Chapter 162: Bringing a Classmate Home
Grace Winslow had two peaceful days.
Because of the incident with Wendy Quinn, a few of the girls who had gotten refunds wanted to reorder clothes from her, but Grace Winslow turned them down.
"I might not have as much time to get clothes for everyone in the future, so this will be the last time. For those of you who have already paid, you can come to my house after nine tomorrow morning to pick out what you like." Grace Winslow planned to hand off the clothing resale business in the future. Managing it all by herself was taking up too much of her time.
She would rather use that time to read a couple more books and study.
Time was precious.
She didn’t want to waste a single second of it.
She had earned quite a bit from her resale business recently.
The profits from the clothes she sold were supposed to be split fifty-fifty with Hayley. She did some quick math and realized she had actually made nearly five thousand yuan from the business.
Including Hayley’s share, which she hadn’t sent back yet, she now had almost twenty thousand yuan in cash on hand.
"Grace Winslow, can I place an order now? I missed the last one. I can pay you right away."
"Yeah, yeah, me too! I was planning to buy from you later, but if you’re not going to sell anymore, what am I supposed to do?"
"We’ll see about the future. Mainly, my sister-in-law has her own things to take care of and can’t be buying clothes for everyone every day. I’ll ask her later and see if she’s willing to continue. If she is, I’ll let you all know."
Grace Winslow just smiled and shook her head, not making any firm promises.
When she returned to the dorm, she saw Joanne Chase still buried in her studies. She had been working especially hard lately.
Unlike Grace Winslow, who was juggling several majors with a packed schedule every day, Joanne focused solely on English. Through sheer effort, she had managed to significantly improve her fundamentals recently.
"Grace Winslow, do you know where I can buy a cheap tape recorder? My pronunciation is still a little off, and Mr. Dunn said it would be best to listen to tapes every day to train my ear." Seeing Grace Winslow had returned, Joanne Chase quickly got up, walked over, and asked in a low voice.
Grace Winslow thought for a moment before replying, "You could check out the salvage yard. See if you can find an old or broken one to buy and fix up. It’d be a lot cheaper than buying one from a store."
"Oh, but I don’t know the way, and I’ve never been there before. And as for fixing it... I’m afraid I’d just make it worse. I’ve never had any talent for that kind of thing." Joanne Chase’s shoulders slumped in disappointment at the suggestion.
"I was actually planning to go this weekend anyway. Why don’t you come with me? You don’t have any family here, so you can come home with me after class on Saturday. On Sunday, after everyone has picked out their clothes, you can come with me to the salvage yard to see what we can find."
Grace Winslow still remembered the batch of gold she had unexpectedly found before, which she still hadn’t sold. She was thinking of going to see if she could find some old journals or magazines, so with Joanne Chase needing a tape recorder, it was the perfect opportunity to go together.
"Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for you?" Joanne Chase asked, hesitating.
"If you feel like it’s a bother, you can just help my mom with chores when you get to my place. Besides, my classmates are coming over on Sunday to pick out clothes, and I’m not sure if I can handle it all by myself. If you’re there, you can help me check people off the list and make sure no one takes advantage of the chaos to walk off with my clothes." Grace Winslow patted Joanne Chase’s arm.
Joanne Chase’s eyes lit up at the thought. "Okay, then! I’ll go and help."
Grace Winslow felt a little resigned. Her real intention wasn’t to make Joanne help her.
’But as long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters.’
「Three days passed in the blink of an eye.」
After classes ended on Saturday, Grace Winslow went back to the dorm to pick up Joanne Chase, and the two headed home together.
Joanne Chase was still a bit reserved. "I didn’t bring anything. Is that rude? Will your mom be unhappy?"
After all, back in her village, anyone who showed up at someone’s house just to freeload would be scolded and bad-mouthed for days.
She wasn’t just getting a free meal, but a free place to stay, too. The thought alone made her feel embarrassed.
"Relax. My mom is really easygoing, not the unreasonable type at all. Besides, you’re my friend. I’m sure she’ll be happy to have you. Just treat it like your own home. Help out when you can, eat when it’s time to eat, and you’ll be fine," Grace Winslow said reassuringly, patting Joanne on the arm.
Joanne Chase took a deep breath. "I’m still a little nervous. *Hooo*. I hope your mom won’t dislike me."
When they arrived at Grace Winslow’s house and saw the impressive front gate, Joanne Chase grew even more nervous. "Oh my gosh, Grace! You never told me you lived in such a fancy house! I... I... I feel even more awkward about going in now."
"It’s a rental, it’s not that fancy. Didn’t you hear Wendy Quinn talking about it? My family is from the countryside. My parents were worried about me, and it just so happened that my dad got transferred to Coronet for work, so they came along. We’re just renting this place for convenience. It’s only a few yuan a month." Grace Winslow told a small, white lie.
As expected, Joanne Chase relaxed a little upon hearing this and timidly followed Grace Winslow through the door.
Grace Winslow called into the house, "Mom, I’m home!"
Seeing the clothes drying outside, Grace Winslow knew that Gregory Winslow was most likely home.
Sure enough, a moment later, Irene Lynch and Gregory Winslow walked out of the house.
Seeing a girl with Grace, Irene Lynch was surprised for a second, then her face broke into a wide smile as she came forward to greet them. "Grace, you’re back! This must be your friend, right? Welcome, welcome! Quick, come inside."
Joanne Chase was so flustered she walked stiffly into the living room. "Unc— Uncle, Auntie."
She stuttered out her greeting, her face beet red.
Grace Winslow couldn’t help but laugh from the side. "Mom, don’t scare her, or she’ll never come over again."
"What are you talking about? What’s your name, dear?" Irene Lynch shot Grace a look before turning back to Joanne Chase with a gentle expression.
"I... my name... is Joanne Chase," Joanne replied, stammering.
"It’s okay, it’s okay, no need to be nervous! Just make yourself at home. Have a seat. I’ll get you some snacks. You must be hungry, right? I’ll go start dinner right away. What do you like to eat? Just tell me, and I’ll make it for you."
"Such a pretty girl. It’s a shame I don’t have a son, or I’d really want you for a daughter-in-law." The more Irene Lynch looked at Joanne Chase, the more she liked her.
It seemed elders always had a soft spot for this kind of obedient, well-behaved girl.
Joanne Chase shot to her feet. "Auntie, please don’t go to any trouble. Anything to eat is fine with me. You don’t have to get me snacks, I don’t need any."
"Nonsense. You’re a guest in our home, and we should treat you like one. How could we do otherwise?" Irene Lynch said disapprovingly, telling Grace Winslow to keep their guest company while she went to get the snacks.
Gregory Winslow could see how nervous Joanne Chase was, so he decided to step out for a stroll, not wanting to make her feel even more tense by staying in the room.
Grace Winslow sat down next to Joanne Chase and poured herself a cup of tea. "Don’t be nervous. My parents are really easygoing."
Joanne Chase was still trying to even out her breathing. She nodded at Grace’s words. "I... I’m not nervous."
"You were walking so stiffly you looked like a toy soldier, and you’re saying you’re not nervous?" Grace Winslow found it amusing.
Joanne Chase’s face instantly turned red.
