Chapter 670 - 669, Shall We Try?_1
Nakula glanced at the empathetic orc: "We will wait for three more days. If they haven’t emerged by then, we will stop waiting and head straight back to prepare food for the winter."
The Land of Death had left an indelible shadow on Nakula, the empathetic orc, and the orc members of the Nacha Tribe: a shadow, they feared, would linger for their entire lifetime.
...
"Clan Leader, should we keep moving forward?"
With a wooden stick in hand, Bowman tentatively tested the solidity of the ground ahead while moving forward with utmost caution.
The Cat Beast perched on his shoulder gave a nod, looking back at the tribesmen with resolve, "We must go on. Be careful, do not rush. Use the wooden sticks to feel your way. As long as we get out of this Land of Death, we can all return safely to the tribe."
Hearing these words from the Shaman, the orcs gritted their teeth and continued to cautiously move forward.
"Shaman, will the orcs from the Nacha Tribe catch up with us?" Bowman worriedly asked.
The Cat Beast swatted him on the back of his head sternly: "You focus on guiding us. I don’t want to die prematurely."
It then added, "I don’t know. But the screams we just heard probably indicated that some of the beasts from their tribe were swallowed by the quicksand. I’m not sure if they will continue to chase us."
Bowman tightened his grip on the wooden stick: "Then we should pick up our pace."
The Cat Beast swatted him again: "We have been in here longer than them, and they just lost a clansman, they will surely be extra cautious or may have already retreated. Be mindful of your steps, we won’t have the time to save you if you fall."
Relieved upon hearing the Shaman’s analysis, Bowman and the Gru Orcs behind him let out a sigh of relief.
In the heart of the Land of Death, a line of beasts was moving forward gingerly and cautiously. At the exit, the orcs from the Nacha Tribe were heartily devouring succulent meat.
Meanwhile, on the edge of Lamu Forest, Ji Nuan and Xiu Yan distanced themselves from the main group and approached the mystical and dangerous part of Kunteng Mountain.
"This is the Land of Death?" Ji Nuan pointed at the marshland shrouded by lush reeds right in front of her.
Xiu Yan nodded: "Yes, there were beasts in the past that tracked their prey here but never came back out. The beasts that went in afterwards to find them also disappeared. I only found out later in Nacha Tribe that the Land of Death is full of quicksands that eat beasts hidden in these tall grasses. Falling in meant getting swallowed up, leaving no trace even of the corpse."
"The Nacha Tribe used to throw convicts in here, but after several occurrences where the guards carrying out the sentence also died, they never did it again."
Ji Nuan curled her lips: "Serves them right, those orcs in the Nacha Tribe. Throwing their kin into a swamp, how could they? They might as well have killed them outright."
"Let’s go in there!" Ji Nuan, looking up at Xiu Yan, was eager to venture forth.
Xiu Yan flatly refused her proposition: "No, it’s too dangerous in there. You said you just wanted to take a look. We still have to catch up with our tribesmen."
Ji Nuan held onto Xiu Yan’s hand: "I have a way to step into the quicksand without sinking. Do you want to try it?"
Xiu Yan remained unmoved: "No, we’re going back now."
Staring at the marshland, Ji Nuan’s adventurous heart wouldn’t let up and she turned again to Xiu Yan: "What if we get prey to test it out?"
