Chapter 91: Fast But Not Furious
Before Lukas could even find a reply to her words, Kaida dashed at him, a knife in each hand.
Two of his wings snapped forward to block the attack, but she noticed the movement immediately, eyes narrowing.
When she was a meter away from him, she planted her foot and launched herself into the sky, jumping over him, and evading his wing barriers at the same time.
Just as she was in the air above him, flipped upside down, she extended one hand down at his exposed head and released a small cone of fire at close range.
The heat was much stronger than the one he’d felt before. Kaida hadn’t been lying. She really had been holding back.
But unfortunately for her, he was faster.
One of his wings snapped up, quickly blocking the attack.
The moment the fire met the wing, Lukas hissed in pain, the wing snapping back a bit from the force of the attack.
Kaida landed behind him, but Lukas had already accounted for that, his fourth wing already moving.
The wing slammed into her torso before she’d even fully touched the ground, the impact sending her skidding back across the arena floor.
She dug her boots in, the friction slowing her down, and came to a stop. She was still standing.
She looked up to see him turn to face her, a smirk on his face.
Lukas knew that if he wanted, he could end this fight now.
All he needed was to activate [Smite], and the divine attack would descend from the sky, hitting harder than whatever Kaida herself was capable of.
He wouldn’t kill the woman, of course. He’d pull his punch just enough for her to be taken care of, but still survive the attack
But he was not going to use the skill here. Definitely not on the first day of matches.
He wanted that skill to remain unknown for as long as possible. A trump card only worked if it could be hidden.
Kaida dashed towards him, this time moving even faster than before.
This time she led with both hands, flames roaring out from her palms in a wide attack that filled the space between them.
He crossed two wings in front of him, the barrier holding against the heat.
His defense was holding. Right until Kaida herself slammed into his wings.
She had used the flames as cover, closing the distance behind them, and the impact of her body against the crossed wings held more force than the fire had.
As she slammed into him, he was sent flying, his boots leaving the ground entirely.
He wrapped himself in all four wings as he went, closing himself off. He bounced once, his defense taking the impact, then unfurled his wing as he sailed in the air, before landing on his feet.
He straightened, bracing himself for another attack, but nothing came.
His eyes widened as he realized he couldn’t see Kaida. His head snapped left, then right, before he realized there was a place he hadn’t looked at before.
His head snapped upwards just in time to see her descend over him, one leg raised in front of her.
The axe kick snapped down towards the top of his skull with all her strength. He knew wouldn’t be able to dodge it fast enough.
His wings snapped up instinctively, crossing above his head.
Then Kaida’s leg slammed into them.
Bam!
It felt like someone had dropped a boulder on him.
The impact sent him down on one knee, the force of the axe kick transmitting through the crossed wings and into his shoulders with enough weight to buckle his legs beneath him.
He shoved up with both wings simultaneously and Kaida was launched backwards, her body rotating into a backflip.
She landed as if the move had been deliberate, but she didn’t pause.
Before she could even fully straighten, her hands snapped towards him as she threw her knives.
The knives blurred through the air, and he dodged them, both knives passing close enough to his head that he could make out the warps in the steel.
She dashed towards him and was already within two meters by the time the knives had passed him, pulling out two new knives from somewhere on her body.
She swiped at him and he leaned back, dodging the attack.
The knives passed in front of his nose, and in the middle of his dodge, he swept his leg forward, catching her by the ankles.
She made a surprised choking sound as her feet left the ground.
Shock filled her face as she fell, but Lukas didn’t care. His fist was already snapping towards her.
Bam!
His punch slammed into her, and she wasn’t flying for the second time, bouncing a few times before stopping.
As she stood, he saw the bruise on her arms. She’d blocked his punch by crossing her arms in front of her.
"Heh." He chuckled.
That was smart.
However, this time, he didn’t wait for her to attack him. He dashed towards her.
Kaida brought her guard up as he drew nearer, her stance adjusted for close quarters.
She still had one knife in her hand, so she stabbed at him, the attack aimed directly for his chest.
He ducked under the attack, his hand closing around her wrist.
His other arm grabbed her by the waist, and before she could process what was happening, he threw her over his shoulder. Not on the floor.
She sailed through the air, before slamming into the red translucent barrier that separated the different arenas. The impact sent the knife in her fingers flying.
Before she could slide down the barrier, Lukas was already there.
He drove his fist into her stomach, driving the air out of her lungs as her back slammed into the barrier again.
But he didn’t stop.
He pulled his arm back, then began punching.
His fists began slamming into her torso, the attacks moving faster than she could block.
The crowd closest to them grew louder, some cheering and others yelling, but he paid them no mind.
Kaida’s arms were moving, trying to defend herself, or find a gap to push him back.
He didn’t give her one.
