Chapter 163: The True Enemy

The eye inside the Tree of Creation slowly opened.

Darkness spread through the garden like living ink.

Where it passed, flowers turned to ash.

The leaves of the Tree shriveled.

Even the stars above began losing their light.

No one spoke.

For the first time since his journey began, Nathan sensed an enemy with no anger, no hatred, and no desire for revenge.

It simply existed.

Origin took one step forward.

His expression was filled with regret.

"So..."

"...you finally woke."

The eye blinked.

A deep voice echoed from within the Tree.

"I never slept."

"I waited."

The bark split apart.

A massive figure emerged from the trunk.

Its body shifted constantly between shadow and smoke.

Thousands of broken stars floated beneath its skin.

Its face changed every second, becoming someone different each time Nathan looked.

A frightened child.

A grieving mother.

A dying soldier.

A lonely king.

Every face carried the same expression.

Despair.

Halo floated closer to Nathan.

Its silver light flickered uneasily.

[Identity cannot be determined.]

[No beginning detected.]

[No ending detected.]

The creature smiled.

"I have many names."

"It doesn’t matter which one you choose."

Origin lowered his head.

"I called you Oblivion."

The creature laughed.

"You always liked naming things."

Nathan frowned.

"Who is it?"

Origin answered quietly.

"It existed before I created the first universe."

"I found it wandering the endless Void."

"It had already consumed countless realities."

Lucien stared in horror.

"You never told us."

"I wanted to protect you."

Oblivion interrupted.

"No."

"You feared they would seek me."

Its countless faces twisted into smiles.

"They always do."

Nathan stepped forward.

"What do you want?"

Oblivion looked directly at him.

"You."

"Why?"

"Because you are the first Ascendant."

"The first being to create power without taking it from another."

Its eyes glowed.

"If I consume you..."

"...hope itself dies."

Silence settled over the garden.

Harold tightened his grip on his staff.

"So that’s your goal."

Oblivion nodded.

"I don’t hate life."

"I simply return everything..."

"...to silence."

Without warning, black tendrils burst from its body.

They shot toward the floating windows that connected the universes.

One after another...

The windows shattered.

Halo cried out.

[Universe 112 has fallen.]

[Universe 489 has fallen.]

[Universe 8,201 has fallen.]

Nathan watched helplessly as stars vanished from the endless sky.

Entire worlds disappeared without a sound.

Origin closed his eyes in pain.

"I imprisoned it inside the Tree because I could not destroy it."

"It feeds on fear."

"It grows stronger whenever hope fades."

Nathan remembered every battle he had fought.

Every villain.

Every tragedy.

Every sacrifice.

They had all been touched by the same invisible darkness.

Oblivion smiled as if reading his thoughts.

"Yes."

"I whispered into every frightened heart."

"I never forced anyone."

"I simply offered them despair."

Lucien fell to his knees.

"The Recovery Protocol..."

Oblivion nodded.

"My suggestion."

Guardian Zero whispered,

"My endless control..."

"My idea..."

"But inspired by you."

Oblivion smiled again.

"I never needed armies."

"I only needed frightened people."

Nathan finally understood.

This enemy had never conquered worlds through power.

It conquered them by convincing people that hope was meaningless.

Oblivion slowly raised one hand.

The Tree of Creation cracked from its roots to its highest branches.

Origin’s face became pale.

Aether stepped beside his father.

"It’s breaking."

"If the Tree falls..."

Origin finished the sentence.

"...every universe connected to it dies."

Halo projected one final warning.

---

Tree Stability: 9%

Multiversal Collapse Imminent

Estimated Time Remaining: 15 Minutes

---

Nathan looked at his friends.

Then at Elder Song.

Then at Origin.

Finally, he met Oblivion’s countless eyes.

"I’ve beaten despair before."

Oblivion’s laughter echoed through the dying garden.

"No, Nathan."

"You’ve only defeated those who carried me."

Its body expanded until it covered the sky.

"You’ve never faced..."

"...Despair itself."

"You’ve never faced... Despair itself."

Oblivion’s voice rolled across the collapsing Garden of Creation.

The Tree groaned.

Its roots cracked apart as rivers of black corruption spread through the soil.

Leaves fell like dying stars, disappearing before they touched the ground.

Halo’s silver light flashed urgently.

[Tree Stability: 7%]

[Collapse accelerating.]

Nathan took a step forward.

"I’m ending this."

Oblivion smiled.

"You’ve said that before."

Black mist surged from its body and swallowed Nathan.

"Nathan!"

Yelena rushed after him, but Aether caught her arm.

"You can’t."

She struggled against him.

"Let me go!"

"If you enter now..."

"...you’ll only become another prisoner."

The darkness closed around Nathan.

Everything disappeared.

No Tree.

No Origin.

No Halo.

Only silence.

Then...

A small boy appeared.

He couldn’t have been older than eight.

He sat alone beneath a dead tree, hugging his knees.

Nathan frowned.

"Who are you?"

The boy looked up.

His eyes were empty.

"I’m the boy who watched his family die."

The child dissolved into smoke.

A young woman appeared.

She held an infant wrapped in torn cloth.

"I prayed for help."

"No one came."

She vanished.

An old soldier replaced her.

"I won every battle."

"But I lost everyone worth returning to."

More figures emerged.

Thousands.

Millions.

Every one carried a story of loss.

Every one whispered the same words.

"Give up."

"There is no tomorrow."

"Hope always dies."

Nathan finally understood.

Oblivion wasn’t attacking him.

It was drowning him in the despair of countless worlds.

His knees weakened.

The weight of endless sorrow pressed against his heart.

For a brief moment...

He wondered if they were right.

Maybe suffering never truly ended.

Maybe every victory was temporary.

Maybe hope was only another beautiful lie.

A familiar voice broke through the darkness.

"My troublesome disciple..."

Nathan froze.

Elder Song’s voice echoed gently around him.

"Do you remember your first defeat?"

Nathan closed his eyes.

He remembered.

He had failed to save an entire village.

He had blamed himself for months.

Elder Song had found him sitting alone beneath a tree.

Instead of comforting him...

The old master had laughed.

Nathan smiled faintly.

"You said..."

"’If falling once meant the journey was over, no child would ever learn to walk.’"

The darkness trembled.

Another voice followed.

It was Nova.

"Brother..."

"You reached for me when everyone else gave up."

Then Yelena.

"You taught me that our past doesn’t decide our future."

Then Harold.

"Even old men can learn from stubborn students."

Finally...

Halo.

Its voice was stronger than ever.

[Partner.]

[You were never carrying hope alone.]

Silver light appeared in the darkness.

Tiny at first.

Then another.

And another.

Each light became a memory.

Nathan laughing with Elder Song.

Training beside Yelena.

Nova smiling for the first time.

Guardian Zero choosing redemption.

Lucien remembering his true name.

The darkness began to crack.

Oblivion’s voice echoed angrily.

"No..."

"Those memories should break you."

Nathan slowly stood.

"They did."

He smiled.

"But they also made me who I am."

The silver lights merged into a brilliant sun.

The sea of despair retreated.

For the first time...

Oblivion screamed.

Its countless voices cried out together.

"Impossible!"

Nathan looked into the endless darkness.

"I finally understand you."

"You aren’t endless."

"You survive because people believe they’re alone."

He raised his hand.

Silver lightning burst across the void.

"I’ll prove them wrong."

The darkness split apart.

Outside, everyone watched as a beam of silver light erupted from Oblivion’s chest.

Halo gasped.

[He found its heart.]

Oblivion staggered backward for the first time.

A crack spread across its shadowy body.

Not from power.

From hope.

Then Nathan’s voice echoed from within the light.

"Everyone..."

"...lend me your hope."

Across countless universes, people looked toward the sky.

Without knowing why...

They reached out and billions of tiny lights began flying toward Nathan.

The lights crossed galaxies.

They traveled through broken worlds, silent kingdoms, forgotten battlefields, and peaceful villages.

Each light carried a single wish.

A father praying for his daughter’s future.

A child refusing to give up after losing everything.

A healer saving one last patient.

A soldier lowering his weapon instead of striking.

None of them knew Nathan.

Yet every one of them chose hope.

The silver lights flowed into his outstretched hand, forming a radiant sphere that pulsed like a living heart.

Halo hovered beside him, its crystal brighter than ever before.

[Hope Resonance increasing.]

[One percent... ten percent... thirty-eight percent...]

Outside the void, Origin watched with tears in his eyes.

"So this is the answer..."

Aether smiled faintly.

"It was never about greater power."

"It was about shared courage."

Lucien slowly stood, watching the countless lights stream across the multiverse.

"I spent ages trying to control every soul..."

"...yet he united them without giving a single command."

Nearby, Guardian Zero let out a quiet laugh.

"I searched for the perfect system."

He closed his eyes.

"And all along..."

"...the strongest system was trust."

Inside the sea of darkness, Oblivion staggered backward as the silver light continued to grow.

For the first time since before creation, its countless shifting faces showed fear instead of despair.

"No..."

"You cannot unite them."

"They will betray one another again."

"They will fight."

"They will fall."

Nathan nodded.

"You’re right."

"They’ll make mistakes."

"They’ll hurt each other."

"They’ll stumble."

He smiled with quiet confidence.

"But they’ll also stand back up."

The sphere of hope expanded until it illuminated the entire void.

Every shadow retreated before its light.

Oblivion raised both arms and released a tidal wave of darkness, trying to extinguish the growing radiance.

The two forces collided with a deafening roar that echoed across every universe.

The impact shattered mountains, split the void apart, and sent ripples through the Tree of Creation itself.

When the blinding light faded, Nathan was still standing.

The silver sphere hovered above his head, untouched.

Then, for the first time in endless ages, a single tear fell from one of Oblivion’s countless eyes.

"I..."

"...had forgotten what hope looked like."
