Chapter 90: Heart Race
"You’re sure this thing would help us?" Quill held the vial in his hands. The dense red liquid shimmered with the shade of blood.
Carter nodded, "I’m positive. However, that’s Nina’s vial. Your vial is over there."
Nina picked up Quill’s vial and examined it. They both looked exactly the same. "What’s the difference?"
"I made the two vials based on your vitals. Your blood is different from his blood and your bodies are also different. To maintain the smallest amount of risk and highest chance of success, the potion must be designed individually for each person."
"Where’s my vial?" Nicholas scratched his head.
Nicholas was that one slave that passed Carter’s test just before he left for Corrupted Corps. There was another slave but Nina and Quill didn’t trust him so they had quietly got rid of the man.
The other slave had very questionable moral and actions. He was seen trying to steal something from the Caine’s Mansion, leading to his ’disqualification.’
In the time Carter disappeared, there were three more batches of Cyber Slaves sending to this world. All of them were captured by Hexilia’s government. Because Carter wasn’t here to remove their Cyber Cores, they were summoned back to Cyber Runner once 60 days passed. Their fates were unknown.
"You’re still too weak, Nick." Quill said. "You couldn’t even control your heart rate yet."
"Aw, come on." Nicholas sighed but he didn’t protest no more. Than man knew his place well. "Then I’m going to go train. Best of luck, you two."
Nicholas left.
A few nurses and doctors went inside the laboratory. This laboratory was built within the Metabolic Institute.
They put all kind of patches and measurements on Nina and Quill.
"I have a feeling like we are being experimented on..." Nina said. This felt too familiar to Cyber Runner’s tactics.
Carter smiled, "Do you want to stop, Miss Chekhova? Mr. Caine has said that you do not need to proceed if you don’t want to do it."
Nina sighed. "No. I have to. The only way to control my own life is to have more power."
"Well said, Miss Chekhova."
Quill nodded along.
"I don’t know how to use these machines. Please take care of them for me." Carter told the medical staffs.
"Don’t worry, Dr. Frankenstein. We will take care of it."
And the experiment began. Nina and Quill chugged the Heart Race Potion down.
They lay down on the white beds. Their blood pressure went up immediately, their hearts faster, and they began to sweat uncontrollably.
To avoid them from overheating, both Nina and Quill only very minimal clothes. Nina with a bikini and Quill with only a pair of shorts on him. Their skin glistened because of their sweat.
They began to breathe heavily.
"Control your heart rate and breathing. Try to feel it. Metabolism Manipulation is in your hands!"
Nina’s heart worked over time. Adrenaline flooded into her system, Epinephrine filled her blood.
"Epinephrine is exceeding normal level. 9,900... 9,910... 9,930... 9,970... 10,020... Epinephrine exceeds 10,000 pictograms..." One of the doctors said.
And the number kept rising and rising. The discomfort within Nina and Quill kept rising. Their bodies screamed, not of pain, but energy.
All the nutrition and stored energy were burned. Nina and Quill trembled uncontrollably.
"28,000... 28,500... 29,000... Epinephrine is reaching deadly level... It has exceeded 30,000 pictograms." The doctor kept announcing.
Nina and Quill had officially crossed over to Awaken Adrenaline level. But they couldn’t control. Their bodies felt like it wanted to explode.
Blood leaked out of Nina and Quill’s nose.
"We need to raise their Epinephrine level! Or else they would die!" A doctor shouted.
A nurse grabbed a syringe but Carter stopped her. "No. Stopping now would ruin their chances of becoming an Awaken."
Carter approached the two of them and tore all the medical strings and equipment away.
"Awaken Adrenaline is purely energy. How can you control it lying in the bed like this? Stand up. Use it." Carter said.
Nina and Quill jumped up. Their bodies were still agitated because of the excess energy.
Carter pointed to a direction, "The training ground is that way."
A pulse ran through Nina and Quill. Something was activated in them. They bolted away at the same time in an inhuman speed. Their bodies became blurs in the air.
They both broke the wooden floorboards of where they once stood.
A doctor fell on his butt. "What happened?"
"Why don’t we go take a look?" Carter smiled.
Nina and Quill had gone to their usual training room. Nicholas was doing his usual laps when the two mad people rushed in.
Quill took laps around the court without catching a breath. His body cut through the air and caused a high-pitched noise.
Nina punched the sandbag hanging by the pole. Each punch rumbled the entire place.
"What in God name..." A doctor adjusted his glasses.
Carter smiled. "You almost did it. The rising is accomplished. But there is also the lowering."
The skinny Dr. Frankenstein sat down in the middle of the court. He watched as Nina and Quill burned through their system for the entire day. They had stored too much energy for the last six months and had no place to waste.
They had it now.
The sun was lowering. Nina and Quill finally calmed down. They went to Carter.
"We..." Nina breathed heavily.
"We did it!" Quill shouted. The man jumped up. His jump reached almost five meters in the air before landing.
Then they collapsed. The doctors and nurses caught them.
"Watch over them. Make sure they have proper nutrition." Carter said.
"Yes, Dr. Frankenstein."
Nina and Quill successfully achieved Awaken Adrenaline. They should also have Metabolism Manipulation. Now all he needed to do was wait.
’Once I make more Superhuman, even if something was to happen to this place, there would be people that could protect it. Instead of the shit show that happened when I’m gone.’
With the new achievement in Superhuman, Carter was finally ready to leave for the East Continent.
