Chapter 154 Babysitting
"A guy brought this hours ago, saying it’s your schoolbag. Is it yours?"
I reacted by collecting the bag from her before she could finish speaking. It’s the hello kitty design bag that Rex had gotten me for my birthday.
My mind unwittingly goes back to what Calix had said about him. No wonder he didn’t respond to my calls and texts or show up today. The tears return to prick my eyes, it was too much to hold back in this time.
It just would have been better if he hadn’t walked into my life like a savior only to disappear all of a sudden.
What good is there in being helped out from a pit only to be thrown right back in properly.
"Wait, let me balance up the ledgers and we can leave together since we are the only ones left here anyway." I glance at her questionably when her words register and asked her what time it is, and she answers, "It’s 5pm."
That dazed me momentarily, did I hear her right? "What?"
"Yeah. You were out for nearly two hours. Everyone else has long gone home. You’re the reason I stayed behind."
"Oh my God! Percy!!!" I screamed.
CALIX
The problematic baby laughs almost crazily again as I throw the tennis ball and catch it. I sigh for the umpteenth time. I don’t know how long exactly I have been doing this for. My arm is tired from the continuous throwing, I’m so tired myself but this little demon did not fall asleep like I was hoping he would. He might start crying again if I stop this ball play as he finds it an entertaining and interesting thing.
I was in my room packing up a small suitcase after a much heated argument with Dom in which he had called me out on what I did to Gweneth and told me to think about how I would have felt if someone had done that to my sister or girlfriend.
I unwittingly did so and it wasn’t great. But I’m not sorry at all about what I did to Gweneth. I let him know that. Now he thinks that I’m a psychopath. He is pretty wounded about it because he thought that I had romantic feelings for Gweneth and wanted to get her from Rex for that reason.
I gladly cleared his misunderstandings and also let him be aware that the reason I wanted to win her by all means was so I could break her.
He said he regretted ever helping me. Fortunately the others weren’t in when the argument ensued between us. But knowing Dom, he might spill to Rex and the others since he is feeling guilty. But whether he does that or not doesn’t matter. Gweneth would still be mine.
She would have no place in that school anymore if she can’t be.
I was busy getting a little of my things together for my flight, intending to head to the gym right after to waste the remaining hours away punching a sandbag when I received a call from the owner of the daycare asking me to come help her out.
She had sounded so desperate. I really didn’t want to come but had to force myself because the owner, Ms Tilda is too much of a nice person. Too nice for her own good if I’m being honest.
She was never cranky to me back when I used to volunteer at her daycare center. Too caring too. She and I always got along.
So much that I kinda started to see her as a mother or aunt figure. This place was a madhouse when I arrived because of this baby’s cries alone.
He has a very loud and crazy crying fits. I really am tired of this. I never thought I would step foot in this daycare ever again. I had volunteered here for a whole month because of a bet that I lost between me and Lucas early last year. I don’t even remember what the stupid bet was all about. It felt like nothing at the time because I didn’t think I would lose. But surprisingly, I lost and had to come here to volunteer as a result even though it didn’t matter for me whether I did it or not. I did not need public sentiment orientation to add to boost any shitty image credibility.
The month I spent here was the worse in my entire life. It is here that I discovered that there is a sound louder than that of a bomb exploding. Babies they are, but I call them little demons.
Some of the hardest killing missions I have been on were not as difficult as dealing with them. Even though I hated it, I had to admit that it was alot better than volunteering at elderly homes and having to deal with cranky elderlies.
Some babies get irritated easily and are very temperamental. When that happens, I’ll have to frantically figure out ways to deal with their cries. Most of them involving doing stupid, ridiculous impressions and dancing. Then I would get their toothless grins and giggles as a reward.
Some would even clap their tiny hands together. Their cute faces would make me smile before I realized that I was smiling. Then Ms Tilda would tease me saying I would be a great Dad in the future. And I would always reply, "Stop it." Because it is too early to even think about much less imagine what kind of father I would become.
It’s inevitable. Especially for someone like me. I imagine that my uncle is definitely going to mount pressure on me for that when the time comes.
I found it not so bad before I left. Ms Tilda thought I was really good at it and wanted me to become an employee to which I blatantly refused.
I almost lost my mind during the one month I spent here. Six crazy hours each working days. I would happily be jobless if this happens to be the only job in the world.
Being a babysitter is no joke.
