Chapter 595 - 593: Dad, You Need to Look on the Bright Side
Meanwhile.
When Arthur Jacobs awoke, he felt something gnawing on his toes.
"...What is that?"
He scrambled up from the floor and wiggled his foot. A rat scurried away from him. The mere sight of it made Arthur Jacobs scream. He shot back into a corner, pressing his back against the wall and hugging his knees to his chest.
Another rat darted past his eyes.
"Rats... There are rats."
"Someone... There are rats in here!"
The thought that a rat had just been chewing on his toes made Arthur Jacobs’s face drain of color. He completely lost his composure.
The moment he opened his mouth, an angry voice cursed at him.
"What’s all the racket? This is the Sky-Prison, of course there are rats! What a bumpkin. Which young master is still half-asleep? What, you expect me to go in there and catch them for you?"
As the man spoke, a figure with a scar on his face appeared at the barred cell door. He shot Arthur a casual glance and said coldly, "Quiet down. You’re about to die and you’re still making a fuss. Keep screaming and I’ll cut out your tongue."
’Cut out my tongue?’ The words made Arthur Jacobs’s face turn white. He sat there, silent.
After the man left, he finally took a good look at his surroundings. This was the dark, damp Sky-Prison. Not far from him, a small pile of dry straw lay scattered on the ground. The floor and walls were covered in mildew, and the air reeked of it.
’This is the Sky-Prison. I’ve been thrown into the Sky-Prison.’ Before Arthur Jacobs could fully process this, he heard the sound of crying.
"What are we going to do?"
"I don’t want to die."
"SOB... I don’t want to die."
Hearing the crying, Arthur Jacobs looked up and saw his father’s concubines and his several half-sisters. He had always despised them, and seeing them now only intensified his revulsion.
But when they saw he was awake, three young girls who had been huddled with their mothers quickly stood up and looked at him.
"Big Brother, you’re awake."
"Are you okay?"
"Big Brother, what do we do now?"
The cell held only his father’s concubines and his half-sisters. He couldn’t see Mrs. Dawson or his own father. Seeing two of the timid girls approach him, he shot them a look of disgust.
"Get away from me. A servant girl born of a slut. You think you’re worthy of calling me Big Brother?"
At his words, the concubines pulled their children close, their eyes filled with resentment. ’We’re all going to die anyway,’ they thought, ’why should we be polite to him?’
"Shut your mouth! Who are you calling a slut? You call my daughter a servant girl, but what makes you so high and mighty? Young Master? We call you that, and you really think you’re some kind of god? Do you still think you’re the young master of the General’s Mansion? The General’s Mansion is gone! You’re a prisoner, just like us. Arthur Jacobs, you’re a menace! Ever since you came back to the General’s Mansion, there hasn’t been a single day of peace. You’re a walking disaster!"
The concubines glared at him, their faces contorted with rage.
One of them spoke up. "We just wanted to live a quiet life, but it’s all your fault. We heard the guards talking. You secretly sent assassins after the Princely Heir of the Warden’s Northern Manor! What a sin! If you were so eager to die, why did you have to drag us down with you?"
"SOB..." another concubine, her hair a mess, cried sorrowfully.
"And your father, Caleb Jacobs! He’s not a General at all. He’s an imposter and a murderer! Now we’re locked in this sunless hellhole. I heard we’re going to die tomorrow... to be beheaded. SOB... I don’t want to die. My daughter is still so young."
Arthur Jacobs was also on the verge of collapse.
He didn’t want to die either.
He looked around frantically.
"Where’s my father? My mother? They must have a plan."
Just as he said that, bloodcurdling screams echoed from outside the cell.
"AHHHH..."
"AH... Stop hitting me!"
"Help..."
"I’ll talk... I’ll confess..."
It was the voice of his father, Caleb Jacobs, mixed with that of his mother, Mrs. Dawson. Hearing those horrific screams, Arthur Jacobs clenched his fists. He shrank back into the corner, not daring to speak. His eyes were filled with bitter unwillingness.
He muttered to himself.
"How could this happen? I don’t believe it."
’My father’s status as a General is fake. It’s fake. My own identity as the young master of the General’s Mansion is also fake. Even the system was a liar. It unbound itself and abandoned me completely.’
"I can’t accept this."
’All I wanted was to be better than everyone else. What’s wrong with that? For this, I killed the old beggar who treated me like his own son. I was even willing to crawl through a doggy door and be ridiculed. I did so much, so why can’t I get what I want?’
’If I had known the General’s Mansion was a cage, I never would have come back. It’s all my father’s fault, that old bastard. Why wasn’t he a real General? Why did he have to kill someone and steal their identity? And then he had to get caught. What a useless piece of trash.’
’And Nathan Jacobs.’
"Nathan Jacobs, this is all your fault."
"You stole my identity when we were children, and now that I’ve finally come back, you’ve ruined me."
’It’s all because of that bastard.’
’He should have died.’
’Why didn’t he just lie down and die?’
’The very first time I saw Nathan Jacobs, I had a feeling. If I didn’t kill him soon, he would grow up to overshadow me in every way. If he didn’t die, I would never know peace. Now, my premonition has come true.’
’Not only did that bastard not die, but he came back alive as Aaron Sinclair, the son of a Prince. The thought made his eyes burn red with jealousy. All of that should have been mine. Aaron Sinclair... what right does he have to any of it?’
At this moment, Arthur Jacobs was descending into madness.
He didn’t think he had done anything wrong, only that his methods hadn’t been ruthless enough. He should have sent more men, hired the best assassins to eliminate the threat for good.
"If I could do it all over again, I would never let him get away."
As Arthur Jacobs stewed in his fury, an unknown amount of time passed, and the screaming finally stopped. When the jailers who had been interrogating them dragged Mrs. Dawson and Caleb Jacobs back to the cell, the pair were on the verge of death, barely breathing.
"Get in there. What bad luck."
Someone opened their cell door, threw Mrs. Dawson and her husband inside, and they landed heavily on the floor. Then, the cell was shut and locked again.
Inside the cell, the figures of Mrs. Dawson and Caleb Jacobs lay on the ground. They were in bloody tatters, looking as if they were already dead.
Arthur Jacobs was terrified by the sight.
He scrambled to his feet and rushed to the cell door.
He gripped the bars.
"Let me out! Let me out!"
"I have nothing to do with the General’s Mansion! I’m not his son!"
Barely conscious and half-dead, Caleb Jacobs forced his eyes open. He had just struggled to lift his head when he heard his son disowning him. The shock was so great he couldn’t catch his breath, and he promptly coughed up blood and passed out.
Arthur Jacobs’s words made Caleb Jacobs’s concubines’ eyes light up, as if they had just grasped a life-saving straw.
They rushed to the cell door.
"Guards! Guards! I want to report a crime!"
"Guards! I want to accuse Caleb Jacobs of forcing me to be his wife! I was forced to be his concubine. My daughter isn’t his!"
In an instant, a real drama began to unfold inside the prison cell.
