Chapter 198: Betrayal
Though the orc was fast, Ariana didn’t seem to be weak either. She followed the orc’s movement and unleashed another bolt of lightning.
Zappp!
The bolt of lightning shot forward and struck the orc instantly.
But strangely...
Instead of being blasted away like before, the orc was only forced to stop in its tracks. Its body began to swell, growing slightly larger as an even more terrifying aura erupted from it. The orc moved again, vanishing from its place. Not just size, even its speed had increased dramatically.
Whoooosh!
In the blink of an eye, the orc closed the distance and swung its massive cleaver.
However, multiple radiant magic circles materialized before Ariana, layering one over another like overlapping shields.
Creak!
Creak!
Creak!
One magic circle after another shattered like fragile glass. But they bought Ariana enough time. She leaped backward and immediately unleashed another bolt of lightning.
This time, the attack was far more powerful. The surrounding space distorted ever so slightly as the dazzling bolt tore through the air before crashing into the orc.
Booooom!
A deafening explosion erupted, sending a violent shockwave across the village.
Many of the onlookers were blown off their feet by the impact. Thick smoke engulfed the battlefield.
Ariana stood in the distance, her eyes fixed on the spot where the orc had been.
Gradually, the smoke began to clear.
A much larger figure slowly emerged from within.
The orc had grown even bigger than before, and the overwhelming aura radiating from its body made everyone struggle to breathe.
Ariana’s eyes narrowed. ’It’s absorbing my attacks to grow stronger. That’s Elizabeth’s ability. So she really used her blood to concoct that pill, leaving me with no chance of winning... Even so, there’s no way I’m going back. Otherwise, I’ll become nothing more than a killer like the rest of them.’
She slowly raised her hand once more. "You think that ability makes you invincible?" she said coldly. "Then let me show you... what the God of Light’s blessing is truly capable of."
Another radiant magic circle appeared before her palm, humming as it rapidly gathered mana.
But she didn’t stop there.
A second magic circle appeared before the first one.
Then a third.
A fourth.
A fifth.
Finally, a sixth.
Six glowing formations floated one behind another, each overflowing with terrifying amounts of mana.
The smile on the orc’s face instantly disappeared, replaced by sheer terror. "If you unleash that much mana, this entire place will be reduced to ashes!" the orc shouted. "Is that how you intend to repay the people who gave you a place to live?"
Ariana’s resolve wavered for the briefest moment at those words.
That single instant of hesitation was all the orc needed.
Whoooosh!
The massive creature vanished from where it stood.
Ariana reacted immediately.
She spun around, already knowing where the orc would appear.
But its enhanced strength and speed had made it just a little faster than her.
The orc materialized directly before her.
Smack!
A vicious backhand sent Ariana hurtling through the air as blood sprayed from her mouth.
Meanwhile, back at the forest, Logan had been waiting for quite some time, yet not a single monster had emerged. The forest remained eerily silent, which could only mean one thing.
The others hadn’t encountered any monsters either.
Suddenly, a bad premonition crossed his mind. ’What if the monsters had already left for the village while we were waiting here?’
Without wasting another second, Logan sprinted toward the village chief’s position. Thanks to his speed, he arrived in just three minutes.
"Mr. Dunkel!" Logan called out. "None of us have encountered any monsters. What if they were never here to begin with? What if they’re already wreaking havoc in the village?"
"That..." Mr. Dunkel fell silent. Logan’s words made perfect sense. To be honest, he had also been feeling that something was wrong.
Because...
He still hadn’t seen the two experts from the capital. If they hadn’t found the green orc, they should’ve returned by now. Yet more than thirty minutes had already passed, and there wasn’t the slightest sign of either of them.
"Logan," Mr. Dunkel said with a grave expression, "take ten men and return to the village. If our worst fears have come true, send one man back to inform us immediately. We’ll head back as well."
Logan nodded.
Without delay, he gathered ten men from the surrounding positions. The group hurried out of the forest, mounted their horses, and galloped toward the village at full speed.
"What’s going on?" Nadeem asked as he rode beside Logan.
"I hope we’re wrong," Logan replied with a gloomy expression. "But... I think the monsters may have attacked the village while we were away."
For some reason, an overwhelming sense of unease gripped his heart.
The others’ expressions darkened as well.
Everyone urged their horses to move even faster.
Before long, they reached the outskirts of the village. The sight before them filled them with rage and despair. The village really was under attack.
Jackals rampaged through the streets, slaughtering anyone they encountered.
There was almost no one left to stop them.
Nearly every capable villager had gone into the forest to hunt the monsters...
Yet the monsters had come here instead.
Logan immediately signaled one of the men.
"Go! Inform Mr. Dunkel!"
The man instantly turned his horse around, preparing to ride back.
Suddenly...
Something sharp whistled through the air.
Schlk!
A lance pierced straight through the man’s heart. His body fell lifelessly from the horse.
Two figures slowly stepped out from the shadows. They were none other than the two experts from the capital. The very same people who were supposed to be inside the forest searching for the green orc.
Logan’s face darkened. "You..." he growled. "You two were working together with the monsters all along, weren’t you?"
"So what if we were?" one of the men replied mockingly. A sword was strapped across his back as a sneer spread across his face. "What exactly are you going to do about it?"
"Oh, wait," the other man said, casually resting his lance on his shoulder. "It’s her husband."
