Chapter 83: Ch 83: I’ll keep your secret
It was unfortunate that Rin could not physically grab the system and force it to talk. So he was forced to compromise and open the file. After all, there was always a chance that it could turn out to be useful.
But he should have known better than to expect anything from the system.
[Extra mission: Find SOS’s missing item.
Time: No time limit.
Task details: Please find XXXX and make sure to return it to XXXX. The way to find the missing item is by XXXXXXXXX and XXXXXX. It has XXXX marks and XXXX powers.
If you cannot read the full report, then the task is not for your authority level. Please report to your senior and file a complaint.]
"So, how do I file a complaint? I cannot read a single thing in this file."
Rin looked at the task detail but nothing changed. he still couldn’t make out what the task wanted him to do.
The only thing left for him to do was file a complaint against the system.
[Rookie, don’t be so trigger-happy toward your superior. This is all being done to help you climb up the corporate ladder. You should be grateful to me for this opportunity.]
"That sounds like some corporate bullshit."
[Awww, don’t be like that, Rookie. I believe in you.]
[(˶ ˘ ³˘)ˆᵕ ˆ˶)]
[This system knows you will do well.]
Rin gagged reading the message and his head immediately started to throb. The system noticed and decided to make a run for it.
"What a hassle. Now, what do I do with half-baked information?"
Unfortunately, Rin had no time to think about this. One second, he was busy sorting out the information, the next, Collin burst through the door, a hint of hesitation on his face.
"Young master, you might want to come out and see this."
It was not like Collin to speak with such hesitation and that made Rin immediately get up and follow him out. The butler took him toward the holding cells where Rin noticed the problem.
The two criminals had somehow gotten out of their cells and tried to run away. But they had not met a kind fate.
Reina was kneeling down in front of the dead pair and checking on them. Rin immediately knelt beside her and asked her what was wrong.
She noticed Rin but chose to finish her investigation before speaking.
"These two died by monster attack. It seems like they somehow got their door open and then decided to make a run for it, but failed. We don’t need to look into this anymore."
’Is it only me or is Reina’s choice of words...odd? It’s as if she’s hiding something.’
Rin looked at Reina for answers, but her lips were shut tight. She was not going to say anything more regarding this topic.
’I guess I will have to try and get the truth out of her later.’
Rin sighed and gestured for Collin to clear out the area. They were still under monster attacks and things would only get more troublesome. Rin needed to prepare for what could happen.
So he went back to his office and got started on weapon enhancement. He needed to gain enlightenment soon and raise his skill level before the next task and it was because of one very important reason- he was starting to run out of funds.
That’s right!
His account that had once seemed infinite had finally started to see a dent. And once this happened, it wouldn’t take long before it completely ran dry.
__________
"Everyone, there is no need to panic. Let’s head back to our posts and ensure such a thing does not happen again."
Collin immediately took charge of the situation and no one dared to speak back to him. The head butler gave off a feeling that made it impossible to even question him.
’Where did Rin even find such a person? He feels like he’s from the mafia...but somehow worse. I just can’t put my finger on what it is about him that puts me off.’
Speaking of being put off...there was something off about the way they died. Reina had not told Rin about the bullet wounds that the criminals suffered from before they died.
Reina did not do this for any sentimental reason, but simply chose not to say this because she did not want Rin to worry.
She could even guess the culprit based on the time these criminals had died.
"What’s wrong? Have you gotten attached to these dead bodies? Perhaps, you would like to join them?"
Shelly asked softly from her side. The pink-haired killer (Reina was sure of this now) had a smile on her face. But that smile did not reach her empty eyes.
"Will you kill me the same way you killed these people if I accept your offer?"
Reina asked and Shelly’s smile stiffened at her accusation.
"Excuse me, but are you accusing me of killing these criminals?"
"Accusing? Hardly! I am just stating a fact. The more important question is- who did you team up with to cause such a mess? Was it Teressa?"
Shelly’s smile did not falter, but her words gained a slight edge.
"Are you going to tell Rin about this?"
Reina should tell Rin all about this and expose Shelly and her facade. Rin deserved to know the real face of his soft-looking childhood friend....but...
"I am going to keep your secret this time. Rin is already stressed with all his work and I don’t want to add to that load. You should consider yourself lucky that I am such an understanding person."
Reina stood back up and smiled at Shelly. But Shelly did not return the favor.
"Well, you should consider yourself lucky that I am in a good mood. You will not be in any trouble as long as you decide to stay out of my way. But if you try to come between me and Rin, I will deal with you personally."
Shelly threatened but Reina refused to be intimidated.
"Well, since Rin is a person and not an object, he can make the decision for himself. As for my closeness with Rin, you’ll just have to deal with it. Now, before you attack me, just remember that Rin needs me for medical reasons. Kill me only if you are sure you will be able to face the consequences for your actions."
