiang asked, his face expressionless.
"They just asked if someone was trying to buy the Haojie Clubhouse. I told them I didn’t know anything."
He Siyao’s expression was calm as she looked at Lin Jiang.
"Don’t worry, I didn’t say anything."
Lin Jiang’s expression grew cold. "Keep talking."
"The leader snatched my phone. He saw our chat history and figured out you were the one trying to buy the Haojie Clubhouse. Then he made the voice call to you."
"What about after the call? What else did they say?"
"They told me to tell you not to get any ideas about the Haojie Clubhouse, or else..."
"Or else what?"
"They said they’d kill you."
"Heh..."
Lin Jiang couldn’t help but laugh. It was amusing that someone who only had the guts to harass He Siyao was threatening to kill him.
"Do you remember what they looked like?"
He Siyao recalled the incident.
"He had short hair and a build similar to yours."
Lin Jiang nodded, thinking silently.
’I can now be sure that the people who came looking for trouble are Lin Jiansheng’s men. But I don’t know who specifically.’
’But there’s still a question. How did they know I wanted to buy the Haojie Clubhouse?’
’Could they have a mole inside the clubhouse?’
"Besides you and Feng Huiying, who else knows about this?"
"Only our manager," He Siyao said.
"After I went back, I found our vice president and told him someone wanted to buy the clubhouse, asking him to relay the message to President Dai."
"You have access to your vice president?"
"I don’t normally. Sister Ying asked me to go deliver the message. She wanted me to make a good impression on President Fu, thinking he might look out for me and maybe raise my base salary and commission."
Lin Jiang smiled. "I bet she also told you to hint at the relationship between us to your vice president."
"She did say that, but don’t get the wrong idea. I didn’t say anything. I would never use our connection for personal gain."
"It wouldn’t have mattered if you did. It’s the truth."
Lin Jiang stood up and stretched a little, looking at He Siyao’s face.
"You’ve been wronged today."
"Not at all. You gave me a lot of business yesterday, and I earned a lot of extra money. I should be the one thanking you."
"Let’s not talk about that. Get some rest."
"What about you?" He Siyao looked at Lin Jiang. "Are you leaving?"
"What’s the point of leaving at this hour? I’m no saint, and I’m not in the habit of pretending to be pure."
