Chapter 299: Cold Calculation
Kane didn’t return to the guest quarters for more than a change of clothes and a skin of water.
By the time the sun stood clear of the outer walls, he was already back on the secondary grounds.
The walls here were high enough to block casual sight lines.
The packed earth still held the marks of his morning forms.
He stripped to the waist again, set Mjoldr point-down in the soil, and began the real work of the day.
The first sequence was opening creation.
He moved against an imaginary target the size and reach of Grathak, ten feet of densified mass, arms that could cover distance in a single step.
Feint high with the axe head, draw the guard upward, then reverse the weapon in a tight arc so the reverse spike drove toward the throat.
He ran it at half speed first, then three-quarters, then at full combat tempo with Controlled Berserker Output throttled to a clean eighty percent for the final three strides of each repetition.
The spike had to land before the larger opponent could reset. Any hesitation and the mass advantage closed the window.
Sweat came quickly.
Steam rose again in the morning air.
Between sets, he stood still, eyes half-closed, and rebuilt the private audience chamber in his mind from every fragment Marisa had given him and every detail he had taken in during earlier passages through the upper levels.
Low ceiling relative to Grathak’s height.
Single heavy table scaled for the emperor.
Two chairs, one of them far larger.
Door that opened inward.
No secondary exit.
Guard station twelve paces down the corridor, two warriors on standard rotation, change-over at the third and ninth bells.
The signal for Marisa had to be simple enough to give while injured and unmistakable enough that she would move the succession the same hour: three short strikes of Mjoldr’s haft against the outer wall of the chamber, followed by the door left open. Anything else risked confusion in the first chaotic minutes.
He opened his eyes and ran the throat-line sequence again.
Eighty-five percent Controlled Rage this time.
The burst was short, six seconds of elevated output, no more, because the plan allowed no prolonged exchange.
Land the killing stroke or create the opening for it inside the first half-minute.
After that, the essence-enhanced recovery would begin to erase whatever damage he managed to inflict.
The system window flickered at the edge of his vision, quiet and precise.
[Controlled Berserker Output: 85 % – Sustained 5.8 seconds]
[Torque efficiency on reverse-spike transition: +4 % versus morning baseline]
[Pain suppressors: Active]
[Minor tissue stress accumulating in left forearm and lateral ribs]
Kane dismissed it and shifted to the next line: spine.
A heavier opponent preferred to loom and press.
The counter was to drop low under the first reaching arm, drive forward, and put the full weight of the axe into the lower thoracic junction where densification still left a vulnerability under the ribs.
He drilled the drop-and-drive until the movement lived in his body without conscious thought.
Each repetition ended with the imagined wet crunch of the blade finding bone and the immediate follow-up that would keep the target from simply healing through it.
Midday came and went.
Guard rotations occupied the next block of planning.
Standard palace pattern for private upper chambers put two warriors at the corridor junction and a third roving every quarter-bell.
Pure-blood leanings were stronger among the night rotations; southern-aligned and neutral warriors appeared more often on the day marks.
If the private meeting occurred after the evening meal, the higher probability was pure-blood eyes on the door.
That meant the signal to Marisa had to travel through a secondary path, one of the southern-leaning attendants she had already quietly positioned, or the kill had to be finished fast enough that the corridor guards became irrelevant before they could raise a wider alarm.
Kane moved to heart-line work.
Frontal commitment against superior mass was suicide unless the opponent’s arms were already occupied.
The sequence therefore began with a deliberate sacrifice angle: offer the left side, accept a glancing or even solid hit if necessary, and use the resulting close distance to drive Mjoldr’s spike upward beneath the sternum.
He ran it at ninety percent Controlled Rage for the final step and the thrust.
The burst lasted only four seconds.
Pain from the reopened forearm cut flared bright and was catalogued, not avoided.
He needed to know exactly how much the system’s suppressors could buy him when real damage landed in the middle of a lethal exchange.
[Tissue integrity – left forearm: minor laceration reopened]
[Pain management under 90 % output: within acceptable combat parameters]
[Recovery projection after session: 6–8 hours to baseline with rest]
Late afternoon light was slanting across the walls when soft footsteps approached the open arch of the secondary grounds.
Kane did not turn until he had finished the current repetition and let the Controlled Rage drop back to zero.
Marisa stood in the archway, dark wrap neat, long black hair tied back for once.
Amber eyes moved over the sweat, the blood, the axe still loose in his grip, and the cracked surface of the heavy post he had been using as a stand-in target.
"You’re pushing past the body’s comfortable limits," she said.
"I need to know where they actually are."
Kane set Mjoldr’s head against the earth and reached for the water skin.
"Two nights. Confirm it."
"Two nights."
Marisa stepped fully into the circle, stopping a few paces from him.
The air between them still carried the memory of the previous night’s encounter against the post, but neither mentioned it.
"He requested the private logistics meeting himself. After the evening meal, upper chamber, the same one I described. He believes the family condition and the trade routes have settled the outsider question. He wants final numbers on staging and route protection before the deeper packs fully commit their own forces."
Kane drank, wiped his mouth with the back of a blood-streaked wrist, and met her eyes.
"Essence dose?"
"I cannot see the exact timing. The visions only show that he has taken at least one measured injection since the underground discovery. Possibly two. He will not walk into a private room with you at a disadvantage he can avoid."
"Then I assume the higher densification range and end it before recovery becomes the deciding factor."
Kane planted the water skin on the post and rolled his damaged forearm, testing the fresh pain.
"Signal remains the same. Three strikes, door open. You move the same hour. No speeches, no waiting for the pure-bloods to organize a narrative."
Marisa’s gaze flicked to the thin lines of blood still welling from his forearm and knuckle.
"You’re reopening wounds on purpose."
