Chapter 107: The desire for privacy.
Night fell after one round of preparing canned tomatoes, twenty cans in total. After putting the children to bed, Sienna took a bath under the covers. Her body thanked her because every bone seemed to cry out in relief for the opportunity to finally set down.
Just ten minutes after she rested, Elias slid into bed, creeping closer to her than he had ever done. Usually, they kept a respectful distance, but not tonight He had come with one intention: to finish the paperwork from that morning.
But Sienna suddenly sat up, and crossed he legs, facing him with the impatience of a wife had so much on her mind.
"Something has got to be done. Do you know how many outsiders showed up at my gates today?" she demanded, her voice sharp enough to slice through the night air. "Three merchants showed up to buy fish. I don’t sell fish! Then a couple of teenage fox girls came over to hang out! When did my home turn into the fox hang out club? Don’t get me started on the Amberis family. They think they can just swim up to the coastline and knock on my gates. You will love this__three white snake beast men came over pretending to check on Mija. They just wanted to bring her some personal items but the guards caught them stealing our chicken. When they were caught, they claimed that they were just hoping to take some pictures with the chicken! This is not a public zoo!"
Elias’s lips twitched. "Sienna...."
"No, don’t ’Sienna’ me in that tone," she snapped, jabbing at finger at him. "I can take blame for the mers, but you are responsible for the white snakes. I missed my afternoon nap. And I have been told to expect a royal visit in a few days or weeks. Oh, and there is that inter-tribal meeting, apparently it is going to be held at the beach. This means more pompous royals and outsiders with greedy eyes."
Elias sighed, sliding closer, his hand brushed against her shoulder. "You are too tense, Let me___"
She swatted his hand away. "Tense? Of course I am tense! How can I not be, when our supposed private beach has become a tourist attraction? I was promised privacy when I bought this property. Do you know what privacy means? It means no one barging in with banners and trumpets, demanding VIP treatment. It means no one setting up picnic mats on our sand."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sienna, it is night. The waves are calm..."
"Night or day, calm or unruly waves, the problem remains!" she interrupted, her voice rising. "I want solutions. How do we make the beach private? Do we build a wall? Dig a moat? Post more guards around with scary weapons? Or maybe we should fish for crabs and train them to pinch intruders until they flee?"
Elias’s composure cracked for a moment, a faint chuckle escaping his lips. "You want to train crabs to pinch strangers!"
She shrugged, glaring. "Don’t laugh. I am serious. You are fox Lord and this is your city. Surely you can freeze the shoreline, make it too slippery for outsiders to walk on. Or, you can limit the number of people that can stroll through this cottage residential area."
He leaned closer again, his breath warm against her ear. "Sienna, must we discuss all this right now? There are....other matters I wish to attend to."
But she was restless. "Other matters? Like what? My matter is the only matter. I want peace. I want safety. I want privacy. I want Ali to play at he beach without being worried that a stranger is going to carry her off. I want to sit on the sand without strangers walking up to me and asking me to take pictures with them while holding a pan."
Elias’s jaw tightened. Maybe, if she used her guards as she was supposed to, strangers would not be reaching her. But if he said this, she would sulk. And, he was not in the mood to see her sulk. He reached out again, this time pulling her into his arms despite her protests. "Sienna, enough. These are all things we can talk about in the morning. But tonight, let’s focus on more important matters. I want you."
Sienna wriggled free, her face flushed. Not from romance, but indignation. "You want me? Apparently you are not the only one. Lately, everyone wants me. If you truly want me, help me solve this problem. How do we keep that inter-tribal summit thing away? How do we keep outsiders from trampling the fox statue my daughter built with sand?"
Elias’s patience thinned. His eyes, sharp as winter frost, narrowed. "You are an impossible woman."
"And you are an evasive man!" she shot back. "Stop trying to distract me with intimacy, it won’t work. For all we know, if I let you kiss me, some stranger will show up at the window to watch."
"Do you think all the guards I have here are for show?" He asked.
Silence fell between them, broken only by the crash of waves outside. Elias stared at her, his expression unreadable. Sienna tapped her fingers on the pillow, waiting for an answer. Finally, he exhaled, long and weary.
"Fine," he said. "We will build a wall."
Sienna blinked. "A wall?"
"Yes. A wall with a shield, like the kind used by the royal family and my estate. It doesn’t ruin your view of the beach, and outsiders cannot get inside. I will put one over over our compound, and another over the cottage residences as a whole. In addition, I will put guard posts on four ends of the area, everyone that goes in or out must be identified. Satisfied?"
Her eyes lit up. "That....that might actually work." She laid down finally, excitement replacing her irritation. We have to put up a sign that clear identifies this area as a private beach. And I am not abandoning my crab idea. I will raise those crabs and make them pinch strangers. On the sign, instead of saying ’beware of dogs,’ we say ’beware of crabs.’
Elias groaned, collapsing onto the bed. "You win, Sienna. You always win."
Sienna smirked triumphant. "Of course I do. Now about the guards....."
"No more," Elias interrupted, covering his face with one hand. "I give up. You are worse than any fox elder in a board meeting. At least I can shut them up with a single glare. You on the other hand, I can’t stop you. I think I have found my weakness, it is you. Let’s go to sleep before you give me another mental break."
She wanted to ask when the wall or shield building would begin.
But, he covered her face with a tail. "No more, I beg you."
