Chapter 108: Preparations for a summit.
By the time Sienna rose in the morning, Elias was gone. He proved to be a very efficient beast man because the privatization of the beach started immediately. Residents actually welcomed it with joy. The construction of the wall started at around mid-day, that very day.
It took a week for the entire cottage residential area to be sealed behind transparent bricks. Finally, Sienna was back to enjoying privacy. What she loved even more was the way wall shimmered, catching the sunlight, and scattering it into rainbow fragments.
But that intertribal summit could not be avoided. A royal decree had arrived three days ago, declaring the beach the designated venue for the event! As the wife of the Fox Lord, in whose city the event was to be held, she was considered the hostess.
Elias had not confessed that the idea had been his own, but only at the persistent request of other Lords who were using this opportunity to take a holiday at the cost of the royal family. Instead, he let her rage and talked crap about the king all the while arranging a set of cottage residents for the beast lords, safely away from their home.
The summit was only a day away. Preparations consumed the household. Sienna, determined to prove that she could do the job Lady Cadelaria thought she couldn’t was involved in everything. At the moment, she was sitting at the beach with Queen Serenya, who had arrived that morning to go over details.
They sat beneath a wide parasol, the sand around them patrolled by fox and lion guards in gleaming armor. Lunch was spread out on a low table: platters of grilled fish, baskets of butter rolls and steaming buns and pitchers of fruit wine. The twins, Ali and Eli lounged nearby. As usual, Ali’s eyes sparkled at every dish while Eli pretended to nap but secretly spied for his father.
Sienna lifted a glass, squinting at the paper in her hands. "This is the food menu for the the three day summit. If it was just the Lords, I would not be stressed but we will be feeding royals too. If we don’t feed you well, your lot will complain."
Queen Serenya nodded agreeably. "We do have an expensive palate. I have noticed a lot of soups that I don’t think are necessary. The biggest percentage of the Lords are meat eaters. Increase the meat and fish varieties. Since we are close to the sea, expand the sea food menu. Beast Lords from the North have a preference for sea food because it is rare where they come from. For the Lords from the South, arrange more fruits."
Sienna muttered, "More sea food, more fruits. No fancy desserts."
"Noooo.." Ali cried out, "Mama, we need desserts. Sweet and sour candy, crunchy outside, soft inside!" Her eyes gleamed with foodie passion. "I will test taste every batch for you."
Sienna groaned. "You will eat every bath. more like. But fine. We will include the desserts for certain foxes with a sweet tongue. Candied strawberries, apples or something like it."
Ali clapped her hands. "Yes."
Without opening his eyes, Eli said, "Papa says you should eat less candy or your teeth will all fall out."
Sienna narrowed her eyes. "Stop spying on us Elijah, I know that you are reporting everything I say to your father."
The little boy opened his eyes. He grinned, unrepentant. "Well, I wouldn’t have to report anything if there was nothing to report. If you are going to rot Ali’s teeth, I have to tell him."
Sienna threw a bun at him. He caught it mid-air, triumphant.
Queen Serenya cleared her throat. "Food settled." She raised her hand slightly. "Oh, keep the alcoholic beverages on a low. A lot of beast lords have grudges against each other so we have fights breaking out every year. Add wine and claws fly before the summit even starts." She lowered her hand. "Now, the seating arrangements."
Sienna had already arranged it with Timothy, but she knew the Queen would make changes according to inside information.
"The tiger lord is seating too close to the wolf lord. They will claw at each other because of a recent falling out in their younger generation. A love affair gone wrong. If we put the eagle lord near the snake lord, someone will be killed. And Beast gods forbid we put the wolf lord even three feet away from the sheep lord. That would be.....disastrous."
Sienna twisted her lips thoughtfully. "I was trying to mix predator and prey.."
"Shush." Queen Serenya whispered rapidly. "We do not use those terms anymore. Not since we left the woods and became civilized. Even though we all get along, we still have old grudges that are silent. Change the arrangement to a friendly one. Beast Lords who like each other should be sat close to each other."
Sienna leaned back, tapping her chin. "It is the most oblivious solution. But, it doesn’t exactly say diplomacy. It looks lazy. Maybe we should have them spin a bottle and decided randomly. Or, we blindfold them, play a song, and where it stops is where one sits."
Ali clapped her hands. "Like musical chairs. Mama, I will play the drum!"
Eli raised his voice. "Papa said just sit them according to what uncle Timothy suggested. It is good for diplomacy and neutrality. If friends sit together, they will play and talk, instead of focusing on important matters."
Sienna threw another bun his way.
Eli caught it, ate it up in three bites and rolled around in the sand.
Queen Serenya shrugged. "Let’s do that. It is likely that Elias reached out to them and asked for their opinions. That man is very thorough." She tapped the long dinner table in the dining arrangement. "You have to make it smaller tables. Last year, one of the translators said the wrong thing and the Leopard lord went on rampage that ended in a food fight. The table was tipped over and everyone didn’t have lunch."
Sienna shuddered. "Smaller tables it is. I won’t have my food wasted."
Eli raised his voice, "Papa says..."
Sienna leaned down, eyes flashing. "Tell your papa to call me if he has an opinion. You are not his mouthpiece Elijah Veythar. And if you are, you are an annoying one."
The boy grinned, already plotting his next report of whatever he didn’t approve. The listening device in his ear blinked, sending Sienna’s words to Elias.
The afternoon wore on, the parasol casting shade over their two lady council, one cub with an endless appetite and another who insisted on sharing the never ending opinions of his father.
Finally, the reached the last and most important part of the summit: entertainment!
