Chapter 263 - 261: Follow to the Death
Blinded by anger a moment ago, they finally snapped to their senses when they heard the voice. Instantly, they detected a faint fluctuation of a Primordial Spirit in the area.
This faint Primordial Spirit fluctuation... this aura... it was his sister’s.
A look of delighted surprise on his face, Elder Sawyer scanned his surroundings, but saw no one. However, as a cultivator, he immediately pinpointed the source of the faint Primordial Spirit fluctuation: a tree branch not far from him.
He wasn’t the only one; Yvonne Sawyer and Victor Rhodes noticed it as well. Their gazes converged on a thorny tree growing by the cliff’s edge, focusing on a single branch.
The three of them drew closer, their eyes fixed on the Seven-star Ladybug perched atop the branch.
It was just an ordinary Seven-star Ladybug. Perhaps because the area was rich in Spiritual Energy, it had grown quite large—about the size of a thumb.
But a single glance was enough to tell it hadn’t developed any intelligence. It couldn’t even be considered a Demonic Beast; it was just a common insect.
And yet, the faint Primordial Spirit fluctuation was undeniably emanating from it.
Victor Rhodes started to reach out, but then remembered this was his mother-in-law. Thinking it would be rude, he quickly pulled his hand back. "Is this... my mother-in-law?"
Sensing the familiar Primordial Spirit fluctuation, Elder Sawyer’s face lit up with excitement.
"Sister..."
The rims of his eyes reddened the moment he spoke.
Just then, the Seven-star Ladybug flapped its wings and flew onto his sleeve, where it came to a rest.
"Brother, it’s me."
The voice of a female cultivator drifted over. He knew that voice better than anyone—it truly was his sister, Hannah Sawyer.
Elder Sawyer gently stroked the small insect, a smile spreading across his face.
"This is wonderful... As long as you’re alive, that’s all that matters."
It was just like all the times he had patted his sister’s head before. Even after she became the High Priest, the bond between them had never wavered.
Yvonne Sawyer, standing beside Elder Sawyer, watched in silence. She appeared calm and composed, but in reality, she was gripping Victor Rhodes’s hand so tightly her palm was slick with nervous sweat.
This was the first time Yvonne Sawyer had ever felt her mother’s presence, and her eyes filled with joy.
She had visited before with her uncle, but her mother’s Primordial Spirit had always been in a deep slumber. Yvonne Sawyer had thought it might be another century or two before her mother woke up. She never expected her Primordial Spirit to awaken so soon.
Elder Sawyer looked at the Seven-star Ladybug on his sleeve. When he held out his hand, the ladybug crawled onto his finger.
"You’re finally awake. Yana and I have been waiting for you to wake up."
Hearing this, the voice grew choked with emotion.
"Yana..."
Hannah Sawyer saw the female cultivator standing beside her brother, whose face resembled her own. Hannah Sawyer recognized her in a single glance—this was her daughter. ’Perhaps this is what they call the bond between a mother and her child,’ she thought.
"My daughter."
A soul body manifested, appearing before them.
The figure was that of the woman who had been lying in the Ice Coffin. She was incredibly weak now. It had taken all her strength just to manifest this faint soul body, which flickered translucently, as if it could dissipate at any moment.
She reached out and gently caressed her daughter’s face, a smile gracing her lips. "My daughter... Mother can finally see you."
She reached out, wanting to hug her child, but she was too weak to fully materialize and couldn’t touch her. The fact that her fingers could even make contact was the extent of her power.
Seeing her mother in such a fragile state, a look of concern crossed Yvonne Sawyer’s face.
"Mother... I’m here."
Yvonne Sawyer clasped her mother’s hand as tears began to fall.
’This is my mother.’
’Mother is so beautiful.’
’She’s like a vision from a painting.’
"Don’t cry, my daughter."
"Mother... I missed you so much."
Yvonne Sawyer had a cold personality and was usually quite aloof. She rarely let her emotions show, but now, looking at her mother, she was weeping. Perhaps every child, no matter their age, is always just a child to their parents.
Hearing her daughter say she missed her, Hannah Sawyer’s eyes welled with tears as she gently embraced her child.
"Mother missed you too."
’My daughter isn’t distant.’
’She missed me.’
In that moment, Hannah Sawyer was as happy as a child.
"Let Mother get a good look at you."
She cupped Yvonne Sawyer’s face, smiling as she drank in the sight of her, feeling as if she could never look at her enough.
"My Yana is so beautiful. So lovely, just so lovely."
Her daughter was noble and beautiful, with a face that resembled her own.
’I remember when the incident happened, my daughter had just been born. In the blink of an eye, she’s already grown so much.’
’If Brother Caelan were still here, he would be so happy to see our daughter all grown up.’ Thinking of Yvonne Sawyer’s father, Hannah Sawyer was overcome with sorrow. ’Brother Caelan is dead, his soul shattered and scattered, without a single trace left behind.’
’Look at my daughter’s cultivation... she’s already at the Late Stage of Golden Core. As expected of my child. Her talent is truly remarkable.’
Hannah Sawyer’s face was filled with a mother’s pride. Looking at her brother, whose appearance hadn’t changed, she squeezed his hand. "Brother, you’ve worked so hard all these years."
Zachary Sawyer shook his head. "It was no hardship. As long as you’re okay, anything I did was worth it."
In the midst of this happy family reunion, Hannah Sawyer couldn’t help but say with a smile, "Brother, you haven’t changed a bit. You’re still as handsome as ever."
Zachary Sawyer chuckled. "You silly girl. I’m an old man now."
’After everything that’s happened, my face may not have changed, but my heart has grown old.’
Hannah Sawyer laughed. "You’re not old... In my heart, you’ll always be my handsome, dashing big brother."
Her words brought a long-absent smile to Elder Sawyer’s face.
The three of them embraced, their faces alight with genuine smiles. Victor Rhodes watched the scene unfold in silence, standing off to the side.
Just then, Hannah Sawyer thought of the safety of their people and couldn’t help but ask, "Brother, what about our clansmen? Did any of them escape? What has become of our clan on Mt. Norgath?"
As the High Priest of the Wyrm Clan, protecting her people was her mission, so the first thing she did after waking up was to ask about them.
Hearing this, Zachary Sawyer said, "They’re fine, just fine! Our people are doing very well. The clan has grown so much. We had over sixty newborns this year alone. Back then, I thought our clan was doomed to be wiped out. But The Exalted One was passing by and saved us. Since then, I’ve led the Norgath Clan in pledging our lives to follow The Exalted One."
Hannah Sawyer let out a soft "ah."
’I don’t quite understand.’
"The Exalted One?"
Elder Sawyer said, "It’s The Blood-Venerate."
’What did I just hear?’ "Is it the one I’m thinking of? The Demon who slaughtered thousands of Cultivators overnight?"
So, The Exalted One’s reputation was as infamous as ever.
"Don’t be ridiculous. The Exalted One isn’t what you think. The people who died at The Exalted One’s hands all deserved it."
"I understand, Brother. I won’t say another word."
’It doesn’t matter who they are. Anyone who could save my people is a benefactor. Pledging our lives to follow them isn’t going too far at all.’
