The Royal Collector stepped fully into the orchard with Gazel’s last wound still remembered by everyone who survived him. Its obsidian body stood taller than Loccy’s transformed frame.
No visible muscle explained the pressure bending nearby roots, while the single black Shard remained above its brow. Boundary lines ran from that key through the open route, feeding a distant core Divine Eye could not measure across worlds.
Eirwen’s silver markers divided the orchard into twelve living sectors. Garden paths remained empty, cottage doors stood open, and every worker’s name had been checked against the evacuation ledger.
Hajin verified those facts before treating the living ground as available for battle, and the creature said in the same calm voice Didi remembered, "Collection failure remains unresolved, and demonic royal blood will be recovered with accumulated penalty."
Didi’s hands shook once before silver-gold frost covered them as she said while moving toward the evacuated gardeners’ path, "You killed Gazel because he stood between us, but this time nobody stands behind me."
The Collector attacked before her final word faded, with one claw crossing the orchard toward Didi while the other bent through the blood sample’s remaining trace.
The divided movement attempted to seize both the royal source and the protected signature in the same instant. Hajin opened five Rings around his right forearm before the next response could land.
Aegis formed against the first claw, and the Legendary Chain wrapped the second. The impact compressed every golden layer into his chest before five-Ring strength held.
Orchard stones broke beneath his feet, then the force drove him across the living ground and through the outer palace road while the bracer distributed one violent backlash along its prepared seams.
Metal cracked near his elbow, so the Resonance pathways survived while the road opened beneath him, and Ferra said from the pavilion as she tracked the fractures, "Brace spent, the next full impact enters your arm."
Hajin tightened the Chain and pulled the Collector away from Didi inside the established operational boundary. Its boundary-fed mass barely shifted, yet the second claw lost contact with the blood sample while Vella sealed it inside her Spirit circulation.
Didi did not attack the creature first, but sent Crowned Frost through the gardener houses and froze every return gate so frightened workers could not enter a familiar orchard during the battle.
One elderly gardener had left medicine inside the nearest cottage and approached the outer wall despite the warning bells. Juna crossed the intervening roofs, placed him beside the medical wagons, and returned only after a clerk confirmed his name.
She kept the gate frozen throughout, choosing evacuation over the revenge within reach, as Juna said from above, "All civilians clear, and living ground belongs to Eirwen," while sweeping the final path with solar sight.
Eirwen planted her first Shard beneath a silverwood tree as roots answered across the orchard, but she held the Zone below manifestation while Hajin remained inside the Collector’s reach.
The creature flexed its trapped claw as black boundary lines traveled through the Chain and attempted to classify Hajin as harvest material.
Collector’s Grasp flared from his bare left palm and caught one exposed strand before the order reached his core as the Royal Collector examined the five Rings and said, "This one carries reconstructed divine blood, and agents concealed unacceptable maturation."
The warded mirror remained dark after Lucan severed its location feed, although Cessy’s voice still crossed through one protected channel.
"Our reports identified Dominion interference," Cessy said, choosing words that could survive an audit, "no order authorized collection during an active divine incursion."
"All blood becomes authorized when value exceeds local discretion," the Collector replied.
It closed the distance without traveling through the space between them. Hajin crossed Aegis and the Chain above his chest before an obsidian knee struck.
The impact lifted him from the broken road and sent him through an empty orchard wall. Collector’s Grasp preserved the movement’s boundary frequency during contact, while the nearby formation held.
The technique revealed that the creature did not teleport freely. It folded only along lines connected to its black key or an accepted blood claim.
Didi’s refusal had limited those anchors, while the open crossing route still supplied enough locations to overwhelm ordinary pursuit. Hajin shared the sampled lines with Aria and marked them across Eirwen’s root network.
Five Rings kept his body intact, but survival did not make the exchange equal. The Collector drew increasing authority through its key each time the crossing body touched Didi’s royal frequency.
Loccy charged from the side and drove both hands into its exposed shoulder. Her four-Wing strength shifted the creature three steps, enough for Juna’s solar cut to remove a boundary line connecting its left arm.
The severed line rebuilt from the open key before either could repeat the attack. Ferra drove a mundane pin through the momentary gap and timed the reconstruction.
The line returned in less than two heartbeats, which showed that damage to the crossing body could not outpace a distant core while the route remained intact.
"We are recording attacks for the orchard, not wearing it down," Ferra said, pulling the heated pin away, "nothing we break stays broken yet."
"Not the body," Hajin replied, rising through shattered stone, "the orchard must remember what passes through it."
Eirwen planted the remaining Shards in sequence once the pattern was clear, while living roots spread beneath every footprint and recorded pressure, heat, boundary cuts plus the creature’s attempt to uproot them.
The Collector turned toward her before the Zone finished as its claw opened a black seam beneath the nearest silverwood and tried to remove the living ground from its own roots.
Didi intercepted with Crowned Frost as the seam froze around her blood resonance and retaliated across all three Shards, forcing her to one knee while the creature reached for her through the frozen line.
For one heartbeat, Hajin saw Gazel’s final position reflected in Didi’s posture, and the memory did not belong to an outside viewpoint because it lived inside her recorded grief and the Collector’s unchanged movement.
She moved before the claw arrived as Didi rolled beneath the strike, seized two gardener bells from the ground, and sent their warning through every evacuated path.
The sound confirmed the paths were empty as Didi rose beyond its grasp and said, "I remember him, but I do not have to become the place where he died."
Hajin threw the Chain around the Collector’s waist and opened Aegis behind it. Loccy struck from the front, driving the crossing body backward into the golden barrier.
The collision gave Eirwen enough time to complete her final root connection. Twelve Shards settled around the orchard, and Eirwen lowered her bare palm to the soil.
She accepted every stored impact into her pathways as leaves lifted against gravity and exposed pale undersides toward the Collector, while severed roots contributed their final memory through branches still attached.
Every surviving leaf turned toward the obsidian creature while buried roots held an exact memory of each attack it had delivered, and the Royal Collector finally changed its expression.
"Alder retaliation structure," it said as it identified the coming answer, "remove the living substrate."
Black pressure descended across the orchard as trees bent, soil lifted, and roots tore from stone while the creature attempted to erase the record before Eirwen released it.
Hajin anchored the Chain through five Rings and held the Collector inside the destruction it created while the thing that killed Gazel crossed farther than one black Shard implied.
Defeating its manifested body would require the entire forest to remember how it arrived. Eirwen’s roots had begun that record, but the first retaliation was already trying to tear the memory out of the ground.
"Hold the network," Eirwen said, keeping her palm against the soil, "I will not let it decide that destroying the witness makes the attack lawful."
The roots answered her with a pressure that was not a Zone and not a command. They remembered the Collector’s first step and the fold through the black key.
They also remembered the line that had touched Didi’s blood before it reached the orchard.
Hajin felt the record settle through the Chain and did not need to destroy the distant core yet, but he needed to keep the crossing body inside a battlefield that could no longer be erased by breaking one tree.
Loccy shifted her hammer beneath the lifted soil, Worldbearer holding the nearest section of earth together while Juna cut black seams before they reached the silverwood roots. Ferra marked each recovered memory on the ground in blue.
