Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 457 - 456: Branch 7

Location:Seven Peaks — Medicine Hall, Command Center

Date/Time:TC1855.05.21-22

Lin Yue found Raven in the Medicine Hall’s dispensary, where she’d been reviewing the Imperial medical supply integration with Mira. The Alchemy Master carried a formation slate in one hand and a map in the other, and her expression — usually composed behind the professional calm of a woman who’d mastered second-grade pills before most alchemists attempted their first — carried the controlled tension of someone delivering a problem she’d already tried to solve alone.

"We need to talk about Branch 7," she said.

Raven set down the inventory manifest. Mira glanced up from the sorting table, read the room, and went back to work. Some conversations happened around other conversations at Seven Peaks. The trick was knowing which ones needed the full room and which ones needed a corner.

"Cloudrest," Raven said. The name conjured the branch’s geography automatically — 180 kilometers east-northeast, positioned in a rural district that served scattered farming communities across rolling hill country. Branch 7 had been one of the first expansions after the initial Fifth District success. Lira Feng ran it. Had run it for months. The branch that sent warm letters about autumn leaves and modified alchemy formulas calibrated to local water conditions.

"The corruption-exposure zone is ahead of the growth perimeter," Lin Yue said, spreading the map across the dispensary table. Shadow Pavilion markers dotted the eastern region in graduated colors — deep red at the Sanctum core, fading through orange to yellow at the edges. The organic growth line sat at 4.7 kilometers from the Sanctum and expanding. But the corruption markers extended well beyond it.

"Naida’s latest report identifies degraded ley-line signatures in communities thirty kilometers ahead of the visible growth boundary," Lin Yue said. "The organism’s influence extends further than its physical reach. Ley lines that feed Cloudrest’s district are showing the same depletion patterns we documented in the eastern border towns before the shadowspawn appeared."

Raven studied the map. The corruption zone wasn’t a circle — it followed the ley-line network, spreading through the underground channels like dye through capillaries. Some areas close to the growth perimeter showed minimal impact because the local ley lines ran in a different direction. Others, further away, were already degrading because a major ley conduit passed through the growth zone before reaching them.

Cloudrest sat on a secondary ley junction. Three lines converged beneath the town — a configuration that made it an excellent location for a Medicine Hall branch, because the ambient spiritual energy supported alchemy and cultivation healing at higher efficiency than the surrounding countryside. The same configuration now made it a target. The organism’s consumption was traveling along those three lines, and the spiritual energy that made Branch 7 effective was the same energy being drained away.

"How long?" Raven asked.

"The growth perimeter reaches Cloudrest’s district in eight to ten weeks at the current expansion rate. But the corruption effects are already manifesting. Lira’s latest supply request included increased quantities of meridian stabilization compound and spiritual vitality restoratives — formulations we use for cultivation strain, not standard civilian medical care."
