Chapter 116: Red and Violet
Being knocked out by a ball of poisonous energy was not on Kain’s to-do list. Granted, he didn’t consider it as himself being knocked out. It was that voice that was knocked out.
Either way, no matter who was knocked out, Kain woke up more than two hours later, disoriented and with a deadly headache.
The first thing he did was look around for the children. They weren’t in his arms when he woke up. Panic gripped his heart, and he began yelling their names.
He jogged to their room to check if they were there.
Before he could open the door, a head popped out. Ashton’s eyes sparkled when he saw Kain, "Dad, come here, look."
The second he saw Ashton, relief flooded his system. The tension in his body disappeared, and his knees buckled.
He scooped Ashton up into his arms, then stepped into the room.
The moment he stepped in, his jaw dropped. His eyes almost popped out of his skull.
Avery was in mid-air, doing twirls and twists, pretending to fly and generally giggling her head off.
The surprise wasn’t her floating. The surprise was that he felt the spiritual energy in the room. He felt it coming from Dominic.
It was a flow of energy Dominic shouldn’t have. He was certain the child was still an Awakened. Yet, here he was, doing something an Awakened shouldn’t be able to do for such a length of time.
He swallowed hard, ignoring the lump in his throat. He suppressed the questions in his mind.
Clearing his throat, he finally spoke. "Dom, put your sister down for me. We need to talk."
He watched Avery float slowly to the bed.
Before he said anything, he scooped them up in his arms. He took the time to breathe. He inhaled their scent, then he released them onto the bed.
"Are you all alright? Do you feel sick? Can you still use your powers?" His eyes darted between the trio.
That last question was more for Ashton and Avery. Kain saw very well that Dominic could use his spiritual powers.
Avery giggled. When Kain asked, she pointed to the other side of the room.
When Kain saw it, he wasn’t sure if he should laugh or cry. One section of the room looked like it had gone through a house fire, and the other looked like an earthquake.
He was so worried about them, then caught up with Dominic’s spiritual power, that he hadn’t even noticed the other damage to the room. Now that he’s seen it, he couldn’t help rubbing his forehead.
This is exactly why people tell you not to leave your kids unsupervised. Kain thought.
Seeing they were truly alright, Kain took hold of them again, "Let’s go back, your mother is probably worried."
As soon as they appeared, Amelia hugged them. She didn’t say anything. The warmth of her embrace said more than she ever could.
"We’re fine," he chuckled. "Come, look at me. I want to see if you’ve cried. Haven’t seen in a while."
With her head lowered, she hit him on the arm.
Kain put the children on the floor and stood. As he did, Amelia caught sight of his eyes. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
Kain caught her expression. "What’s wrong?"
"Your eyes..."
Lifting his hand to touch his eyes, he didn’t feel anything. He took a mirror from the space to see what the issue was.
He looked in the mirror. Same face, same nose, but the eyes. They were definitely different. One was red, and the other was violet.
Closing his eyes, he rubbed them one after the other. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
No matter how much he rubbed, the only thing he did was cause the white of his eyes to turn red. But the red and violet irises were still the same.
What the hell?
His eyes darted from Amelia to the mirror. He opened his mouth, but no sound would come out.
He felt someone grabbing his pant leg; he looked down to see Dominic.
"Don’t worry, Dad, it’s not a bad thing."
Kain put the mirror away and lifted Dominic. "Are you talking about my eyes? How do you know it’s not a bad thing?"
"Because your red is gold."
That sentence made no sense to either Kain or Amelia. Luckily, they didn’t have to guess because Dominic continued.
"You used to have two numbers, then they started blending. Now the number is red, but it has gold around it. After Dad helped earlier, I know the red isn’t a bad thing."
"So I’m fine?"
Dominic nodded.
Kain thanked him and put him down. He signalled to Amelia that they could talk about it later or on another day. Hearing Dominic say it’s okay made him feel a bit more at ease. Granted, he’s taking advice from a child. But it’s a child who knows his way around astral numbers.
He decided to let it go for now, but he checked his body nonetheless. He didn’t find any problem. He couldn’t even find the suppressant that’s supposed to be in his body.
"So," he said to Amelia after checking and finally relaxing, "what have you been doing for the past few hours?"
Amelia coughed, "Nothing much, just tidying up."
She didn’t meet Kain’s eyes. He knew she didn’t just ’tidy up’.
"Are you going to tell me, or do I need to go out and ask around?"
"I really didn’t do anything," she said coquettishly.
Kain gave her a face that said he definitely didn’t believe a word she said. He looked around the container. Everything was still intact. He has known Amelia for years; she is never this calm.
The container is intact, so she definitely had a meltdown somewhere else. He watched her innocent expression and moved to step outside.
She grabbed his arm, stopping him.
Finally, she confessed. She told him what she did to the Wiltons. She also told him she ended up having to compensate them.
