Chapter 305: Fight to Death (1)
Morning arrived with the rolling sound of horns.
Not the single call of a routine changeover.
Multiple tusks and war-horns from the outer posts and the high walls, the layered signal that the empire itself was being summoned to witness.
Kane opened his eyes to grey light and the distant, growing thunder of gathering banners.
Kessa was already awake, striped tail still, listening.
Griselda stood at the window, wings folded, yellow eyes on the movement below.
Kane rose, dressed in simple trousers and an open shirt that would not survive the first exchange, and left Mjoldr against the wall.
No weapons.
The rule had been spoken in council and accepted by the throne.
He would walk into the upper arena the same way he had walked into the first underground confrontation, empty-handed, and unwilling to stay down.
Outside, the capital was filling.
Beast warriors from every major banner still inside the walls streamed toward the upper arena.
Pure-blood retainers took the high terraces.
Southern and river-aligned clusters held lower sections closer to the exits, already positioned for whatever followed the result.
The horns continued, low and insistent, until the entire fighting floor and every surrounding rail stood packed under the rising sun.
Sunset had been the stated time.
The empire had begun gathering at dawn.
Kane walked down the final corridor shirtless.
Griselda’s last spell still lingered under his skin, a thin, cool layer of reinforced tissue and muted pain that would not last the full fight but might buy him the first critical exchanges.
Muscle shifted cleanly with every step.
The cuts from training had closed enough to stop seeping.
He flexed once as he stepped into the open mouth of the upper arena and felt every watching pair of eyes track the movement.
The place was a true colosseum.
Tiered stone rose on all sides, already packed with thousands.
Pure-blood banners dominated the higher rails.
Southern and river clusters held lower sections nearer the exits.
Warriors, war-chiefs, attendants, and every major voice still inside the capital filled the remaining space until the air itself felt heavy with breath and expectation.
Most of them had come to watch a human get ripped apart.
Kane smiled without humor and walked to the center of the dark-stone floor empty-handed, turning slowly so the entire bowl could see he carried nothing.
A few minutes later, the opposite archway opened.
Grathak entered to a rolling wave of sound.
Hands reached from the lower rails to graze his arms, his sides, the muscle of his shoulders as if contact alone conferred something.
He had always been massive.
This morning the densification looked tighter, denser, the dark fur stretched over muscle that seemed carved from something harder than ordinary flesh.
Pitch-black eyes swept the arena and locked on Kane.
Marisa walked beside him in a simple dark wrap, amber gaze fixed on the barbarian and never once rising to the crowd.
Grathak stopped at the edge of the floor, raised both arms, and let out a single earth-shaking roar that crushed every other noise into silence.
"..."
Then he crouched and launched.
BOOM!
Fifty meters vanished in one leap.
He landed so close the stone cracked under his weight, towering over Kane, breath hot and thick with the scent of refined essence.
"You sure you want to do this, barbarian?" Grathak’s voice carried without effort.
"I can still give you a place in my empire. You are strong. Work below me."
Kane looked up at the pitch-black eyes and the tightened bulk.
"I don’t work below."
They moved at the same instant.
"Hmm."
Swoosh.
Both fists met in the space between them with a shockwave that rippled dust from the nearest tiers and forced the front rows back a step.
BAM!
The impact traveled up Kane’s arm like a struck anvil.
Grathak’s forehead smashed forward immediately after, catching Kane high on the temple and sending him skidding sideways across the stone.
The emperor followed without pause, one massive leg driving a kick that landed square in Kane’s ribs and launched him into the arena wall hard enough to spider-web the masonry.
Pain flared through his body.
The system’s suppressors bit down hard.
Kane hit the ground, rolled, and caught the follow-up stomp by the ankle with both hands.
He twisted and heaved with everything the Controlled Rage could give at ninety percent for a three-second burst.
Grathak’s densified mass left the ground for a fraction of a second, enough for Kane to slam him down onto his back and drop onto the larger chest, fists already hammering.
The first punch split skin over Grathak’s cheekbone.
The second landed on the throat and bounced off densified cartilage.
The third drove toward the damage line under the left eye cluster from the Guardian fight.
Grathak’s roar shook the floor.
One enormous hand clamped around Kane’s ribs and flung him off like a rag.
Kane hit, slid, and came up on pure stubbornness.
Blood ran from his temple and the reopened cut on his forearm.
Grathak rose with terrifying speed for something so large, pitch-black eyes flat with the kind of focus that no longer cared about entertainment.
"You still stand after that." Grathak rolled one shoulder; the densified muscle flexed like cable.
"Keep surprising me."
Kane spat red onto the stone and settled his weight.
"I’m not most things."
They closed again.
Grathak’s reach was absurd.
Kane slipped the first sweeping arm by a finger’s width, drove a short knee toward the inner thigh, and felt the impact land on densified meat that barely gave.
A backhand caught him across the shoulder and spun him.
He used the spin, dropped low, and hammered an elbow into the same left-side rib juncture the system had flagged from the underground exchange.
Something gave with a wet, muffled crack.
Grathak’s breath hitched for the first time.
The emperor answered by simply walking through Kane’s next strike and wrapping both arms around him in a crushing clinch.
"Gah!"
Ribs ground.
Air vanished.
Kane’s vision tunneled.
He head-butted upward into the underside of Grathak’s jaw, once, twice, until the grip loosened enough to drop and twist free.
A clawed hand raked across his chest, opening three shallow lines that immediately welled with blood.
