Chapter 101: Four Gates Main Buildings
Gradually walking down the eastern main road, Fengyu saw a different view.
Stores popped up left and right, people went into them with full carts and left with empty ones.
Fengyu walked into one of them and saw that they were generally built the same as the Green Plum Store – mostly purchasing items with limited items to sell.
Each store had one or two unique items, a special kind of rice or some beast material, which only they sold.
He also saw the Green Plum Store and saw their unique item – Green Plums. From their description he felt like these plums weren’t fruits but rather pills, though their price was several times higher than pills.
Walking further, he saw many special things, though nothing truly interested him.
Everything was rather basic, things he could’ve ordered through the Green Plum Store even in the village.
That was when he realised – this was the Eastern Main Street.
The shops here focused on purchasing items and only sold general things.
For a bigger purchase he would likely have to check out the Western Main Street, which was linked to the Trading Gate. A gate like that was most likely the true market of the city.
Once he walked over half the distance on the street, he started seeing more casual shops.
Restaurants, tea houses and taverns.
At this time of the day there weren’t many people visiting them, but he could see from their appearance that these shops were aimed at the cultivators of the southern gate.
This was probably why there was no inn in sight. There were very few people here who needed an inn.
Besides these three kinds of shops, there wasn’t much more.
No theatre, no brothel or anything of this kind. Entertainment... was more like a side-enjoyment.
The most people did here was go drink some wine and listen to some storytellers.
Fengyu smiled and shook his head, feeling like this was truly the behaviour of low-end cultivators.
To truly start enjoying the city one likely needed the cultivation of Foundation Building.
Without that you would remain on the level of a worker who didn’t even have enough spare spirit stones to waste...
Thinking of his own debt of 200.000 spirit stones which he had to pay back in 16 years... he suddenly felt that he was worse off than those people.
Slowly he approached the end of the street, where he saw a large complex of courtyards lined up left and right of a large gate.
Just as he looked at the gate, he saw a flying leaf in the air get lower and lower, finally entering through the gate.
Curious, he looked at one of the sparse stalls to his left and asked, "Fellow daoist, could you tell me what that gate is?" He handed a spirit stone while asking.
Seeing the stone, the cultivator took it happily and explained, "This is the Inner City Gate. It’s the residence of the higher cultivators."
"The residence? Then, are there also more things to see?" Fengyu asked, wanting to know further. As far as he knew, most of the time when a city was split into inner and outer, it was likely a case of the inner city having special and exclusive shops or something like that.
"More things?" the cultivator looked confused then shook his head, "I don’t know, but that shouldn’t be the case. Very few cultivators live there, and the rest just occasionally go in and out for a few things.
According to the regulations of the city, every business has to be held in the outer city, so at least there shouldn’t be any important things there."
"Nothing important? Is it really just the residence of higher cultivators?" Fengyu was surprised.
If there was really such a regulation, this meant that even the higher cultivators would mingle with the lower cultivators, which was quite a surprise for him.
Thinking of something, he asked, "What about the City Court? That should be there, right?"
"No, the City Court is in the Northern Gate.
The four gates each have an extremely important building –
In the east is the Outer City Administration Office.
In the north is the City Court.
In the west is the Grand Auction Hall.
In the north is the Great Library."
Fengyu nodded, understanding it quite easily.
The court is directed to the north with most new visitors, likely to show authority.
An auction in the heart of the market makes sense naturally and fits the best.
And the library being directed towards the founding gate seems to suggest the origin and foundation of the whole city.
These four buildings were likely the core of the city, but at the same time, they weren’t the only important buildings. Whether there were other great or grand buildings, he would have to explore in the future.
Until now he hadn’t even fully seen the eastern gate, having only walked along the main street.
He handed another spirit stone to the stall owner before taking his leave, walking to the large buildings ahead.
Many people were walking in the same direction, so when he arrived there and entered it, he wasn’t surprised to see that it was extremely filled.
All receptions had over five people standing in line, so he simply chose one and waited until it was his turn.
"Registration, lease renewal or something else?"
"I would like to register." Fengyu said as he took out his token and letter of recommendation.
The receptionist took both and completed checking them then asked, "Would you like to rent a courtyard, field or enter a peak?"
"Peak?" Fengyu asked confused.
"With this special recommendation, you gain an advantage when renting a field and even have the right to directly enter a peak’s lineage and rent a field on the peak."
Hearing this for the first time, Fengyu was quite shocked.
"What about the advantage I gain when renting a field?"
"You can rent higher security fields with a larger range."
