Chapter 37: Round Two Ends
Eros’ eyes flickered about in an attempt to notice any changes; there weren’t any. Still, he couldn’t get rid of the feeling that something was wrong. Or perhaps this place had a cap of six clones.
The clones were still chasing after him, and even though they weren’t a problem he dared not slow down. However, the orb was mere meters away so nothing should go wrong.
He was wrong; everything could still go wrong—terribly wrong.
The liquid darkness in the veins began to move once again, but this time they didn’t form clones of Eros.
Instead, they formed creatures of all types, from small, twitching srabbits with hollow eyes to large golems that stood much taller than Eros. Different beasts took form, and he would occasionally see a few humans although they didn’t seem too powerful.
This time, they manifested in front of Eros, stopping his advance and forcing him to halt.
Eros’ mouth stood agape as he could see more than 30 beasts in front of him. However, that wasn’t the breaking point. What really made everything seem hopeless was when he watched the liquid darkness coagulate and form the same dragon that had appeared earlier.
"What. In. The. World?"
Everything seemed to pause for a second, even the clones behind him.
At this point, Eros didn’t know what to do. His hand shivered as he tried to grip his sword steadily. His breathing was uneven.
Even if he wanted to run away, he doubted that would even be possible at this point.
Perhaps he would have had a chance if he were only facing five clones, but with the current situation, it seemed hopeless.
After all, with so many creatures in front of him even an Adept would have a hard time getting through.
He had a faint idea what these creatures were. Most likely what was left of the unlucky beings that had wandered into this godforsaken place, if he were to fall here, he would most likely get turned into one of them—mindless creatures that lived only to collect more souls for the orb.
Eros’ gaze sharpened as a flame began burning in him.
He stretched out his sword and infused it with enough yang nexus. It shone with a golden colour and soon became larger than a great sword.
He also intensified the dragon aura, burning his blood so the technique would grant him more power.
If he was going to go down, he would be sure to take as many as possible with him.
A thick silence fell on the world and all the creatures had their eyes on Eros’. Their gazes were heavy, but the press of death was heavier.
"I have a plan," a tiny voice rang out next to him. But just as he turned to regard her, chaos erupted and all the creatures began running towards him.
Eros began swinging his sword frantically at the weaker creatures at the forefront of the group. He cut them down one after another, but for every one he killed three more appeared. The dragon and the other more powerful creatures hadn’t even joined the fight, they just watched in silence.
Eros was still getting overwhelmed and the only thing keeping him on his feet was pure willpower.
"Behind you."
The warning came timely and Eros pushed himself out of the way of the incoming attack. A heavy blade cleaved the air where his head had been a second before.
The culprit was one of his clones. He cursed silently, wishing death on whoever created this hell.
"Just get close to the orb."
He didn’t have time to answer her before an iron-skinned monkey tried to slash his face with its claws.
He shifted backwards dodging it by mere centimetres, then without pausing he slashed upwards cutting the creature into two.
That, however, hardly put a dent in their entire numbers.
"If you can get close enough, I’ll take it from there." The fairy also grasped the severity of the situation. If Eros ended up dead then she probably wouldn’t get another wielder for the next hundred years.
Eros nodded; if it had been another time he wouldn’t have trusted her. But at this point, he hardly had a choice.
He had killed quite a number of beasts in a very short period of time but there were still six clones and over twenty beasts trying to end his life.
His injuries grew by the second as claws and slashes came down on him from all directions. He staggered backwards after clashing with one of the clones. Eros desperately gasped for air as he tried to stabilise himself.
He wasn’t given a moment of respite as a horned pig slammed into his side sending him back to the ground.
Eros groaned as immense pain reverberated through his entire frame.
’This is too much,’ he thought. ’This is too much. Perhaps I can just...’
His eyelids grew heavy as he lay on the floor. He just wanted to sleep...
"Get up, please don’t die."
Eros’s eyes opened once again as that tiny voice rang in his mind. He could hear her sobs and for some reason, he realised how much he wanted to live. Yes, he wanted to live!
His eyes gained clarity once more, and he pushed himself up immediately. That same instant a sword landed directly where he had been lying.
But Eros didn’t see it because his eyes were somewhere else. His gaze locked on the orb in the center of everything, and he began running towards it.
This time they all tried to attack him, but for some reason Eros could tell where their attacks would hit, allowing him to dodge their strikes. Still, some attacks hit leaving deep and shallow wounds on him.
The bigger monsters had already begun running towards him. The size of some alone could easily overwhelm him. But Eros only had his eyes on the orb.
He slowly got closer and closer, accumulating more and more wounds. But that didn’t matter, none of that mattered because the orb was just a meter away.
However, the creatures didn’t plan on letting him go further, they stopped trying to cut him down and instead began using their bodies to obstruct his path. The small ones tried to grab hold of him while the bigger ones pushed him down.
No matter how much he pushed, he still wasn’t able to get all of them off him.
"No..." he cried out. He was already this close, yet the goal seemed so far.
However just as he began to slowly lose consciousness, the sword flew out of his hand.
At the same time, the dragon had already reached him and with a gaze of pure hatred, it swung its claw at Eros.
Eros’ mind, however, was in a liminal state as he stared at the claw about to hit him.
He couldn’t keep his grasp on reality anymore as his consciousness finally faded. Simultaneously, the sword pierced directly into the orb. The dragon’s claw paused directly in front of Eros’ face.
