Coop packed light. Formation-sealed case for the lattice recording equipment. A change of clothes that looked like something a mid-level bureaucrat would wear — grey, forgettable, the kind of fabric that made people’s eyes slide past without registering. Identity papers that Thorne’s network had produced with the craftsmanship of someone who understood that the best forgeries weren’t the ones that looked perfect but the ones that looked exactly imperfect enough to be real.

"Aldric Wen," he read from the papers. "Provincial assessor, Third Administrative District. Arriving for quarterly infrastructure review."

"Boring enough to be invisible," Thorne said. "Nobody questions a provincial assessor. They avoid them."

Coop’s cybernetic eyes flickered — the lattice running a last integrity check on the recording equipment. The Cognitect’s presence operated on cognitive frequencies that spiritual detection couldn’t register. He’d walk through the Imperial Palace’s security formations the way light passed through glass — present but undetected.

"Kael’s contact will meet you at the eastern servants’ gate," Thorne continued. "Clean credentials — the brooch confirms. She’ll escort you to the sealed room. You’ll have approximately three hours before the shift rotation brings the compromised guard captain past that corridor."

"Three hours to transcribe a ritual array that a parasitic intelligence designed to sacrifice a child’s soul." Coop tucked the papers into his coat. "Should be enough. The lattice records at resolutions that would take a human transcriptionist a week."

"And if something goes wrong?"

"Define wrong."

"Compromised officials detect you. The ghost in the lower levels turns out to be in the right corridor at the wrong time. The formation patterns trigger a defensive response when you scan them."

"Then I improvise. I’m eighty-four years old, Thorne. I’ve been improvising since before your parents met."

Raven arrived at the gate as Coop was adjusting his bureaucrat’s coat. The grey fabric made him look smaller — diminished the breadth of shoulders that Mother Doha’s blessing had restored, hid the quiet authority that sixty years of military service had carved into his posture. He looked like a clerk. Which was the point.

"Coop."

"Sect Leader." Formal. The old soldier’s habit of ceremony before deployment.

"The ritual patterns are the key to understanding what the System wanted from the child. If we can reconstruct the mechanism — what the sacrifice was designed to DO, not just that it was designed — we might understand the relationship between the devourer’s plan and the entity’s plan. Where they overlap. Where they diverge."

"And what the child actually represents."

"Yes. The devourer wanted Tianlei. The entity doesn’t. The difference between those two objectives might be visible in the ritual’s architecture. The devourer designed it — whatever is carved into that floor is the devourer’s work, not the entity’s. It’s a window into the original plan."

"Before the passenger took the wheel."
