Chapter 500 - 499: The Right Tea

Chapter 500: Chapter 499: The Right Tea

Location:Seven Peaks — Residential Quarter, Command Center

Date/Time:TC1856.05.03 (Morning to Afternoon)

Kairos made the tea.

Not the wrong kind. Not the lowland variety grabbed in haste from the nearest container. The highland blend. Blue lid. Steeped for exactly the right duration — three minutes, not the two-and-a-half he’d been consistently undershooting or the four he’d over-corrected to twice last week.

Raven came out of her quarters to find two cups on the bench outside her door, still steaming. The highland variety. Properly steeped. The correct temperature.

She picked up her cup. Drank. Set it down.

Picked it up again because the taste was right and that fact meant something she didn’t have a word for yet.

Kairos was sitting on the low wall across the corridor, sword across his knees — he’d started carrying it again after the three days without it, as though even cosmic beings needed the comfort of familiar weight. He watched her drink the tea with the particular attention of someone who had spent five days learning which container had the blue lid and how long three minutes actually lasted when you were counting without dimensional time-perception.

"You got it right," she said.

"I conducted twelve practice attempts over the past four days. Seven were failures. Three were adequate. Two were good. This morning’s batch exceeded all prior results."

"You practiced making tea."

"I practice everything I intend to do correctly. The Formation Hall has a heating element and a water source. The conditions were reproducible. The variable was steeping duration, which I isolated through systematic adjustment."

"You ran experiments on tea."

"I ran experiments on the only thing I can currently offer that you consistently accept." He said it without self-consciousness — the directness of a being who had spent eons processing dimensional frequencies and was now applying the same methodological rigor to a beverage. "The lowland variety was a failure I corrected. The steeping time was a variable I optimized. The temperature was—"

"Kairos."

"Yes."

"Stop explaining. Just drink your tea with me."

He drank. She drank. The corridor was quiet. The formation lights cast amber warmth. Somewhere in the residential quarter, Elian was getting dressed and Aren was freezing his bootlaces again and Bryn was probably already at the guardian tree telling it about her dreams.

"This is good," Kairos said. Looking at the cup. Not talking about the tea.

"Yes," Raven said. Not talking about the tea either.

***

The children noticed.

Not the tea — though Elian commented that Kairos’s cup "smelled right for the first time ever" and Aren observed that the colour was "finally the same as Mama Raven’s" with the clinical precision of a Northern boy who catalogued everything the way his father catalogued ore quality.

What they noticed was the space. Or rather, the absence of it.

Kairos sat beside Raven at breakfast without the careful gap. Walked beside her through the corridors without the measured distance. Stood in briefings close enough that their shoulders occasionally touched, and neither moved away. The choreography of avoidance that had defined their public interactions — the precise maintenance of professional distance, the way both of them had arranged themselves in rooms to be near but never close — had stopped. What replaced it wasn’t performance. It was simply two people who had stopped pretending that the distance was natural.

Bryn noticed before anyone expected. The five-year-old with green eyes and wood Pillar Soul affinity who called Raven "Mama Raven" and slept at the guardian tree’s base. She walked up to Kairos during a garden visit, looked at him with the unfiltered assessment of a child who lived among living things and could feel what was real and what was pretending, and said:

"You feel different."

"Different how?"

"Like the tree when it’s happy. The roots go deeper."

She walked away. Kairos stood in the garden with the expression of a cosmic being who had just been evaluated by a five-year-old and found adequate.
