Chapter 182: Hard Work
Killian's POV
"I hoped so too." I smiled, rearranging my hair that I had jumbled with my hands. "And thank you for the encouragement–"
"No, really." She got serious. "As long as you had sight before, your subconscious could still conjure images in colours and shapes. Also, if it was a message from the goddess then you could even fly if she wanted you to."
So she wasn't just being hopeful? She truly believed? Had she heard of scenarios where a physically blind person could see at any other point even without their physical eyes?
"You really think so?"
"Yes. Your eyes were hurt, not your imagination or consciousness. Even your wolf could see right. Couldn't it?"
My heart squeezed inside my chest. It felt like Kaden wanted to pounce out of my body or likely kill me? But it hurt so much, yet not compared to the excitement brimming in my bones. "Should I try it now? I never did."
"You never shifted?" She held my face. "Why not?"
I held her hands on my face. "I was scared."
Her squeeze on my face softened. She caressed it softly before letting go. "Don't be. Even those who lost their legs could still shift and run. My uncle gained translocation too and became almost invincible despite being lame. You could too. Being blind wasn't that big of a deal honestly."
My mate was probably the only person who could think this way and I wholeheartedly believed it. I didn't dread wanting to shift anymore. She would still be uncomfortable but I knew she rooted for me. And that was all that mattered now. "Let me walk you in. I'd visit the training ground and tell you how it went."
"How would you tell me? Scream?" She teased. "I'd join you instead… ahh ahh… yes, I'd go in first. I'd be in the room."
I smiled. "Do you want to connect your mind link to me?"
"Am I strong enough to take it?"
Was she serious? She still had her serious tone, with drips of worry. How strong did she think my mind link would be? We were mates to each other and it naturally paired up after a while together, but I couldn't wait anymore. I felt like I had waited a long while for things to happen and now, I just needed them to be the moment I thought of them. We held hands and I concentrated. "It doesn't take long. Trust me."
"Okay."
"Say you trust me." I closed my eyes.
She snickered. "I don't."
That threw me off guard and I opened my eyes. So honest, wasn't she? "T-Then, believe it'd work at least. It needs something… something of a belief in you…"
"Oh, I believed it'd work. We'd known each other long enough."
"Yes…"
If she had known me long enough, hadn't she trusted me within that time? Had I done something she could never forget and forgive? There was something else, wasn't there? I shook my head and willed myself back to concentration.
A faint connection to her thoughts… and for some reason, it broke. Almost comically, she threw my hands off and stepped back. Had something affected her? "Sorry…" My unsteady concentration must have affected her connection.
She burst into laughter suddenly. Did she find this funny? I assumed she wasn't affected but might have caused the link not connecting, and reflected on what could have gone wrong.
"No need to feel like I chased you out. Let's just try again. Maybe it just didn't connect." She shrugged.
"I didn't think you chased me out." I grumbled. I had felt something but was shut out immediately, but that could have been because I didn't concentrate enough.
"But you do think so, I could feel it." She nudged me.
Did she enjoy teasing me now… wait, she could feel it? I paused, and held onto her hand. I couldn't tell what she felt anymore. The last thing I could use to understand my mate had become out of my reach! I panicked and squeezed her hand a little too hard.
"What's wrong? Did I take something from you?"
She could feel my emotions. Was this a good thing… of course, it should be… but then, at the expense of having to understand her. I didn't want it like this. "I guess…"
"Killian, you were more honest with your feelings than I assumed," she said suddenly. I dropped her hand and stepped away. Was I being judged, or just acknowledged?
"This was the best time to stop overthinking, you brat!" Kaden yelled at me. "Now she could understand you without you jumbling over your words. That's better!"
It wasn't like I wanted a sense of mystery with my mate, but even I didn't want my thoughts and feelings to be processed by me, talk less of my mate noticing them.
"Well, maybe if I didn't stay close to you all the time, I wouldn't sense it." She tried offering a solution but that felt worse, unbearable even.
She sighed. "You don't want that, either?"
I rubbed my temples. Kaden. And now my mate. I just couldn't think and feel in peace anymore. She started laughing again. "I'm almost overwhelmed with how fast your emotions change, Killian. It's impressive, truly."
A scoff left me. I didn't feel her emotions this vividly. It was like she could read my mind. It was almost unsettling. What did I do that transferred that to her?
"I nearly forgot. I had to shift." I held her face to stop her from laughing, but got flustered from my action. "Just stay in the room. Stay at the window. I'd check on you from the training ground."
"Okay, but first…" she clasped her hands on my own face. "Think positive and steady yourself before opening your eyes."
I let go of her face first. "I will. Thank you."
"You don't need to thank me all the time. I won't be doing that."
I smiled. I didn't need to reciprocate every good thing I received from her? I received so much more than she could imagine, terribly spoiled with the safety I felt. "Because we'd known each other long enough?"
