Chapter 39: Hunting
The next morning, Seraph woke up early and went to find Sylvia.e was new in the sect and needed her guidance on some matters.
"Senior Sister, do you have an idea where I can find Black-furred wolves?"
Standing next to girl, Seraph appeared energetic as he asked questions.
It was very early in the morning, so Sylvia had a disgruntled expression on her face.
"This is why you made me wake up this early?"
She growled, making Seraph’s smile turn awkward. The boy hurriedly apologized, earning a sigh from her.
"You got a mission related to them, right? You can find them in the Junlun Forest near the Summer Peak."
Seraph’s eyes brightened, and he nodded thankfully. He turned around, preparing to leave. Suddenly, he paused. Turning his head slightly, he asked with a strained smile.
"Is there uh... any means of transportation?"
"Transportation?" Sylvia smirked. "What? Do you think you’re a merchant or something? What are your legs for?"
"I knew it."
Seraph groaned, immediately falling into a light jog down the mountain. Although it might have seemed like the distance wasn’t much when they arrived through Elder Wang’s boat, he knew it had to be very far.
’How long will it take me to reach the base of the Soul Peak, then the base of the Summer Peak?’
Some time later, he finally arrived at his destination. Reaching the base of the Soul Peak had lasted him five hours, and the sun was already up.
He had to stop a few times to catch his breath before continuing.
"Such a pain in the ass. Is this how it’s going to be every time I have a mission?"
Clicking his tongue, he surveyed the surroundings. All he could see were tall trees with red leaves and wild grasses scattered across the terrain, forming a dense forest.
["The Black-furred wolves should be living inside this forest, right?"] Halo asked.
Exhaling tiredly, Seraph rolled his eyes. "Stop asking foolish questions. We both know this is the Junlun Forest Senior Sister Sylvia mentioned."
The system went silent, unable to refute him. Holding his spear in his hand, he took a breath and dashed into the forest.
’I’ve never seen red leaves before. They look strangely beautiful.’
As he passed by, he examined the trees, noting their difference from regular trees, and the unusual heat permeating the forest.
["Perhaps they have little sparks of fire element within them."] Halo commented thoughtfully.
’Maybe.’
Seraph agreed. After all, this was close to the Summer Peak of the Soul Cross Sect. Running through the forest, he tried to find a Black-furred wolf. Unfortunately, his first encounter with a spirit beast wasn’t his target.
’Tch.’
Blocking his path was a python with hardened crimson scales. Seraph wouldn’t have noticed it if it hadn’t come down from the tree it was hangiy.
Still, Seraph couldn’t afford to underestimate the enemy. Judging from its aura, it was at the Initial Advanced Stage just like him.
Taking a stance, he didn’t waste a second before attacking the beast. His spear swept forward in a clean arc, aiming for a neat cleave.
However, the python recoiled, dodging his attack and hissing dangerously.
"What do you think?"
Seraph asked rhetorically, a smirk on his lips. He shot at the beast again, his speed seemingly instantaneous.
This time, the python didn’t retreat. It shot forward, predicting his attack and coiling around his weapon.
Seraph’s attack was stopped, and he was vulnerable to a counterattack.
Perhaps not.
The next moment, he burst with tyrannical strength, completely overpowering the python and smashing it to the ground with his spear.
Before it could recover, Seraph struck it with several wind blades, digging deep wounds into its flesh.
The python hissed and freed itself from his spear, creating some distance between them. Seraph also paused briefly, allowing the tension to simmer.
A few seconds later, they clashed again. The python raised its head, showing off its poisonous fangs and baring them at Seraph.
The boy fearlessly charged forward, leaping off the ground to reach its head.
At the same time, he created wind blades and water blades around them both. The python’s head came flying at him, but he deftly avoided it swallowing me. His spear bit into one of its eyes, making it hiss in pain and anger.
Seraph dropped to the ground, landing property on his feet. He suddenly closed his open hand.
Above him, the previously created wind and water blades closed in on the python, becoming a blender that shredded it endlessly.
Hiss—!
The beast hissed in pain and agony, but was unable to do anything to free itself.
Seraph smiled gently, then tightened his grip. The next moment, the beast was crushed and turned into a mangled mess of flesh and blood.
["Ouu, so cruel. I’m shocked."]
Hearing Halo’s comment, Seraph’s smile faltered. He rolled his eyes, then walked away, ignoring the loot from the corpse.
["Eh? You’re going to ignore that?"]
He shrugged nonchalantly. "Yeah. It’s not everything you chase after, you know."
Jogging around the forest again, he soon found a pack of Black-furred wolves feasting on the carcass of another spirit beast.
The wolves were seven in number, with their alpha having white fur at the back of its neck.
Seraph hid in the distance, studying them carefully.
’I was tasked to get the canines of three Core Advanced Stage wolves. And here, there are seven of them. If I’m right...’
["Four are at the Initial Advanced Stage while the remaining three are at the Core Advanced Stage."]
Halo spoke his mind, helping him complete his thoughts.
Seraph’s rainbow eyes narrowed. ’You’re right. Now... how do I separate them?’
He was perfectly sure that trying to take on the whole pack was a death sentence. He’d be devoured in minutes.
Clicking his tongue, he closed his eyes to think.
’Ah!’
An idea popped in his head, and he decided to execute it. Moving closer, he hid behind a tree and made some animal sounds.
The pack froze, raising their heads from their meal and looking around with sharp glares.
It was obvious they were annoyed at being disturbed.
Seraph went silent, allowing them to resume their meal. Then he changed his location, though he still remained in the perimeter.
Making another animal sound, he made the wolves look up, searching for the annoying creature. After receiving silence for almost a minute, they resumed their meal again.
The next moment, Seraph changed his location, and once again distracted them.
This time, the wolves reacted quickly. Three of them, at the Initial Advanced Stage, all dashed towards the source of the sound.
Sensing them approach, Seraph fell into a sprint.
Sighting him, the wolves chased after him, their angry growls echoing in the distance.
Meanwhile, the remaining wolves stayed behind, consuming the carcass until it was completely stripped of its flesh.
Minutes passed and the three wolves still didn’t return. Sensing that something wasn’t right, the alpha raised its head and howled.
It was trying to call them back.
However, it received no response. If it had a human face, it would have surely frowned.
Just as it raised its head to howl again, the sound of twigs snapping interrupted it.
"No need. They’re dead."
Seraph said flatly, a calm smile on his face. He was covered in blood, looking like a demon from hell. The blood wasn’t his, but belonged to the deceased wolves. One could even see patches of dark fur hanging on his clothes.
Catching the scent of their comrades on him, the remaining wolves howled in sorrow, then dashed straight at him.
Seraph was unfazed, holding his spear straight with a calm smile.
"Fall."
Abruptly, wind blades fell from the sky, striking the wolves mid-charge and granting them mild injuries.
’Tch, this skill is getting outdated.’
Rolling his eyes, he created more wind blades, letting them fall on the beast’s like rain. The alpha was stronger and smarter, so it immediately dived sideways, dodging the attack. Meanwhile, the last remaining wolf at the Initial Advanced Stage was eventually brought down, collapsing to the ground and bleeding heavily. The others simply pushed through.
As they drew close, Seraph moved. His spear rotated in his hands, and he struck at the two wolves that had weathered his attacks.
"Seraphim Spear: First Form—Cyclone."
The spear slashed at their maw, turning it into a bloody mess. Howling in pain, the duo retreated while their alpha came to cover for them.
It landed before Seraph with a thud that shook the ground, then leaped at him.
Seraph raised his weapon defensively, keeping its claws away from him as he was pushed back by its insane strength.
’Great. Now this just makes it harder.’
With his brows creased, Seraph suddenly released a side of the weapon, shifting his body and making the beast unbalanced.
It almost tumbled to the side, but quickly regained its footings.
Seraph straightened, keeping an eye on the other two wolves that were circling him threateningly.
The second round of this hunt was just about to kick off.
