Chapter 35: Sword spirit?
"Do not be overwhelmed little one, for you are in the presence of the angel of the glorious Yin and Yang Sect."
The creature in front of him spoke with a smug expression, but Eros hardly cared about its words. He was, however, surprised by the creature itself. It was a small fairy-like being with feathered wings of varying colours.
It had the body of a girl, and its skin was so pristine that it seemed to glow with a luminescence. The wings on her back were similar to those of an angel, and they appeared golden with dark purple stripes across their surface.
The creature itself was hardly bigger than a palm, and it exuded no aura whatsoever.
"Hey, hey, are you listening to me?"
Her words brought back Eros whose eyes had been on her, observing with a deep scrutiny.
"Yeah... I’m still here."
"Good." She pouted.
At this point, Eros began to wonder if he had taken the wrong sword. Cause he had never heard of the sword of duality coming with a tiny girl.
"What are you?" Eros asked in a whisper. His eyes were filled with curiosity at this little creature.
"What?"
"I said what are you?"
The fairy looked at him weirdly. "You really don’t know?"
Eros shook his head.
The fairy placed her palm on her face and let out an exhausted sigh.
"Look, I’m the sword spirit of the sword of Duality. And before– You know what, take me to the sect master."
"Huh?"
She snickered, muttering something about the degrading intelligence of disciples under her breath.
"I can tell you’re from the Yin and Yang Sect from your blood, that’s why I was willing to bind with you. I’ve been sealed for so many years, it only makes sense that I see how developed the sect is now."
Her words made sense, but they just made Eros’ face grow dark.
"I’m sorry but you can’t."
The fairy raised a brow, "Why not?"
"They’re dead." He replied with a matter-of-fact tone.
The fairy seemed to freeze for a moment. She turned towards Eros and spoke, this time her voice was more contained than it had been earlier. "What do you mean by that?"
Eros’ palm shook slightly as he tried not to remember the things he had experienced.
"They’re all dead. The Yin and Yang sect doesn’t exist anymore. It’s gone."
The fairy didn’t say a word after getting hit by the brutal reality, she just stared at him with her little mouth opening and closing, but failing to produce any coherent words.
The silence was thick, almost permeable in the air and it seemed to last way longer than it actually did.
"How did it happen?" She finally managed to get out.
Eros let out a chuckle, an action she hadn’t expected. "Does it matter, I doubt there’s anything you could do about it if you knew."
She was about to retort, but realised he wasn’t exactly lying. After all, she was just a sword spirit and her power was purely dependent on the people she bound with.
"What really matters though," Eros got her attention once more and she gazed at him. "Is finding a way out of this cursed place.
It was only then that the fairy seemed to realise that their environment was quite strange.
"Where are we?" She asked in her usual high-pitched voice that made it hard for one to take her seriously.
"I have no idea. A trial dungeon maybe?"
"It looks more like a tomb." The fairy squinted her eyes as she looked around.
"A tomb?"
"Yeah." She nodded. "I don’t know about now, but back then whenever each of my wielders was about to die they would construct an Inheritance tomb. It usually consists of a trial, and anyone who successfully passes it would inherit their legacy."
"Do you know more about these tombs?"
"Not really, I lose most of my memory whenever I change wielder, so I hardly know anything about it other than what it is."
Eros let out a frustrated sigh as he placed his hand on his forehead and paced around.
"But can you help me—help us get out of this place?"
The fairy seemed to contemplate for a while.
"Maybe, I hardly have an idea what the trial is, though." Still, Eros let out a sigh of relief.
"But, if we end up leaving this place you have to tell me everything that happened to the Yin and Yang Sect,"
"Okay, that won’t be a problem." Eros nodded
"Also," she added, prompting Eros to pause. "Also, you’ll take me there."
"Take you where?"
"To the sect, I want to make sure you aren’t lying."
Seeing her lack of trust Eros couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
"Believe me, you have no idea how much I wish I were lying. But we have more important matters on hand.
"Oh and before I forget, do you have a name?"
The miniature human shook her head. "My name changes every time I get a new wielder."
"So I’m supposed to name you."
She nodded.
Eros thought for a moment but couldn’t come up with anything. "We’ll think of a name when we get out of here," he finally decided.
"So, how do I use the sword?"
The fairy chuckled, "Just try it out, you’ll get the hang of it."
Eros, choosing to believe her, picked up the sword. There was nothing special about it, although one would have to acknowledge how well-crafted it was. But being well-crafted wasn’t going to help Eros kill copies of himself.
He swung it a few times but couldn’t feel anything special.
Just as he was about to complain once more, the high-pitched voice resounded beside him. "You’re supposed to infuse it with Nexus."
The corner of Eros’s mouth twitched as he suddenly felt dumb.
When he finally infused the sword with his mana, though, nothing happened. He was just about to complain when the sword shone with a golden light.
The sword then began growing in size, becoming heavier as he infused Nexus into it. It took very little time for the sword to become a full-fledged great sword. Eros had to stop infusing nexus into the sword or else it would have grown too heavy to even use.
"Now try using yin type Nexus."
Eros did as he was told. Because of his unique bloodline, he could switch the attributes of his nexus from yin to Yang. He normally used Yang type Nexus as his default, and there was hardly a noticeable difference between the two unless you were using a sword like this that reacted differently to the two.
Immediately he switched to yin type, the sword began reducing in size while becoming more flexible and lighter. By the time he was done, it had been transformed into an extremely sharp long sword.
"Wow," Eros couldn’t help but mutter.
"That’s just one of the features, the Sword of Duality can do so much more."
An excitement appeared in Eros’ eyes as he desperately asked, "Like?"
"You’re still too weak to use any of the actually powerful features," she said mid-laughter.
Eros wasn’t disappointed though. He had expected his low cultivation to affect him.
Still, the amount of flexibility the sword brought was definitely enough to make him more powerful. His eyes flickered to the circle in the middle of the hall. Perhaps if he went in now things would end differently.
