Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 388 - 387: What They Carried Home

Location:Seven Peaks — Gates, Central Plaza, Command Center

Date/Time:TC1854.08.10-12

The formation perimeter registered them at sixty kilometers.

Three hundred and fifteen signatures approaching from the south — a mass of spiritual frequencies that the detection array processed with increasing confusion as the distance closed. Three hundred and twelve of the signatures carried a classification the system had never encountered: not cultivation, not formation-resonance, not any category in the database that Marcus and Silas had built over a year of calibrating the network to identify everything that walked, flew, or slithered within range.

The signatures were alive in a way that metal shouldn’t have been. Spiritual channels threading through mechanical architecture. Organic and technological frequencies merged at a level that the formation network could detect but couldn’t classify. The system flagged them as anomalous and escalated the alert.

The remaining three signatures were worse. The network couldn’t categorize them at all. Bio-craft biology — animal-human hybrid physiology — didn’t match any profile in the system. The formation array, confronted with organisms whose fundamental biology operated on principles it had never been designed to process, produced the diagnostic equivalent of a confused shrug and routed the alert to the command center.

Raven felt them before the alert arrived.

The Kirin life-sense reaching through the mountain’s spiritual architecture, past the satellites, past the formation relay pillars, into the borderlands where three hundred and fifteen people were walking the final approach road. Familiar signatures. Changed. The soldiers she’d healed in a poisoned valley, whose cybernetics she’d persuaded to cooperate with flesh, whose bodies she’d knelt beside for eight days while the ground healed beneath them. She recognized them the way you recognize a voice you haven’t heard in months — the same person, different tone.

Their cybernetics were alive. Not functioning — alive. The distinction registered through the Kirin sense as the difference between a formation-powered lamp and a bioluminescent flower. Both produced light. Only one was growing.

"They’re here," she said. To nobody. To the mountain. To the morning.
