Chapter 68: Red Dragon vs Silver Vanguard
Kael neared the dragon and didn’t slow down.
The heat alone should have forced him back, but he pushed through it, boots slamming against the cracked stone as flames still licked the ground around him. His grip tightened on his sword as he closed the final distance.
"Crimson Breaker!"
He swung.
The blade carved a heavy arc toward the dragon’s foreleg, the impact ringing out like metal striking stone.
A spark.
Then, resistance.
"...Tch—"
The strike landed, but it didn’t cut deep. The scales held, only a shallow mark left behind.
The dragon moved instantly.
Its head snapped toward him, jaws opening wide.
"Kael!" Liora shouted.
"Barrier—Sanctuary Veil!"
A translucent field formed around him just as the dragon’s claws slammed down. The impact shattered the outer layer, cracks spreading across the barrier like glass.
Kael slid back several steps, boots scraping hard against the ground.
"...That’s tougher than I thought," he muttered.
Above and behind, Selene raised her staff again, mana flaring brighter this time.
"Arcane Volley!"
Multiple bolts of condensed magic shot forward, striking the dragon’s wings and neck in rapid succession.
Each impact burst with light, but the dragon barely flinched.
"...It’s resisting," Selene said, her voice tightening.
Seraphine moved beside her, already drawing again.
"Don’t stop."
She pulled back.
The arrow shimmered with a faint silver glow.
"Piercing Wind—Triple Release!"
She fired.
Three arrows split mid-air, each one adjusting its path before slamming into the same point along the dragon’s shoulder.
This time, the dragon reacted.
A deeper sound.
A growl that carried weight.
"...There," Seraphine said. "Same spot. Focus there."
But the dragon wasn’t passive anymore.
Its wings spread wide, then it beat them hard.
A shockwave of air blasted outward, scattering debris and forcing Selene and Seraphine to brace themselves.
"Careful!" Selene warned.
On the ground, Kael charged again.
"Iron Body—Reinforce!"
A faint glow wrapped around him as he pushed forward, ignoring the heat and pressure.
"Come on!"
He leapt—
Sword raised high.
"Titan Cleave!"
He brought it down with everything he had.
This time, the blade struck the same area Seraphine had hit.
A deeper sound.
A slight crack.
The dragon roared.
Its tail whipped sideways.
Fast.
Too fast.
Kael barely raised his guard before it hit him.
"Kael!" Liora shouted.
The impact sent him flying, crashing through part of a ruined wall before slamming into the ground.
Dust exploded around him.
"...Damn it..." he coughed.
Liora rushed forward immediately.
"Healing Light—Radiant Pulse!"
A warm glow surrounded him, easing the damage, but her hands trembled slightly.
"...You can’t take hits like that repeatedly!"
The dragon lifted slightly again, preparing another attack.
Selene gritted her teeth.
"...It’s not slowing down."
Seraphine didn’t look away.
"...We’re not dealing enough damage."
The gap in power was clear now.
They were strong, but not enough to bring it down quickly.
On the ground, Kael pushed himself back up.
"...Heh..."
He wiped the blood from his lip.
"...Now this is a fight."
But even he knew.
This wasn’t going to be easy.
Seraphine stepped forward, her grip tightening on the bow.
"...Then we push harder," she said.
She drew again, this time slower.
Mana gathered around the arrow, denser than before, the air around it starting to distort.
"Don’t hold back," she added.
Selene nodded, her staff rising beside her.
"...Understood."
Her eyes sharpened.
"Grand Arcane—Burst Sequence!"
The ground beneath her feet cracked slightly as mana surged outward. This time the magic wasn’t a volley.
It was a barrage.
Dozens of condensed projectiles formed in the air around her, each one humming with power before launching forward all at once.
They struck.
Across the dragon’s wings.
Its neck.
Its torso.
Explosions of light rippled one after another, shaking the air.
For a moment, the dragon’s descent halted.
Seraphine released her arrow at the same time.
"Wind Breaker—Penetration Shot!"
The arrow tore through the air, faster than before, carrying a sharp, piercing force as it struck the cracked portion of the scales.
This time, it went in.
Not deep.
But enough.
The dragon roared.
"...It’s working!" Selene said.
But the next second, everything changed.
The dragon’s body twisted mid-air.
Then it flared its wings, and dove again.
Faster than before.
Straight at them.
"Scatter!" Seraphine shouted.
They split apart.
Fire came down.
A massive wave that engulfed the area, turning the ground into a sea of flame.
Selene barely raised a barrier in time.
"Arcane Guard!"
The shield flickered under the heat, cracks forming instantly.
"...It’s stronger!" she gasped.
On the ground, Kael charged again.
Even after everything.
"Don’t stop!" he shouted.
His aura flared brighter than before, energy wrapping around his body.
"Overdrive—Limit Break!"
His muscles tensed.
Veins stood out.
He pushed forward faster than before, closing the distance in a blink.
He jumped, higher and harder.
"Titan Cleave—Second Strike!"
He brought the blade down again on the same damaged spot.
This time, the impact echoed.
A deeper crack.
The scales gave slightly, but again, it was not enough.
The dragon’s head snapped toward him instantly.
Too fast.
"Kael, move!" Liora screamed.
He couldn’t.
A claw came down.
"Sanctuary Veil!"
Liora cast it again, but it shattered on contact.
The claw struck Kael head-on.
A heavy, crushing blow that slammed him into the ground.
The impact sent a shockwave through the street.
Dust exploded outward.
"No," Liora whispered.
The dragon didn’t stop.
It opened its jaws again, right at him.
"Move! MOVE!" Selene shouted.
But Kael wasn’t getting up. His body lay still and blood spread beneath him.
The dragon released its breath.
Fire engulfed the area.
Liora rushed forward without thinking.
"Healing Light—Radiant Burst!"
Her magic flared desperately, trying to reach him through the flames.
Seraphine gritted her teeth.
"...Damn it!"
She fired again, faster now, more aggressive.
Trying to pull the dragon’s attention away.
"Rapid Shot—Wind Pierce!"
Arrows struck its face, its neck—
Anything to make it turn.
And it did.
The dragon shifted its focus.
Away from Kael.
But the damage was done.
Liora dropped to her knees beside him, her hands shaking as she tried to stabilize his condition.
"...Stay with me... stay with me..."
Selene landed beside her, breathing hard.
"...He’s not moving..."
Seraphine stepped back, bow still raised, eyes locked on the dragon.
Her expression hardened.
"...We’re losing ground. The dragon is strong."
Meanwhile, in the air, Marcus watched the battle unfolds before him.
"That dragon is a real deal. Well I have to hold the end of my bargain," he said as he materialized a javelin rocket launcher.
