Chapter 300: Last Quiet Night
"I need to feel how the suppressors hold when I’m already bleeding and still have to finish the stroke."
Kane flexed the hand; the cut pulled and seeped.
"Better to learn it here than in the chamber when his hand is already around my neck."
She watched him for a long moment, amber eyes unreadable.
"The southern voices are still waiting for a clearer commitment from you before they will pre-position. If you want corridor control the hour he falls, you will have to give Vorra’s people something more concrete than general alignment before tomorrow night."
"I’ll give it to them tomorrow."
Kane lifted Mjoldr again, the weight familiar and clean.
"Today I finish the angles. Two nights from now I use them. Be ready."
Marisa held his stare, then gave a single short nod.
"Two nights. Do not arrive at that chamber already half-spent from testing your own limits. The essence in his blood will not care how thoroughly you catalogued your pain tolerance."
Soon enough, the night fell on Berakamon.
Kane returned to the secondary grounds after full dark.
Primary approach: the private logistics meeting in two nights.
Upper chamber, low ceiling, single inward-opening door.
Enter looking like a man who had accepted every term.
Let Grathak speak first.
When the emperor turned or reached for documents, any moment the densified bulk committed weight in the wrong direction, commit fully.
Controlled Rage at ninety percent for the decisive three-to-five-second window.
Throat if the head was high, heart-line if the arms were wide, residual eye damage from the Guardian fight if nothing else offered.
Three strikes of the haft on the outer wall, door left open. Marisa moved the same hour.
Secondary: if the private meeting was delayed, cancelled, or walked into a trap, force a public challenge the next time Grathak stood in the main hall with enough banners watching. Insult or direct contradiction of the essence works in language the packs could not ignore.
Make refusal look like weakness.
The fight would be harder in the open, but the southern and river voices already leaning toward him would have to choose in front of witnesses.
Tertiary: Vorra-backed containment. Southern and river-aligned warriors pre-positioned on the critical corridors, and the main hall approaches the hour the body dropped.
Their task was not to fight a civil war; it was to hold the junctions long enough for Marisa’s succession claim to take root and for the pragmatic deeper packs to decide the center still held.
Pure-blood hardliners would move. They had to be slowed, not necessarily destroyed, until the new reality settled.
Kane opened his eyes.
The plan was complete.
No more branches that mattered.
He throttled Controlled Berserker Output to eighty-five percent and began shadow-sparring the essence-enhanced version of Grathak under the moon.
Larger reach.
Faster recovery.
Pain resistance that would let the emperor ignore damage that should have folded him.
Kane feinted high, dropped, drove the imagined spike toward the throat, reset, and did it again.
The system fed micro-adaptations in quiet blue text between sequences, fractional adjustments to hip torque, a half-step earlier commitment on the reverse spike, a cleaner line for the upward heart thrust when the left arm was already compromised.
He ran the primary killing sequence until the moon had moved a full hand-span across the sky.
Only then did he let the Rage drop, retrieve his shirt, and walk back toward the guest quarters.
The cuts on his arm had reopened further. Blood tracked down his wrist in thin dark lines.
He left them.
Kessa and Griselda were both awake when he entered.
The lamp was low. Kessa sat on the edge of the bed, striped tail moving in short, restless arcs.
Griselda stood near the window again, wings folded, yellow eyes already on the blood and the residual steam still rising from his skin.
Neither spoke until he closed the door and set Mjoldr against the wall.
Kane looked at them both and decided the quiet phase had lasted long enough.
"Grathak dies within days," he said.
"The underground experiments end with him. The succession will be messy. Pure-bloods will try to fill the hole with steel. Southern and river banners will hold the corridors long enough for Marisa to take the center. After that, we point whatever is left of this empire outward and stop bleeding time we do not have."
Silence held for a full breath.
Kessa’s ears had gone flat. Her voice came low and sharp.
"You’re telling us this now. After days of coming back and shutting every question down."
"I’m telling you now because the next moves leave the private circle. Once Vorra’s people are locked in and the private meeting is set, there is no clean way to keep it from you without putting both of you at risk."
Kane leaned against the table, arms loose, the open cuts still seeping.
"I need you ready, not surprised."
Kessa stood.
The possessive heat in her posture was immediate, but underneath it something fiercer and cleaner moved.
"You’re going to kill the emperor of Berakamon inside his own palace, and you want me ready. Fine. I’m ready. But if you die in that chamber, I will burn the succession, the southern banners, and Marisa’s visions on the way out. Clear?"
"Clear."
Griselda’s voice was quieter, already practical.
"Exit routes from the upper levels if the pure-bloods move faster than expected. Containment on the underground access so no one finishes or destroys the essence work before we can shut it down. I will map both tonight. Signal method?"
"Three strikes of the haft on the outer wall of the private chamber. Door left open. Marisa moves the same hour. You two do not enter that room unless the signal fails and the corridor is already blood." Kane met her yellow eyes. "If I am still inside and silent, assume the densification was higher than projected and act accordingly."
Griselda inclined her head once.
"Understood."
Kessa closed the remaining distance, reached up, and gripped the front of his shirt hard enough to pull him down a fraction.
Her forehead pressed against his for a moment, striped hair brushing his jaw.
