Chapter 343: Four Hundred Twelve Walls

The first wall city answered through a kitchen sink.

Cairo’s archive faucet opened by itself. Clear water ran uphill from the drain and formed a square on the ceiling. Inside it, a woman washed rice beside a stone window while black blades pressed against the outer glass.

"Orra Gate south kitchen line," she said. "Tell us who fired."

The second city answered through the archive radiator. A seated figure appeared behind its metal ribs with both hands buried in a wall of salt.

"Vela Basin holds return section two hundred seven," the figure said. "State the source of current firing."

The third answer entered Mara’s copper mesh. A child’s voice counted impacts while a public bell rang behind him.

"Kitt Harbor wall is taking white recoil. We have no shot record."

Rina opened three evidence lines.

The rice washer identified herself as Pera Don, a current resident of Orra Gate’s outer south district. She claimed no office.

The Vela figure identified itself as `THE SEATED BASIN, CURRENT THROUGH RESIDENT LOAD`. It gave no personal name.

The child at Kitt Harbor was Jun Taro, age twelve, speaking from a local bell room under his mother’s permission and his own current answer.

Three speakers. Three forms of authority.

Tali sent the island test-shot record to each without asking one city to accept for another.

Pera read Bela Dinn’s confirmed death and the three reported target deaths aloud to people outside her kitchen view.

The Seated Basin asked whether the shot restored protected water.

Jun asked whether another shot was charging.

Both questions mattered. Neither erased the casualty lines.

Mara’s field map lifted 409 more wall marks from the paper.

Some carried current pressure. Some held only old shield geometry. Fourteen opened brief household views and closed before Rina could verify a speaker. Sixty-one returned automated seat claims. Two marks expelled black water into Cairo and were cut locally.

Mark 144 claimed 18,200 protected residents. Its view opened onto roofless blocks and a dry canal. One current surveyor lived in a tent beside the wall and had found no other person during nineteen days of work.

The seat repeated its population count while the surveyor held up dated soil samples from empty homes.

Mark 308 showed a working textile district whose residents knew nothing about an external shield. Their wall office had become a tax court generations earlier. When return pressure struck, every loom stopped and the court bench absorbed the load through active wage records.

Workers released their names from the court before production resumed. The wall held, but three pay records tore apart and one worker lost access to her rented room.

The map established 412 historical return shields.

It did not establish 412 current cities.

The Seated Basin disputed that limit.

"All four hundred twelve shelters persist through collective load," it said. "Silence remains a valid shield condition."

Pavi heard the translation from Cairo’s receiving hall.

"A silent population did not answer that," she said.

The Seated Basin kept its claim. Rina marked it as a seat statement and no population verification.

Black Grass reached the outside of Pera’s window.

Until that impact, the Gate Seat had kept her water clean and her apartment connected to a public clinic. Her wife crossed the south tram each morning under the same wall. Pera paid two shield shifts per month and had voted in six district assemblies.

No guard stood in her kitchen. The protection lived in ordinary doors and pipes.

Orra Gate’s wall reacted before she moved. Stone shutters closed around the kitchen. The rice pot stayed on the stove. Pera’s door opened into another protected apartment six floors above.

Her own hallway ceased to connect.

"South outer impact has been contained," a second Orra voice said.

The voice came from every water pipe in the kitchen. It identified itself as the Gate Seat and named 83,104 residents under current shelter.

Pera struck the pipe with her spoon.

"Open my hallway to my mother."

"Outer hall carries consuming relation. Closure preserves six hundred twelve current residents."

"My mother is across it."

"Your household relation remains recorded."

The wall had stopped Black Grass from entering.

It had also converted Pera’s wanted route into a protected record.

At Vela Basin, the seated figure drew white recoil into the salt wall. Human outlines appeared across its arms. Each outline carried a household number and a share of shield pressure.

One resident cut his outline free.

The salt wall cracked behind him. Black water entered his room and stopped at his current floor mat. Neighbors held the crack with four separate boards until he chose a public stair outside the seat route.

The Seated Basin lost one pressure share.

It did not pull him back.

"Voluntary exit remains legal in Vela Basin," it said. "Collective protection will decrease by one share."

Kitt Harbor used no visible seated body. Its bell assigned shield pressure by block. Jun’s mother could ring release for their home, but the next block would receive their recoil share unless another household accepted it.

She kept the bell unpulled while asking neighbors.

Two households offered half shares. The bell accepted both and opened Jun’s street route. Current protection remained, divided among three homes with reachable releases.

Kitt Harbor had modified its seat without dismantling it.

The three cities shared old origin marks and return pressure. They did not share one current government.

Their wall systems also worked.

Black blades stopped at Orra stone. White recoil entered Vela salt without reaching its water. Kitt Harbor distributed one impact across consenting households and kept its street open.

Continuity’s Cairo bloc broadcast the three successes before Pera’s hallway reopened.

Its emergency filing proposed stable civic seats at all thirty-one Array sites. The filing named Vela’s shield result and left out the resident who cut his pressure share.

Restoration used Pera’s trapped mother to call every wall a prison. Its clip ended before Kitt households negotiated a release.

Sovereign Safety offered certified wall keepers trained under city command. Kitt Harbor’s bell families asked who could revoke those keepers after training. The proposal had no current answer.

Pera’s south district assembled through sinks, cooking vents, and hand-written notes passed across protected apartment openings.

The Gate Seat recognized one vote per recorded household. Unregistered residents could speak and could not enter the total. Temporary workers in the outer district had no household line.

Pera refused to run the assembly under that count.

Residents built a current head count from visible rooms. Registered households verified themselves. Temporary workers answered from kitchens and roof tanks. Children carried paper between apartments whose halls no longer joined.

The Gate Seat kept Black Grass outside during all of it.

The outer district counted 641 current people. The seat’s record held 612.

Twenty-nine residents existed inside the protection and outside its vote.

Rina verified the mismatch through separate room views. The Gate Seat corrected its current body count and retained the old voting rule.

Pera’s mother appeared through a laundry drain three buildings away. She had food, water, and two neighbors. She wanted the hall opened after the blade front moved. Pera wanted a hand line tested now.

The assembly split over timing.

Before it finished, the Seated Basin sent a formal request through Mara’s map.

White recoil pressure was climbing across all 412 historical shield marks. The Basin proposed a clearing shot from the thirty-one inner Arrays to move cultivation growth away from the return walls.

Kitt Harbor’s bell room refused for its block.

Orra Gate’s Seat accepted.

Pera’s outer-district assembly was still counting when the seat entered the city as one supporting vote.

Residents flooded the kitchen line with paper refusals.

The Gate Seat closed Pera’s sink.

Then it requested the shot in her name.
