Chapter 93: Ch 94: New batch of guests
Two days passed peacefully. There were no unnecessary tasks, no fighting, and most importantly—there were no hidden missions.
Rin focused this time on improving his skills.
He had gotten a taste of earning money and he wanted more. He wanted to have an endless supply of money at his disposal.
He also needed to stock up on the potions to reduce the burden on Reina and Amelia. So he worked hard.
It only took him two days to deviate from the recommended dose of one rum-coffee per day and make a second cup. And it was safe to say that the system was not amused.
[Rookie, do you like abusing your body more than necessary? There is a reason there are warning labels on things. They are for you to follow.]
[(つ╥﹏╥)つ]
[Ugh, this system feels sorry for itself. Just thinking of the mess it will have to clean up is heartbreaking]
"Stop being dramatic. A little coffee won’t kill me. But I do need to reach enlightenment to craft more potions. I wonder what other upgrades I could get."
Rin already felt overpowered with his weapon enhancement as well as potion crafting. But to know that this wasn’t even the limit of his skill filled him with excitement.
But it all came crashing down within the next hour.
Collin entered his office with an unusually serious expression on his face and Rin instantly knew that something had gone wrong.
"Do you need something from me?"
Rin asked his butler and the elder nodded with a little hesitation.
"There are more guests who have arrived to ’talk’ with you. They looked a little tense so I escorted them to the guest conference room. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to meet them, Young Master. Should I make an excuse and send them away?"
Collin asked and Rin paused to think about it.
He trusted Collin’s judgment, so he would have usually taken his advice about sending these people away.
But he knew his butler well. If these people were the usual ’small fries’ then Collin would not have even allowed them into the guest room.
It meant that these guests were important enough to be shown courtesy but also dangerous enough that the head butler did not want them to meet Rin.
He was curious to know who they were. So he decided to check them out himself.
"I will meet with our ’important guests’. Let’s head to the conference room. Who’s attending to them right now?"
"Ah, Miss Teressa is. Usually, I would not have allowed someone as new as her to handle negotiations, but Miss Teressa has a way with words I have not seen before. She felt like a good choice to entertain our guests."
Collin had good intuition.
As a succubus, Teressa had a natural charm that attracted people to her even when she was not using her powers. It made her the best person to set the mood. (For some reason, her power did not work on Shelly or Reina)
He did not trust Teressa, but he did know her nature. As long as she could benefit from his settlement, she would do what she needed to make it prosper.
And she did not disappoint this time either.
The atmosphere inside the conference room was calm and everyone was drinking tea. They looked at the door as soon as he entered, and their frowns deepened.
"You brought...a man? We asked for your leader-"
"But Rin is our leader. He is the one who made his place and he’s also my master. Please be careful when you speak to him. Or you might make me upset."
Teressa lightly threatened with a disappointed look on her face and two-thirds of the party sitting in front of her looked uncomfortable.
There were seven guests in total but the hierarchy was clear to see. They were all looking at the blonde woman sitting in the middle.
"Hmph! I cannot believe I am being forced to entertain a settlement with a male leader. This is a waste of my time. Everyone, we are heading back now."
"B-But miss, what about Kora? We are here to find her. Are we going to abandon her?"
the blonde leader’s words were questioned by the one sitting beside her. That question immediately soured the mood and the unnamed blond coughed before changing her tone again.
"You are right. We should find her first and then leave. Ugh, this is what being around men does to me. It makes me a buffoon."
Rin felt insulted by those words.
Before he could call the blond leader out, she decided to address him. She snapped her fan close and let out a villainess-like laugh.
"Hey you! I am going to give you a chance to prove your sincerity toward me. Tell me where you are keeping Kora and return her to us. I will only lightly punish you if you follow my words."
The woman ordered while maintaining eye contact.
[User Mellisa has used ’Mind-Manipulation’ on you]
[Due to your status as the ’system employee’, mental abilities will not work on you.]
Rin felt unaffected but he was not sure that everyone else had the same immunity. So he pretended he had not noticed and remained seated.
Mellisa looked at him and his companions with a disgusted frown on her face before she stood up and walked up to Teressa.
Teressa did not even move when she was touched but only slowly blinked and looked up. She was affected by the ability.
Even Collin remained calm and composed, showing he was under Mellisa’s ability as well.
"Hmm, you have got a nice face, but you are not my type. I’ll pass on you. Now you! Tell me what you know about Kora and hand her over."
Mellisa demanded from Rin as she sat in front of him and crossed her arms. She was waiting for Rin to tell her the truth so she could expose his crimes for all to see.
Unfortunately for her, Rin had no idea where Kora was. The last thing he recalled was her leaving the settlement.
He told this to Mellisa and she lost her temper.
"What do you mean this is ’what you know’? Why didn’t Kora return if she walked out of this settlement? You must have done something to her. Just tell me the truth already."
Mellisa demanded but unfortunately for her, Rin could not help her with this situation.
