Chapter 594 - 592: Dad, Who Is the Ex-Husband?
Javier Sinclair leaned a bit closer to his wife and said, "Darling, I’m so hurt, so helpless. This boy is falsely accusing me."
Aaron Sinclair, sitting across from them, froze with his chopsticks in hand. He was speechless at the sight of his father’s antics. ’When it comes to being shameless,’ he thought, ’my own dad really takes the cake.’ He shuddered, looking like he couldn’t take it anymore.
He glanced at his mother and chuckled mischievously. "Mom, how about we get a new dad?"
’A new dad?’ Celeste Grant froze for a moment at his words, then couldn’t help but burst into laughter. "Hahaha, son, that’s certainly an option worth considering."
The moment she spoke, Javier Sinclair shot her the look of an aggrieved husband. "Celeste Grant, you’re actually considering it. I knew you hadn’t forgotten that ex-husband of yours. Heh, in the end, it seems my love was all for naught."
’Tsk tsk, just listen to that. Her Archfiend is cracking jokes now. Is this really the same Demon with the fearsome reputation? Time truly can change a person.’
At that thought, Celeste Grant looked up and rolled her eyes at him.
Celeste Grant and Javier Sinclair didn’t think anything of their back-and-forth, but Aaron, who was sitting right there, found his eyes widening slightly.
Aaron’s chopsticks clattered onto the table. He lifted his head, his gaze fixed on his parents. His face was a mask of shock, his eyes filled with a probing curiosity. His gaze, brimming with a thirst for gossip, darted back and forth between his dad and mom.
’What did Dad just say? If I heard him right... did he just mention an ex-husband?’
"Whoa."
He couldn’t help but let out that "whoa," his face a picture of intense curiosity. ’Mom had an ex-husband? Then how in the world did Dad end up with her? Did he have to fight and claw his way to the top? Or did he... secretly get rid of the ex-husband?’
From that one line from his dad, his mind had already constructed an entire melodramatic soap opera plot full of "I love you, but I thought you loved someone else" misunderstandings. ’Could it be that my dad and mom only got together after countless trials and tribulations?’
He craned his neck slightly and asked in a low voice, "Dad, I have a question, and I don’t know if I should ask, but... who is this ex-husband?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, the corner of Javier Sinclair’s lips twitched. He had the distinct feeling that he’d just shot himself in the foot. He shot his son a glare and said gruffly,
"He’s dead."
Hearing this, Aaron murmured,
"What a shame."
Celeste Grant couldn’t help but laugh from her seat. Her thoughts drifted to the past, and a gentle smile touched her lips, her eyes softening. She remembered how Javier Sinclair had once awakened the power of the Demon God for her sake. His body, unable to bear that power, had crumbled and dissipated. Even though those memories were from long ago, and he was by her side once more, she could still recall everything that had happened with perfect clarity.
"Your ’ex-husband’... he was a wonderful person. Gentle, powerful... and he would have given his life for your mother." As she spoke, her gaze fell on Javier Sinclair, and she smiled faintly.
His own gaze happened to be on her, and their eyes met. Celeste could see Javier’s ears turn red. She heard him mutter in a low voice, "Well, that’s what I’m supposed to do."
’Even as the Demon God, he had a duty to protect his wife and child. Even if he had to do it all over again, knowing it would lead to his death, he would still save her without a moment’s hesitation.’
"..." Aaron fell silent.
’The world of adults is so complicated,’ he suddenly thought. ’When Mom mentioned that dead ex-husband, her eyes were so gentle. That was clearly a sign of deep love. Of course, I can tell she’s genuine with Dad, too.’
A thought popped into Aaron’s head: ’Yikes. "I love him, but I love you, too."’
He murmured,
"He’s her tragic lost love."
Aaron then thought of another line and couldn’t stop himself from muttering it aloud. "And what’s more devastating than a tragic lost love? A tragic lost love who’s already dead."
The moment he spoke, both Celeste Grant and Javier Sinclair were struck completely silent.
Celeste Grant: "..."
Javier Sinclair: "..."
Aaron’s gaze landed on his father. He sighed faintly, his face full of pity. "Dad," he said, "you have to try and look on the bright side. Mom does still love you, really."
Javier Sinclair finally snapped. He shot a vicious glare at his son and ground out through his teeth, "Oh, great. Just great. You’re a real great son to have. What’s with that strange look? Do I look like I need your pity?"
Aaron said, "It’s okay, Dad. I won’t laugh at you. Even though the memory of... the other dad... is powerful and something Mom will cherish forever, you’re the one who gets to be by her side. When you think about it that way, doesn’t it make you feel a little better?"
Javier Sinclair leaned back in his chair and said gruffly, "Oh, I’m just so grateful to you." ’Of all the things for him to inherit, why did it have to be my sharp tongue? I never thought it was a big deal before, but now it feels like a boomerang just came back and hit me square in the chest.’
"This is karma."
Aaron glanced at him.
"Dad, try to look on the bright side."
Seeing her son trying to console his father, Celeste Grant couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out laughing. "Oh my god, this is killing me! Hahaha!"
Javier Sinclair reached out and wrapped an arm around Celeste’s waist. He looked at his son and began to set the record straight. "I feel the need to correct your baseless speculation. Your mother has only ever loved me. There has never been anyone else. That ’tragic lost love,’ the ’dead tragic lost love’... that was me. It has always been me."
Aaron froze, then looked at his mother. "So, there’s more to this story that I don’t know?"
Javier Sinclair shot him a look and said in a low voice, "Kids shouldn’t be so nosy. All you need to know is that this ’tragic lost love,’ this ’ex-husband,’ that’s me, your dad. Got it?"
Celeste Grant nodded. After a moment’s thought, she explained, "Mm-hmm. From start to finish, it’s only ever been your dad. There was no one else. Let’s just say... a long time ago, your dad hit his head and lost his memory. He became convinced that I had an ex-husband, and that I was only with him because he resembled this ex. He had a grand old time being jealous of himself."
Javier Sinclair blushed.
He glanced at Celeste, coughed in embarrassment, then leaned in close and whispered, "Darling, it’s not like your husband needs any dignity."
Celeste scoffed.
"My dear Archfiend, since when did you have a concept of dignity?"
Javier Sinclair spread his hands in a helpless gesture.
"Alright, fine. It’s not like dignity is worth any money."
’Ever since he’d gotten a wife, he’d been selling off his dignity by the pound anyway.’
Aaron finally understood.
He glanced at his obviously loving parents with a sigh of wonder. "Dad, Mom, your love story is really something else."
Celeste smiled. "Speaking of which, I’m definitely qualified to comment on that. Your dad and I have been through a lot. Looking back on it, most of it was actually very sweet. We’ve walked this road together, hand in hand, and it’s been pretty great."
"You’re still young. When you’re older, you’ll understand."
Aaron smiled.
"I’m in no hurry to grow up."
’He felt that life was perfect just the way it was.’
