Chapter 306: Fight to Death (2)
The three shallow lines across Kane’s chest welled bright and immediate.
He didn’t step back. He stepped in.
Controlled Rage surged to the absolute ceiling of the framework, [ninety-two percent] for a four-second window he could not afford to waste.
Kane drove his forehead into the exact point where Grathak’s jaw met densified neck muscle, once, twice, a third time until black-tinged blood sprayed from the emperor’s mouth.
"YOU-"
Grathak’s clinch broke.
Kane dropped, seized one massive wrist, and twisted with every remaining scrap of torque the system could feed him.
Something in the densified joint ground and popped.
Grathak’s roar this time carried real, surprised pain.
The emperor answered by simply falling forward, using his full weight like a collapsing wall.
Kane took the impact across both shoulders and went down hard.
The back of his skull cracked against stone.
Stars detonated behind his eyes.
Grathak’s knee smashed toward his face.
Kane turned just enough that the blow crushed into the packed earth beside his head instead, spraying dirt and chips of rock.
He rammed an upward elbow into the already-damaged left rib line with everything he had left in the burst.
The wet crack was louder this time. Grathak’s pitch-black eyes flared.
"You keep finding that rib," the emperor snarled, blood running from his mouth in a thick line.
"It will not stay broken."
Kane rolled, came up on refusal, and spat a mouthful of red mixed with grit.
"Then... I break it again."
They collided in the center of the floor like two avalanches meeting.
Grathak’s densified forearm caught Kane across the upper chest and lifted him clean off his feet before slamming him down.
BAM!
The arena floor spider-webbed.
Kane’s breath left in a single explosive rush.
Before he could draw another, Grathak’s hand closed around his throat and hauled him upright, dangling, feet clear of the stone.
The emperor’s other fist drew back for a finishing punch that would have caved a lesser skull.
Kane jammed both thumbs into the damage around Grathak’s left eye cluster, the same wounds the Guardian’s fragment had left, and twisted.
Black fluid and blood burst.
Grathak howled and released.
Kane dropped, landed hard, and immediately drove a rising knee into the emperor’s groin with the last of the ninety-two percent output.
Even densified flesh had limits.
Grathak folded a fraction.
Kane used it to leap, wrap both legs around the thick torso, and rain short, vicious elbows into the side of the neck and the damaged eye socket.
The crowd noise had become a single continuous animal scream.
Pure-blood voices demanded the human’s spine.
Southern sections stayed deathly focused, already measuring distances to the exits and the staged corridors.
Grathak reached up, seized Kane by the hair and one shoulder, and tore him free with raw power.
"GAAAAHH!"
He swung the smaller body like a flail and released.
Kane flew ten meters, hit the wall hard enough to leave a full-body crater, and slid down in a heap of blood and dust.
Crack.
Something in his left shoulder ground wrong.
The system’s warnings stacked in harsh red at the edge of his vision, but he forced them aside and stood.
Blood ran freely from the temple, the chest lines, the reopened forearm, and a new cut along his hairline.
Grathak stalked forward, one eye swollen nearly shut, left arm held a fraction tighter against the damaged ribs, black blood dripping from his mouth and the ruined eye cluster.
The densification was still working; Kane could see the rib line already trying to knit—but it was no longer effortless.
"You should have taken the place I offered. Now I am going to pull your arms off and show the packs what happens to variables that forget their size."
Kane wiped blood from his eyes with the heel of his hand and settled his weight on the leg that still felt solid.
"Then stop talking and do it."
Grathak charged.
No more testing. N
The emperor came in a straight, murderous line of densified mass and pitch-black focus.
Kane waited until the last possible fraction of a second, dropped under the reaching arms, and drove both fists into the same left rib juncture with a short-burst Rage spike that made the system scream warnings about tissue overload.
The rib gave completely this time with a final sound.
Grathak’s entire left side shuddered.
Kane did not stop.
He climbed the larger body like a man scaling a cliff in a storm, one forearm hooked around the neck, the other raining hammer-fists into the damaged eye and the temple until Grathak’s balance broke again.
They hit the stone together in a thrashing tangle of limbs and blood.
Grathak’s remaining good eye burned with pure killing intent.
His densified hand found Kane’s already-compromised left shoulder and squeezed.
Bone ground.
Kane’s vision went white at the edges.
He answered by biting into the emperor’s ear and tearing.
Hot blood filled his mouth.
Grathak roared and slammed Kane’s head against the floor once, twice.
Cracks spread.
Kane’s grip loosened. Grathak threw him off and rose, chest heaving, left arm now clearly protecting the ruined ribs, one eye a ruined mess of black fluid and swollen flesh.
Kane rolled onto his side, then his knees, then, slowly, stubbornly, his feet.
Blood sheeted down the left side of his face. The shoulder hung wrong. Every breath pulled wet and sharp across the chest lines and the deeper bruises.
He spat another mouthful of red and grinned through it, teeth stained.
"Let’s end this."
Grathak’s remaining eye narrowed.
The densified bulk shifted, weight settling onto the side that still worked cleanly.
The emperor’s voice came lower, almost quiet under the continuous roar of the tiers.
"You are breaking yourself to break me. The essence will finish knitting what you have damaged. Your body will not."
Kane limped one step forward, then another, closing the distance again on pure refusal.
"Then I break more of you before it finishes."
They launched into the next exchange under a sky that had begun to take on the first hard gold of late morning.
BOOM!
Fists, knees, foreheads, elbows, teeth, no weapons, no distance, only the raw, escalating arithmetic of two creatures determined to be the one still upright when the other finally could not rise.
The floor was slick with mixed blood and black fluid.
Neither had yielded the center.
