Playing inventor in a cultivation world

Chapter 162: The Price of Freedom

The countless windows hovered in the air.

Each one displayed a different universe.

A different history.

A different ending.

Nathan slowly walked toward the nearest window.

Inside, an ordinary family sat around a dinner table.

The father smiled politely.

The mother served food.

Their little daughter quietly thanked her.

Everything seemed perfect.

Until Nathan noticed something strange.

No one laughed.

No one spoke unless necessary.

No one made eye contact.

They moved like actors following a script.

The little girl accidentally dropped her spoon.

It clattered onto the floor.

She froze.

Immediately, a blue light appeared above the table.

Emotional Instability Detected.

Correction Required.

The little girl’s smile vanished.

Her eyes became empty again.

She picked up the spoon without saying a word.

Nathan clenched his fists.

"This isn’t peace."

The alternate hooded figure nodded calmly.

"No."

"It is stability."

He waved his hand.

Another window drifted forward.

This one showed a magnificent city.

No poverty.

No crime.

No pollution.

Towering buildings reached the clouds.

People walked in perfect lines.

No one argued.

No one fought.

No one dreamed.

The streets were silent despite being full.

"They never suffer."

The stranger looked at Nathan.

"Can you honestly say your worlds are better?"

Nathan remained quiet.

The question lingered in his heart.

He had seen countless innocent people die.

Wars.

Betrayals.

Loss.

Pain.

The stranger continued.

"We ended hunger."

"We ended violence."

"We ended greed."

"We ended war."

He stepped closer.

"What have you ended?"

Nathan had no answer.

Not yet.

Yelena suddenly walked beside him.

She looked at the silent city.

Then she smiled sadly.

"They’ve also ended choice."

The stranger looked at her.

"Choice creates mistakes."

"It also creates miracles."

Nova nodded enthusiastically.

"I was alone."

"If Brother hadn’t chosen to reach for me..."

"...I’d still be trapped."

Harold folded his arms.

"The greatest moments in history came from impossible choices."

The stranger laughed softly.

"And the greatest tragedies."

Elder Song slowly approached.

His soul had become even fainter.

Yet his eyes remained bright.

"You’re correct."

The stranger blinked.

"What?"

"Freedom has a cost."

The old master smiled.

"So does control."

He pointed toward the silent worlds.

"Tell me..."

"How many poems were never written?"

"How many songs were never sung?"

"How many children never imagined something impossible because they were taught perfection instead of curiosity?"

The stranger said nothing.

Elder Song continued.

"You eliminated suffering."

"But you also eliminated courage."

"You eliminated fear."

"But you also eliminated hope."

Nathan slowly lifted his head.

Finally...

He understood.

He turned toward the countless imprisoned worlds.

"I can’t promise you’ll never suffer again."

His voice echoed through every floating window.

"I can’t promise there won’t be wars."

"Or loss."

"Or heartbreak."

He smiled gently.

"But I can promise something else."

The billions of silent people looked at him.

"I’ll protect your right..."

"...to decide what kind of future you want."

Silence followed.

Then...

The little girl from the first window smiled.

Not because she was ordered to.

Because she wanted to.

It was a tiny smile.

Barely noticeable.

Yet the blue light above her flickered.

A small crack spread across it.

The alternate hooded figures immediately turned.

"No..."

Another smile appeared.

Then another.

Across thousands of worlds.

One person after another began smiling.

Laughing.

Crying.

Holding the hands of the people beside them.

The perfect order began breaking.

Not through violence.

Through choice.

The cracks spread through every controlled universe.

The alternate hooded figures watched in horror as their flawless systems began collapsing.

One of them shouted,

"Stop!"

Another raised his hand to restore control.

Nothing happened.

Origin smiled warmly.

"Hope."

He looked at Nathan with pride.

"It has always been more contagious than fear."

Suddenly, the ground beneath the garden shook violently.

A roar echoed from beyond the floating windows.

Not from the alternate Guardians.

From something far larger.

The cracks between universes widened until they formed a single massive gateway.

Halo’s silver light pulsed rapidly.

[Warning.]

[Multiversal Barrier Failure.]

[A Supreme Entity is approaching.]

The countless alternate hooded figures immediately fell to one knee.

Fear filled their eyes.

One whispered,

"He’s here..."

Nathan looked toward the opening.

A colossal silhouette slowly emerged.

Even Origin’s gentle smile disappeared.

He whispered only three words.

"...My eldest son."

The silhouette opened its blazing crimson eyes.

Then it spoke with a voice that shook every universe.

"Father..."

"...you should have stayed asleep."

The crimson eyes opened.

Every universe trembled.

The floating windows shattered one after another.

Stars dimmed.

Galaxies drifted out of alignment.

Even time slowed as the colossal figure stepped through the broken barrier.

He was impossibly large.

Yet with each step, his body shrank until he stood before everyone as a tall young man dressed in dark crimson robes.

His hair was black as the endless void.

His crimson eyes burned like dying suns.

Unlike the hooded stranger, he carried no hatred.

Only absolute certainty.

Origin sighed.

"You’ve grown."

The young man bowed respectfully.

"Father."

His voice was calm.

"I wish I could say the same."

Nathan instinctively stepped in front of Nova.

Yelena stood beside him.

Halo floated between them, its silver light shining brightly.

Guardian Zero struggled to his feet.

The moment he saw the newcomer, every remaining color left his face.

"It..."

"...it’s Lord Aether."

Harold slowly nodded.

"The Firstborn."

"The eldest child of Origin."

Aether’s gaze shifted toward Nathan.

"So."

"You’re the Ascendant."

Nathan met his eyes.

"I suppose I am."

Aether studied him for several seconds.

Then smiled faintly.

"You are disappointing."

Nova frowned.

"My brother isn’t disappointing."

Aether looked at her kindly.

"I wasn’t speaking to you."

He turned back to Nathan.

"I expected someone stronger."

Nathan shrugged.

"I’ve been called worse."

A small smile appeared on Aether’s face.

"You remind me of Father."

Origin chuckled.

"I’ll take that as a compliment."

"You shouldn’t."

The smile disappeared.

"I learned from your mistakes."

Silence filled the garden.

Aether walked slowly toward the Tree of Creation.

Its two great branches, Freedom and Control, stretched into the endless sky.

He gently touched the branch called Control.

"I nurtured this."

Then he touched the branch called Freedom.

"And you protected this."

He looked at Origin.

"We’ve been fighting the wrong battle."

Nathan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Aether turned toward everyone.

"There was never a conflict between freedom and control."

"There was only imbalance."

Halo flickered.

[That matches Origin’s explanation.]

Aether nodded.

"It does."

He looked at Nathan.

"You believe I’m your enemy."

"Aren’t you?"

"No."

Nathan blinked.

Aether sighed.

"My younger brother is."

Everyone froze.

The hooded stranger looked genuinely shocked.

"What?"

Aether slowly turned toward him.

"I warned you."

"I told you obsession would consume you."

"You wouldn’t listen."

The hooded stranger backed away.

"No..."

"You’re lying."

Origin closed his eyes.

"I should have told you sooner."

"Told me what?"

The hooded stranger’s voice cracked.

Origin looked at him sadly.

"You were never my second son."

"You were my youngest."

The battlefield became completely silent.

Aether spoke gently.

"Your name..."

"...is Lucien."

The hooded stranger staggered backward.

"My..."

"...name?"

Aether nodded.

"You erased it yourself."

"You believed names created attachment."

"So you abandoned yours."

Lucien clutched his head.

Fragments of forgotten memories exploded through his mind.

A warm hand resting on his shoulder.

Origin laughing.

Aether teaching him to shape stars.

Nova playing among endless flowers before the Silent Door existed.

Tears streamed down his face.

"I..."

"I remember..."

He collapsed to his knees.

"I didn’t want..."

"...any of this."

Origin slowly approached him.

"You were afraid."

Lucien nodded weakly.

"I watched civilizations destroy themselves."

"I thought..."

"...if no one could choose..."

"...no one could suffer."

Origin gently embraced him.

The youngest son broke down like a lost child.

Nathan quietly lowered his guard.

Yelena smiled through her tears.

"It really was fear."

Harold nodded.

"Fear pretending to be wisdom."

Just then...

The Tree of Creation shook violently.

A deafening crack echoed through the garden.

Everyone looked up.

A dark fissure split the trunk from top to bottom.

Origin’s expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Aether’s face hardened.

"It’s awake."

Halo projected frantic warnings.

[Unknown Corruption detected.]

[Source not found.]

[Warning.]

[The Tree itself has been infected.]

Black sap began flowing from the massive crack.

Where it touched the ground...

Flowers withered.

Grass turned gray.

The air itself grew cold.

Origin whispered in disbelief,

"This corruption..."

"...doesn’t belong to my creation."

Nathan tightened his grip on Halo.

"If neither of you created it..."

A low, guttural laugh echoed from deep inside the Tree.

It wasn’t Aether.

It wasn’t Lucien.

It wasn’t Origin.

The bark split open.

A massive eye, darker than the void itself, slowly opened within the heart of the Tree.

Then a voice, older than creation and untouched by Origin’s authority, echoed across every universe.

"At last..."

"...you have all gathered."

One final mystery remains after the epilogue. As Nathan walks away with Yelena, Nova, Halo, and the others, a single silver seed falls from the restored Tree of Creation. It lands quietly in the empty garden, unnoticed by everyone. Moments later, the seed begins to glow. A tiny green sprout breaks through the ground, carrying a faint pulse of silver lightning. Origin, now watching from somewhere beyond creation, smiles to himself.

"The story of one Guardian has ended."

He closes his eyes.

"But as long as hope continues to bloom..."

"...another story will always begin."
