As Kaida walked up the little stairs and onto the arena floor, she noticed the smile on Lukas’ face.

She didn’t break her stride, but her head tilted slightly, a frown appearing on her face.

She stopped at her end of the arena, staring at him. "Why are you smiling?" She asked.

"Because I’m finally facing a B-rank opponent," Lukas said. "It’s my third match of the day and it took this long to meet someone finally on my level."

He doubted she was actually on the same level as he was stats wise, but that was a different story entirely.

Kaida stared at him for a few seconds, then she chuckled, a smile coming over her face. The smile wasn’t friendly, but it was fierce.

Her eyes shone with a brightness that had nothing to do with the sun.

She reached up with both hands, bunched up her hair, and pulled it back into a ponytail. "I see."

She looked up, meeting his eyes. "I can see that you mean business, so I’ll give this fight the seriousness that it deserves."

"The last B-rank I faced today was a disappointment," she said, raising her voice slightly. "He didn’t even make me try."

Her grin widened. "Don’t be like him."

"I won’t," Lukas said.

The staff member at the edge of the arena raised a hand, looked between them both, and brought it down.

"Begin."

The moment the word was uttered, Lukas raised his gauntlet and fired.

The beam crossed the arena in a split second, roaring towards his opponent. This was the same opening he’d used in both previous matches.

How would she fare against a concussive beam of fire as a fire user?

But Kaida didn’t move. She simply opened her mouth and inhaled.

The beam shifted direction slightly. It compressed into a smaller beam, and like a tap of water, redirected itself towards a mouth.

It began rushing between her lips, and a few seconds was swallowed whole, the threat ceasing to exist.

Her skin flared a bright red for a brief moment, the heat spreading from her throat out across her neck and cheeks, and then it faded just as quickly.

Steam rose from her shoulders in thin curling wisps. She daintily wiped the corner of her mouth and looked at him.

Then she laughed, as if Lukas had just told a particularly stupid joke.

"You’ll have to do considerably better than that."

Lukas lowered the gauntlet slightly. He wasn’t surprised, exactly.

While he hadn’t expected her to be able to absorb fire, seeing her so it hadn’t been so surprising. He’d watched her fight before after all.

She tilted her head, noticing his lack of surprise. It was as if Lukas was unimpressed, and without even realizing, she began justifying her power to him.

"My class is [Pyromaniac]," she said, beginning to walk towards him like she was taking a stroll.

"My first skill is called [Consume]. And like you just saw, it does what it sounds like."

She opened her palm and small tongues of fire began dancing between her fingers, growing as she walked.

"My second skill is called [Cremation]."

She paused, the smile on her face growing wider.

"What do you think that one does?"

She stopped walking, tilted her head, and stared at him with those bright pink eyes which held an emotion that stood somewhere between amusement and genuine curiosity.

"You were a complete disappointment when it came to the attack," she said. "Let’s find out if defense is more interesting."

She raised her hand, palm forward, and the flames that had been building between her fingers expanded instantly into something considerably less playful.

A roaring column of fire erupted from her outstretched hand and tore across the arena towards him.

Lukas immediately activated [Wing Fortress].

The four wings erupted from his back with a loud flap, the golden feathers glowing beautifully in the afternoon light before they wrapped around him completely.

The wings folded in until every part of his body was covered and he couldn’t even see or hear the arena outside.

A fraction of a second later, the fire slammed into him.

Inside the fortress, the sound of the fire was muffled. All he could hear was a soft roar that felt like standing near a waterfall.

He could feel the attack on his wings, however. There was no pain, but it felt like someone had wrapped a warm blanket around him, and gently pushed against it.

So he stood inside the golden shell and waited.

The pressure continued for thirty seconds, then it stopped.

He immediately unwrapped the wings, and the first thing he saw was a pair of knives heading straight at him.

Before his brain had even processed what was happening, Lukas leaned back. It was just in time as the knives cut through the air, passing just an inch away from his face.

He leapt back, but Kaida didn’t attack. She simply stared at him, both knives in her hands.

When she’d seen the fire didn’t work, she’d made him drop the wings just to attack him with a weapon? She wasn’t just a brute.

"That was some quick thinking," he complemented her, his wings flapping softly behind him.

"And you’ve got quite the defense," Kaida retorted. "Much better than your offense."

She sounded genuinely impressed.

"I’ve never seen wings used like that before." She tilted her head. "But I’m sure I’ll find a way past it."

"You’re welcome to try," Lukas said, chuckling. "I’m quite sure you wouldn’t succeed, but I’m curious to see the attempt."

She laughed at that, before tilting her head to stare at him. "I was holding back so as to not accidentally kill you, but now that you can take it, I’ll be going all out. Prepare yourself."

"I look forward to it."

Her eyes shined. "No man has ever resisted me, pretty boy," she said. "You won’t be the first."

Lukas blinked. "Are you flirting with me right now?"

"Maybe."

"I’d reconsider." He smiled politely. "I’ve got wives who are way more dangerous than I am. And they’re very... territorial."

Kaida stared at him. Then she grinned wider than before.

"Wives? That sounds like fun."
