She noticed before he did.

Morning. The garden beneath the Verdant Spire, where the formation-enhanced soil grew herbs at three times the natural rate, and the Moonveil Blossoms turned toward Jace whenever he walked past, and the living architecture produced benches that shaped themselves to whoever sat on them. Kairos stood near the central fountain — the one Silas had designed to circulate spiritual energy through water, producing a sound that was equal parts engineering and music.

His sleeves were empty.

Not the sleeves — the robes. The black fabric that had carried shifting silver patterns since the day he’d manifested on Ascara’s physical plane. Runes that had pulsed and flickered and flared at moments of significance — the Breaker erasure, the cocoon entry, the tribulation vigil. Runes that had dimmed over months as the cosmic authority that powered them bled away into the mortal atmosphere. Runes that had been the last visible thread connecting the man in the garden to the being who’d existed before Ascara’s sun ignited.

The thread was gone.

The robes were plain black. No silver traces. No cosmic embroidery. No shifting patterns that responded to dimensional energy or spiritual pressure or the particular frequency of the woman who’d been standing near him for months. Just fabric. Just cloth. Just the material that a mortal body wore because mortal bodies required covering.

Kairos stood in the garden looking at his sleeves the way someone looks at a familiar landscape after a flood. Recognizing the shape. Seeing the loss. His hands — the hands that had erased a Breaker, that had held a dying woman through a cardiovascular reconstruction, that had shaken for the first time in an existence that predated fear — turning at the wrists, examining empty fabric where meaning used to be.

He’d been mortal for months. Had learned the body’s complaints and its capabilities and its appalling inefficiency and its unexpected gifts — the sunrise that looked different through mortal eyes, the tea that tasted different on a mortal tongue, the warmth of a shoulder that registered through mortal skin. But the runes had been there. The last ember. The proof that he was something more than the body he inhabited.

The ember was out.

7T9, from Raven’s shoulder, private frequency: "Terminal depletion. The cosmic authority reservoir has been exhausted. Residual signature indicates forced recall within five to seven days. The Accord’s retrieval mechanism will engage automatically — he won’t have a choice." A pause. "I’m sorry."
