Chapter 158: Start of the Festival: Behind the Shadows

"So, can you do it?"

"Can I do it?"

Two figures talk as they watch among the shades of darkness, taking a look at the bright festivities in the not too far distance, their eyes, locked onto the student, young people bearing smiles without a care in the world at all.

Silence falls as the two of them wait for each other's move.

And eventually, the silence was broken as the figure the question is addressed to begins to laugh his heart out, to the point that he begins curling forward as he held his stomach, unable to stop himself.

His companion just stood there, confused, wondering why he started an outburst like that, only for him to find out the reason right after.

A straight hit in the face, causing him to tumble for a moment before he was snapped back into being once more.

"CAN I DO IT??!!"

And as soon as he paid attention to the other figure, said figure is already in front, holding his collar with both hands, eyes red and teeth grinding from wrath, expression shifting, unbefitting of the noble image of a mage.

"THAT TRICK OF YOURS NEARLY GOT ME CAUGHT AS WELL!!!"

The figure being questioned starts shouting in a mix of anger and frustration, his arms trembling as he lifts the other figure upwards, speaking volume of the intense instability his emotions currently is.

"W-we never expected something like that to happen as well…"

"So, you're blaming our side!!??"

"T-that, n-no, we're not."

As the other figure folds under his pressure, the one who seems to be more familiar with the inner workings of the academy sighs as he let the other person go as after all, when it all boils down to the most basic of things, they are still part of the same power.

"And you did not even manage to bring a bit of information about the bastard who screwed over our plans…" he then sighs as he shakes his head, once again watching the students in the distance enjoying themselves with the festival.

"Whoever that person is, they moved too fast, and they took down nearly every single one of the spies we sent during the surprise exam…"

"I see… prepare contingencies for that individual, preferably expect more than what the information about them told us about…"

"Then this plan—"

"There won't be any plan for now. That's final, one of the vice headmasters are already on my tail, and if I push it even just a little bit, it won't be just one of the two, but perhaps the headmaster as well will strike me down."

Unable to push the figure knowledgeable with the academy as it appears that they won't follow any plan that came from his own group anymore, at least, for now, the other figure silently clicked his tongue in disappointment as he took a step back, fading into the shadows.

It was as if he was never there at all.

Meanwhile, the figure left behind all on his lonesome moved not in a subtle yet flashy way like that, instead, he opted to come out normally, from the back alley as if he just did something normal there before he eventually melds into the crowd.

"Fresh Firesalt Roast Fish for sale!! Come check it out!!"

"Hey hey, just one shot per person, pay up if you want to try more!!"

"Come on come on, give me just one!!"

"Agghh!! It broke again!!"

The lively atmosphere paired with the warm morning sun shone upon everyone and revealed the staff uniform the figure is wearing, his senses still on high alert despite already joining the populace, a feeling of being watched always dawning upon him.

It was as if despite the extremely advanced concealing artifact issued to each one of them, there is still someone capable of detecting him in this academy where even a vice headmaster fails to see through him.

"Hey, come on now, let's check that place out!!"

"Alright, kids, let's enjoy ourselves today!! HAHAHA!!!"

While the academy staff continues on his way, he finds himself more distracted as more individual start populating the place, the mix of each and every single voice around the area making even he himself, a veteran mage, feel a bit lost amidst the lively chaos.

That is exactly the reason why even when the main perpetrators for their previous plan's failure already walked pass him, he didn't even recognize them at all.

Of course, given how little his group's information are regarding the people who foiled their plan to harvest students who possess unique magic, he wouldn't even realize that the perpetrator is in front of him even if they are already standing there for a long time.

"Hehe~~ this is fun~~"

Walking down the now changed roads of the academy proper, Medea giggled to herself as he leads Novus across the crowd, her hand holding his in a firm, tight manner as if she never wants to let him go, a sweet smile on her face as the two of them starts exploring the place.

In their normal, day to day lives, the academy is already a lively place that only calms down during the dead of the night, yet right now, even when the sun just rose up above the horizon minutes ago, the place is already full of life, thriving, as if it changed from a place of study to a place of enjoyment overnight.

Either side of the roads are filled with stalls of all kinds, ones selling food, ones providing entertainment, ones presenting challenging games that will test the limit of a student's skill, and even some peculiar ones that other students doesn't seem to be too eager to try out.

"Are we just going to roam around this morning?"

As the two of them slows their pace down, Novus couldn't help but ask, earning a smiling nod from the lady pretty much dragging him all around the academy.

Surprisingly, despite the numerous students roaming around at the same time as them, the eyes shooting them all sorts of gazes are fewer than usual, as if the festive atmosphere helps them really well to blend themselves in.

Of course, that doesn't mean that they aren't getting a lot of attention for themselves, eyes of envy and jealousy being directed to the young man, and should those gazes be one that can stab and kill, he would've stabbed, just stabbed, not killed, dozens of times over already.

"Mn, the alchemy contest will start later in the afternoon, that will go on for all the way until tomorrow, after that… well, that's the only thing we have scheduled…"

The lady explained, pausing as she realized that watching the alchemy competition to find someone that can meet the requirements, he previously mentioned being the only thing they planned.

Eventually, a question she finds herself extremely worried with causes her to outright blurt said question out without any single sign of thinking in her part.

"What, you don't want to hang out with this big sister~~?"

It has been a while since she last addressed herself like so in front of this junior, hence the reason why the Sword Princess couldn't help but feel a bit of warmth rushing through her face as those words escaped from her lips.

Still, she bears with the embarrassment as she awaits his answer.

No words were said, only a smile and a shake of his head, causing the smile on her face to grow wider as she starts dragging him around once more.
