Chapter 268: Meeting the Reventon War Party
The morning air carried the weight of anticipation as Damon led his group through the streets of Solaris City.
The Great Solaris Arena loomed ahead, its white stone towers catching the first rays of sunlight.
Banners from every sect in the Eastern Continent fluttered in the breeze, each one a declaration of pride and ambition.
Damon walked at the front with Ariel on his arm.
Mio and Mia flanked them. Seraphina, Alena, and Flare followed close behind.
Selene and Mei brought up the rear, their presence a quiet reminder of the sect’s authority.
Lumina walked beside Damon, her disguise firmly in place.
The artifact around her neck hummed with power, masking her features and her cultivation.
"You ready for this?" Damon asked, keeping his voice low.
Lumina nodded.
"I have been ready for ten years."
The crowd thickened as they approached the arena entrance.
Disciples from various sects milled about, their robes a patchwork of colors and insignias. Some eyed the Azure Dragon group with curiosity.
Others with hostility.
Damon ignored them all.
He had bigger concerns.
They passed through the outer gates and entered the registration courtyard.
Elders and sect leaders gathered in clusters, discussing the tournament rules and the revised age limits.
That was when Damon felt it.
A shift in the air.
A wrongness that settled into his bones like frost creeping through a wound.
He stopped walking.
Ariel noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Damon did not answer.
His Incubus Celestial Eyes activated on instinct, the world sharpening into clarity as his vision pierced through the crowd.
And there he was.
Kai Reventon.
He stood at the far end of the courtyard, flanked by Alistair Reventon and a group of elders wearing deep crimson robes.
The emblem on their chests depicted a bleeding sun, a symbol Damon did not recognize.
But that was not what made him pause.
It was Kai’s aura.
The last time Damon had seen Kai, the man had been a broken wreck, his cultivation crippled, his spirit shattered by Damon’s Chaos Slash.
Now he stood tall.
His eyes burned with a dark, hungry light.
Veins of black energy pulsed beneath his skin, visible even from this distance.
His cultivation pressed against the air like a physical weight, dense and suffocating.
’King Spirit Realm.’
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
’That shouldn’t be possible.’
The System chimed in his mind.
[Host, It seems Kai has been modified using Demonic Arts. His cultivation has been forcibly elevated to King Spirit Realm First Level at the cost of his soul integrity. His lifespan has been reduced by seventy percent.]
Damon’s jaw tightened.
’Demonic arts.’
He had read about them in the sect library.
Forbidden techniques that traded life force for power.
They were outlawed across all five continents.
Anyone caught using them faced execution.
Yet here stood Kai, openly displaying that power in front of the entire tournament.
Alistair Reventon noticed Damon’s gaze.
The old man’s lips curled into a cold, satisfied smile.
He said something to Kai, and Kai turned.
Their eyes met.
Kai’s expression did not shift. There was no anger, no hatred, no triumph.
There was nothing.
Just an empty, hollow stare that promised violence.
Damon felt the killing intent wash over him.
It was different from before.
Before, Kai’s killing intent had been hot, fueled by pride and jealousy. It had been the rage of a spoiled young master who had never been denied.
This was cold.
This was the killing intent of someone who had already died inside and had nothing left to lose.
’He is a dead man walking and he wants to take me with him’ Damon realized..
"Damon."
Selene’s voice cut through his thoughts.
She stepped up beside him, her eyes fixed on Kai with open disdain.
"I see you noticed."
"Who is he with?" Damon asked, his voice flat.
Selene’s lips pressed into a thin line.
"The Crimson Eclipse Sect."
Damon filed the name away.
"They are a minor sect from the western borderlands," Selene continued.
"They have no reputation, no history, and no standing. They exist solely as a front for the Eclipse Cult."
Damon’s eyes flicked to Lumina.
She had gone pale beneath her disguise.
’The Eclipse Cult.’
"They let him join?" Damon asked.
"It is allowed," Selene said, her voice carrying a note of disgust.
"The tournament rules do not restrict which sect a participant represents. Only their age and cultivation."
"But he was Azure Dragon."
"Was," Selene emphasized. "After your duel, his family pulled him from the sect. They renounced his affiliation. He is no longer bound to us."
Damon processed that.
"So he can just switch sides?"
"He can. But it comes at a cost."
Selene’s eyes hardened.
"By abandoning the Azure Dragon Sect and joining a rival faction, he has branded himself a traitor. The sect will never acknowledge him again. His reputation is ruined. His connections are severed. He has burned every bridge he ever built."
She paused.
"And if he dies on that stage, no one will mourn him."
Damon looked back at Kai.
The man had not moved. He stood there, a statue of flesh and stolen power, his empty eyes fixed on Damon with unwavering focus.
Damon realized.
He does not care about reputation.
He does not care about the future.
He only cares about killing me.
"Can the tournament committee disqualify him?" Damon asked.
"For using demonic arts?"
Selene shook her head.
"Proving it is the problem. Demonic arts leave traces, but they can be hidden. The Crimson Eclipse Sect will claim he is using a rare bloodline technique. Without irrefutable evidence, the committee will not intervene."
Damon nodded slowly.
’So that is how it is.’
He turned away from Kai and faced his group.
Ariel watched him with concern. Mio and Mia had their hands on their weapons.
Seraphina’s eyes glowed with azure light.
Flare’s fists crackled with suppressed flame. Alena had already started mixing something in a small vial.
They were ready.
They were always ready.
"Do not engage him before the tournament," Damon said.
"But if we face him on the stage..."
He let the sentence hang.
The implication was clear.
’Then I will end him.’
Selene stepped closer.
"There is something else you should know."
Damon raised an eyebrow.
"The Eclipse Cult did not just recruit Kai. They are fielding a full team. Seven participants."
She paused.
"All of them are King Spirit Realm."
The words landed like a hammer.
Damon’s mind raced.
’Seven King Spirit Realm cultivators.’
Against his team of Heavenly Spirit Realm fighters.
The gap was enormous.
But Damon had faced worse odds before.
He had the Chaos Devourer. He had the Incubus Dragon Lord bloodline. He had techniques that no one in this world had ever seen.
And he had his women.
’We will find a way.’
He looked at Kai one last time.
